Microscopic Image of the ER Train Route
The ER Train Stops and Functions
● Ribosomes-
build amino acid chains
which are pushed into Rough ER ● Rough ER- Synthesizes and packages
proteins
● Smooth ER- Makes lipids,
metabolizes carbohydrates, and
detoxifies the cell from drugs and poison

More About the ER Train Stops and their
Functions
● Ribosomes- Stick to the Rough ER like leeches and build amino
acid chains
● Rough ER- A series of flattened sacs that look like sheets
covered with ribosomes. They help it synthesize and package
proteins. When the protein is complete it pinches of a vesicle.
That vesicle moves to the cell membrane or golgi apparatus
● Smooth ER- A network of tubes that lack ribosomes. The
smooth ER makes lipids, metabolizes carbohydrates, and
detoxifies the cell from drugs and poison.
Endoplasmic Reticulum Analogy
The endoplasmic reticulum is like a train route because it
transports the proteins and lipids manufactured in the
different parts of the organelle to other parts in the cell. The
ribosomes, rough ER, and smooth ER act as the train stops
where the product (lipids and proteins) is manufactured. General Function of the ER Train
Route
The endoplasmic reticulum manufactures lipids and proteins.
It then transports them to other parts of the cell. It also
metabolizes carbohydrates and detoxifies the cell from drugs
and poison.
