Introduction to the Course:
a) Catalog Description (2010-2011 Academic Catalog):
This course is a continuation of ECET 36700. Topics include emerging technologies in computer networks
and related hardware, modeling, simulation, and analysis of existing LAN and WAN topologies. The
course emphasizes hardware software integration with respect to computer networks.
b) Prerequisites:
ECET 36700
c) Elective course.
Specific Goals of the Course:
a) Course Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:
1. Troubleshoot common network problems at Layers 1, 2, 3, and 7 using a layered model approach
2. Interpret network diagrams
3. Configure, verify, and troubleshoot VLANs, inter-VLAN routing, VTP, trunking on Cisco switches, and
RSTP operation
4. Manage IOS configuration files
5. Identify the basic parameters to configure a wireless network
6. Describe the impact of applications (Voice Over IP and Video Over IP) on a network
7. Configure, verify, and troubleshoot DHCP and DNS operation on a router
8. Configure and verify a PPP connection between Cisco routers, and Frame Relay on Cisco routers
9. Configure and verify a basic WAN serial connection, a PPP connection between Cisco routers, and
Frame Relay
10. Verify, monitor, and troubleshoot ACLs in a network environment
b) Criteria 3 Student Outcomes:
This course covers items a, b, and c in ABET Criteria 3.
