C.J. (AKA: Communication Journal) – of course
Pencil(s) – mechanical or wooden; doesn’t matter
Eraser(s) – on the end of the pencil or separate
Paper with lines – for homework assignments and taking
notes on the lesson
Textbook – for homework and as a reference - these are lent
to students
Blue pen/blue highlighter – for marking out incorrect
homework solutions
Dry erase marker – dark colors, so I can see it across the
room (to use with our school-provided whiteboards)
Cloth, fabric, or eraser – to erase the whiteboards; otherwise
they use their hands or their clothes, which gets them dirty, or
they use our facial tissues, which is wasteful

In AP Language, we will read several literary works throughout the year. Students are asked to have their own copy of
each text we read in class. This is so they can become adept at annotating and interacting with a text. Several grades
will be tied to annotation done at home, and this cannot be accomplished with a book that has been checked out from
the library or the classroom.
These texts (listed below) will be available for purchase through BASIS Ahwatukee and charged to your family’s SMART
for Charters account. Further details and pricing will be sent home with your students. Financial aid will be available for
students who qualify. It is vital that each student in the class have the same edition of each text thus please don’t
purchase the book through other sources. The works below can vary greatly from edition to edition, or
translation to translation. As we will be discussing these texts in great depth down to tiny details, we must all
be using the same publication so that our details are the same. The required texts for AP Language are:
The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson
Students will choose one of the following texts as their second long work (selections will be made within the first few
weeks of school):
In Cold Blood by Truman Capote
A Room of One's Own by Virginia Woolf
The Emperor of All Maladies by Siddhartha Murkherjee
Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer
The Color of Water by James McBride
Students will need to have the following supplies with them
every day in order to succeed in AP Language:
One 3-ring binder dedicated to AP Language (a 1-2 inch
binder is fine as materials will be regularly archived into a
binder to be kept at home)
One college-ruled 3-subject notebook with removable
pages dedicated to AP Language
Blue or black pens
Red pens
No. 2 pencils
Polymer erasers
Individual pencil sharpener
College-ruled paper (hole-punched, no spiral edges)
In addition to the above, students will need the following
supplies to be kept at home (students will be advised when they
need to bring these items with them to class):
In addition to the long texts, students will read selected speeches, essays, and non-fiction excerpts from Great
Speeches of the Twentieth Century , Lend Me Your Ears , 50 Essays: A Portable Anthology, The Language of
Composition, Everything's an Argument, and The Bedford Reader . These readings will be provided to the students as
handouts. Students are responsible for retaining these copies in their class binders; the teacher is not responsible for
replacing lost or damaged photocopies. As a supplement to the class readings, excerpts from films and other forms of
media will occasionally be included in class. These may include excerpts from TED Talks as well as speeches by such
orators as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and President John F. Kennedy.
One 2- to 3-inch 3-ring binder with 8 tabbed dividers
Three 22x28 inch white poster boards
Flash drive or thumb drive to save writing assignments (or a
Google account to use Google Docs)
Access to email is very helpful, but not required, for students in
AP Language.

The textbook recommended for use in this class will be: College Physics by Serway. I may provide photocopies of
textbook chapters from time to time. Under certain circumstances, I may allow a student(s) to borrow the text for home
use for a day or two. In that case I will need to have the borrower student fill out an information page with the details of
the book and duration of borrowing period. The text can also be purchased online at a cheaper price.
Problem-solving worksheets would be assigned in class. I will provide in-class work sheet each week to the
students. Students can continue to work on the worksheet at home as well. I expect students to take complete and
detailed notes during lectures in their classroom subject notebook. I usually do frequent notebook checks for
the students each week or two.

The news media is a major force in U.S. politics, and students are expected to learn the role of the media in the political
system in shaping public opinion, voters' perceptions, and the image of officials and electoral candidates. Students
should be following along with current events in the nation and the world over the course of the year. At times we
analyze as a class or students will present journalism articles and political cartoons from local and national newspapers
and news magazines for classroom disucssion and connect it to their AP Government curriculum. Students should
regularly watch TV news stations' broadcasts, listen to news radio programs, read a newspaper or other read other
online news sources to be able to participate in the classroom discussions.

In European Literature, we will read several literary works throughout the course. Students are asked to have their own Students will need to have the following supplies with them
copy of each text we read in class. This is so they can become adept at annotating and interacting with a text. Several every day in order to succeed in European Literature:
grades will be tied to annotation done at home, and this cannot be accomplished with a book that has been checked out
from the library or the classroom.
The required texts for European Literature are:
One 3-ring binder dedicated to European Literature (a 1-2
inch binder is fine)
One college-ruled 3-subject notebook with removable
pages dedicated to European Literature
Blue or black pens
No. 2 pencils
Polymer erasers
Individual pencil sharpener
College-ruled paper (hole-punched, no spiral edges)
Inferno by Dante Alighieri
Henry V by William Shakespeare
Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad
A Doll's House by Henrik Ibsen
In addition to the long texts, students will read selected poems and short stories from The Selected Works of Anton
Chekov, The Norton Anthology of Poetry, Poetry 180: A Turning Back to Poetry, the Norton Anthology of English
Literature, the Norton Anthology of American Literature, and selected poems from such poets as Edmund Spenser,
John Donne, Rudyard Kipling, and Chinua Achebe. We will also read selected works of nonfiction, including essays
and critiques by such writers as Chinua Achebe and Mary Wollstonecraft. To supplement our reading, we will watch two
film adaptations of Henry V - one produced in 1944 starring Sir Lawrence Olivier and the other produced in 1989
starring Kenneth Branaugh - as well as the documentary King Leopold's Ghost.
In addition to the above, students will need the following
supplies to be kept at home (students will be advised when they
need to bring these items with them to class):
Three 22x28 inch white poster boards
One pack of 5x8 inch index cards
Flash drive or thumb drive to save writing assignments (or a
Google account to use Google Docs)
Access to email is very helpful, but not required, for students in
European Literature.

Instructional Materials: All novels will be available for purchase through the SMART for Charters system. It is
extremely important for each student in the class to have the same edition of each text, so please do not purchase the
book through other sources. The works below can vary greatly between publications/translations, and in order to avoid
confusion and enhance comprehension, we must all be using the exact same edition. Further details and pricing will be
sent home approximately 1-2 weeks before we begin each piece of literature. Students who apply for financial aid will be
provided a class copy for use. You are highly encouraged to purchase your own copy so you may annotate as you
read—a tactic that provides a resource for class discussions, exams, and writing assignments. If a class copy is
provided to you instead of purchasing one, you will annotate/take notes from your reading on a separate sheet of paper.
Copies of all other instructional and supplemental materials (short stories, poems, and excerpts) will be provided to

In our English class, we will be keeping a Student Interactive
Notebook (SIN) as well as a reading journal. For the SIN, a
spiral notebook works best. For the reading journal, a spiral or
composition notebook works well, too, but students may prefer
to use a blank book or journal. In addition to their SIN, students
should have a way to organize and refer to graded assignments
and tests, as well as handouts. Either a three-ringed binder or
accordian folder will work for this purpose.
Students will need basic school supplies for the Student
Interactive Notebooks, such as scissors, pens, pencils,
highlighters and white liquid glue. Should time permit, students
are allowed to decorate them, so crayons and colored pencils or
pens are welcome, too, though not required.
Required Materials:
Three-ringed binder OR accordian folder
Student's choice should have dedicated sections labeled:
grammar, vocabulary, literature, writing and scholarship
1 Spiral-bound notebook (SIN)
1 notebook or blank book (Reading Journal)
Pencils and/or Pens (black or blue)
Highlighters, two or three colors
Scissors
White liquid glue (Glue sticks do not work well for our
purposes)
Loose leaf paper
Dry erase markers (two or three) and an eraser
Optional Materials:
Crayons
Colored pencils or pens
In-Class Supplemental Materials: Supplemental materials will include, but are not limited to: short stories, essays,
poems, excerpts from other works of literature, historical documents, articles, video clips, musical pieces, artwork, and
any other medium that complements our units of study in order to enhance the learning experience and further
understanding. Examples of possible pieces:

In addition, students must have a 3-ring binder with dividers to
keep all texts/handouts/work organized throughout the year.
This is not required to bring to class; however, it is necessary for
success in the course, and it must be accessible (it can either
be kept in lockers or at home). This will be vital for studying for
exams!
These will be handed out in class as needed. There is no need to purchase these items, as only selections will be used.

political debates.
English Language Honors
Marissa Gurtler
Additionally, the teacher may choose to show TED talks and YouTube videos on selected English topics.
Required Texts
In Honors Language, we will read a variety of texts throughout the year.
The required texts for Honors Language are:
The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglas by Frederick Douglas
Elements of Style by Strunk and White
Sentence-Composing for High School by Don Killgallon & Jenny Killgallon
In addition to these major texts, students will be responsible for reading selections of nonfiction and fiction pieces from a
range of works and authors. These supplemental readings will be provided to the student as a handout. Students are
responsible for retaining these photocopies and will be responsible for replacing any lost or damaged photocopies.
As a supplement to the class readings, excerpts from films and other forms of media will occasionally be included in
class. These may include videos of speeches by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., President John F. Kennedy, TED Talks,
and others.
Required Resources:
one 3-ring binder, 2-3 inches in size (students will be given
many handouts, passages for annotation, and materials; these
binders will be filled by the end of the year)
a college-ruled 3-subject spiral-bound notebook to be kept
inside of the binder (for note-taking and in-class writing)
one set of 5-tab dividers
plenty of college-ruled notebook paper
dry-erase markers
whiteboard eraser (a clean sock or towel works nicely!)
pens (black or black and red) and pencils (#2)
highlighters or colored pencils (for annotating)
individual pencil sharpener
white polymer erasers
plenty of 3x5 notecards (for use as flashcards) in a case or on
a ring

Students will also need their own copies of the texts we will be
reading. Refer to the Instructional Materials for this list.
(Students will be informed in advance as to when they need to
purchase these books and have them in class.)
Type of Instructional Material: On‐line materials and Engineering Lifecycle templates from the Purdue EPICS Curriculum Windows 10 laptops/computers provided by the School. A
computer
is not needed at home, but if there is a computer at
(no cost). See http://http://www.epicsk12.org/
home, it could be used if the student wishes to work on their
project outside of class.
Each team will create an Engineering Notebook organized by
the phases of the EPICS Design Cycle and containing with
deliverables throughout the year, as well as a daily log of related
project work. The Engineering Notebook will be electronic in
format, but will also require a printed copy as many engineering
competitions require a hardcopy engineering notebook. A 3
ring binder with a clear plastic sleeve on the front (to insert a
cover sheet) and tab sections should suffice.
Students need to be ready to start working with all of the
following materials at the beginning of each class. If the
students are either tardy or not ready to work, they will lose
participation points for that day. These can be earned back by
performing exceptionally throughout the rest of the week or
attending student hours. Students are expected to take notes
during class and to study/review them at home. To each French

In 4th Grade Humanities and in READ, we will read several literary works throughout the year. Students are asked to
have their own copy of each text we read in class. This is so they can become adept at annotating and interacting with
a text. Several grades will be tied to annotation done at home, and this cannot be accomplished with a book that has
been checked out from the library or the classroom. I also highly suggest that students try to stay with the pace of the
class instead of going ahead, as it allows us to all tackle the same issues and topics together. If you would like a
suggested reading list for free reading with your student, let me know and I'm happy to offer more options in addition to
the starred texts. Students will be asked to always have a free reading text at school and available for reading during
transition times.
Coming prepared to class is a part of each student's
participation grade. Failure to do so will result in lower
participation scores. If financial assistance is needed or if your
family is experiencing extenuating circumstances, please
contact any of your student's teachers.
These texts (listed below) will be available for purchase through BASIS Ahwatukee and charged to your family’s SMART Supplies:
for Charters account. Further details and pricing will be sent home with your students. Financial aid will be available for
students who qualify. It is vital that each student in the class have the same edition of each text thus please don’t
purchase the book through other sources. The works below can vary greatly from edition to edition, or translation to
translation. As we will be discussing these texts in great depth down to tiny details, we must all be using the same
publication so that our details are the same. The required texts for 4th Grade Humanities are:
Humanities:
Minimum of 40 #2 pencils-NO MECHANICAL PENCILS
PLEASE, (this is for the year; students will need to bring three
pencils, sharpened and ready for use, every day to receive full
participation).
Easy Grammar Grade 4
Minimum of 8 dry erase/whiteboard markers, (students will need
to bring three, full of ink and ready for use, every day to receive
full participation).
Sentence Composing for Elementary School: A Work-text to Build Better Sentences By Don Killgallon
2 single section, spiral-bound wide ruled notebooks with three
holes already punched, (one for notes and one for a reading log)
Code Talker by Joseph Bruchac
2 packages of loose leaf wide ruled paper, (can be placed in

*The following items are needed for my class, but may be
shared with other courses:

1 accordion organizer, (my course will be using three sections)*
Flocabulary Curriculum
2 glue sticks*
Brain Pop Curriculum
1 pair small scissors*
National Geographic Kids: World Atlas
1 pair of clean socks or whiteboard eraser*
Journeys Common Core by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt
1 package of markers or colored pencils*
Various portions of G and PG-rated films
1 access to a dictionary and a thesaurus at home, (digital is
acceptable)*
Arizona State History Series by Amy Headley and Victoria Smith
1 public library card*
*Regarding the Fountain by Kate Klise
1 in-binder three-hole punch*
*Catherine, Called Birdy by Karen Cushman
2 packages of personal/mini tissues for backpack*
*The Quest for the Diamond Sword, Winter Morgan
1 personal hand sanitizer bottle, (may be attached to keychain)*
*Sylvia & Aki by Winifred Conkling
2 highlighters, any color*
*Warriors: Forest of Secrets by Erin Hunter
*These texts may be read during free class reading or earned as for reward reading sessions throughout the year but
will not be covered or assessed with our other texts and are optional.
A note about research: on occasion, I may assign light research to aid in writing projects and assignments. For these
assignments your student may need internet access and access to a public library. While the internet is wonderful for
accessing information, there is a lot of value in also going to the public library. I am happy to provide additional
information on how to get a library card and internet access at the library if you or your child need assistance.

In addition students should have a binder at home to file their
homework and test papers. Students bring their homework
each day in the folder, turn it in, receive their prior day's
homework back, put that in the folder, then file it at night at
home. There is no need for a binder for Math at school. It is
essential that the students bring supplies for grading homework,
white board practice and starting homework every day. Missing
supplies will result in a loss or participation points.

long as it is submitted to me the next day after the student
returns to class if absent or by the end of the class day if not
completed successfully in class.

Post-AP: European Literature
Abhijit Khare
Raechl Kynor
The recommended text for this class is: Conceptual Physics by Paul Hewitt. There will about 15 classroom copies of
this book available for use in class only. Under certain circumstances, I may allow a student(s) to borrow the text for
home use for a day or two. In that case I will need to have the borrower student fill out an information page with the
details of the book and duration of borrowing period. The text can also be purchased online at a cheaper price.
1)
Student whiteboards
I will provide in-class work sheet each week to the students. Students can continue to work on the worksheet at
home as well. I expect students to take complete and detailed notes during lectures in their classroom subject
notebook. I usually do frequent notebook checks for the students each week or two.
2)
Physics lab material (when we do the lab)
In European Literature, we will read several literary works throughout the course. Students are asked to have their own Students will need to have the following supplies with them
copy of each text we read in class. This is so they can become adept at annotating and interacting with a text. Several every day in order to succeed in European Literature:
grades will be tied to annotation done at home, and this cannot be accomplished with a book that has been checked out
from the library or the classroom.
The required texts for European Literature are:
One 3-ring binder dedicated to European Literature (a 1-2
inch binder is fine)
One college-ruled 3-subject notebook with removable
pages dedicated to European Literature
Blue or black pens
No. 2 pencils
Polymer erasers
Individual pencil sharpener
College-ruled paper (hole-punched, no spiral edges)
Inferno by Dante Alighieri
Henry V by William Shakespeare
Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad
A Doll's House by Henrik Ibsen
In addition to the long texts, students will read selected poems and short stories from The Selected Works of Anton
Chekov, The Norton Anthology of Poetry, Poetry 180: A Turning Back to Poetry, the Norton Anthology of English
Literature, the Norton Anthology of American Literature, and selected poems from such poets as Edmund Spenser,
John Donne, Rudyard Kipling, and Chinua Achebe. We will also read selected works of nonfiction, including essays
and critiques by such writers as Chinua Achebe and Mary Wollstonecraft. To supplement our reading, we will watch two
film adaptations of Henry V - one produced in 1944 starring Sir Lawrence Olivier and the other produced in 1989
starring Kenneth Branaugh - as well as the documentary King Leopold's Ghost.
In addition to the above, students will need the following
supplies to be kept at home (students will be advised when they
need to bring these items with them to class):
Three 22x28 inch white poster boards
One pack of 5x8 inch index cards
Flash drive or thumb drive to save writing assignments (or a
Google account to use Google Docs)
Access to email is very helpful, but not required, for students in
European Literature.
Students will also need their own copies of the texts we will be
reading. Refer to the Instructional Materials for this list.
(Students will be informed in advance as to when they need to
purchase these books and have them in class.)
Post-AP: History and Philosophy of Mathematicsof Math
Jonathan Rowland
In an effort to spare students the surprisingly high cost of textbooks for this class ($250+ for each book!), I will be
providing handouts of all reading materials which are to be placed in the student's binder. In addition to this, students
are recommended (but not required) to purchase the following on their own:
Students must bring with them to every class:
1) Dry-erase marker and eraser
Dunham, William. Journey Through Genius . Penguin Books. ISBN: 9780140147391. (approximately $10)
2) Binder with three dividers (for homework, handouts, and
quizzes). NB: Students will have the option to store their binders
in the classroom if there is no homework on a given day.
3) Pencils, Pen, and paper
4) Composition notebook

TEXTBOOKS AND RESOURCES:
There is no primary textbook for this class. This class uses a variety of primary and secondary sources from multiple
authors and publishers to better instruct students. The following is a list of major texts and sources that we will use and
draw from over the course of the year.
World History: Patterns of Interaction
By: Roger B. Beck and Linda Black
Publisher: McDougal Littell
·
This text will be the most utilized secondary source resource. Student will receive copies of selected chapters to
use for homework or as a resource in their active and archive binders. Students are not required to purchase this book.
World History and Geography
By: Jackson J. Spievogel
Publisher: McGraw Hill
·
This text will be used occasionally in class and is not required to purchase.
The Human Record, Sources from Global History, Volumes I and II
By: Alfred J. Andrea and James H. Overfield
·
Various primary sources will be used. It is not required to purchase.
Ways of the World, A Global History with Sources
By: Robert W. Strayer
·
Small excerpts of this text will be used as a resource for students. It is not required to purchase.
Various additional Primary and Secondary sources will be used throughout the course (testimonies, historical narratives,
literary excepts, images, charts, graphs, tables, documentary clips, and relevant videos)
REQUIRED COURSE MATERIALS:
Ø
TWO 3-ring binders to be used EXCLUSIVLY for this class
·
1” hard-cover binder to be used as an ACTIVE binder
·
3” binder to be used as an ARCHIVE binder
o This material is required to be brought to class daily
o This will be primarily stored at home, but I will periodically request student bring this binder in on
specific days to organize materials after major units or tests. While I will not regularly check this
binder and it will not be kept at school, it is imperative that it be stored safely at home with easy
access for the student. In addition to being a large part of their classwork and homework grade,
this will be an invaluable tool for students to do well on Pre-Comp and Comp tests
·
1 set of 5 binder tabs for the active binder
·
1 set of 10 binder tabs (or an additional 2 sets of 5 binder tabs) for the archive binder
·
A continual supply of college ruled loose leaf paper to be kept inside the active binder. This will be used for notes
and classwork assignments.
o Students will need to replenish this supply throughout the course as needed. I recommend
checking your student’s paper needs regularly so that they can actively participate in classroom
·
