Respiration and breathing Task 1 Cut up the statements and put them in the correct order Start: Some oxygen in the lungs diffuses into the blood. Carbon dioxide diffuses from the blood into the air sacs in the lungs. Oxygen diffuses into the body cells. Oxygen is used by cells for respiration to release energy from glucose. Carbon dioxide diffuses from the body cells into the blood. Carbon dioxide is transported back to the lungs. Oxygen is transported in the blood to all parts of the body. Carbon dioxide and water are waste products of respiration. Task 2 1) Describe how our breathing rate changes as we exercise. ............................................................................................. 2) Use the following keywords to help you write a simple explanation of why our breathing rate changes during exercise. ............................................................................................................. ............................................................................................................. ............................................................................................................. ............................................................................................................. ............................................................................................................. ............................................................................................................. ............................................................................................................. ............................................................................................................. oxygen carbon dioxide © www.teachitscience.co.uk 2013 muscles 20180 respiration energy heart Page 1 of 2 Respiration and breathing Answers Task 1 Start: Some oxygen in the lungs diffuses into the blood. Carbon dioxide and water are waste products of respiration. Carbon dioxide diffuses from the body cells into the blood. Carbon dioxide diffuses from the blood into the air sacs in the lungs. Task 2 1) Breathing rate becomes deeper and faster. 2) As physical activity increases muscle cells need more energy so they respire more. To respire more quickly the muscle cells need oxygen and glucose supplied at a faster rate. Carbon dioxide needs to be removed at a faster rate. The heart rate increases to pump blood at a faster rate around the body. The breathing rate also increases to increase the supply of oxygen and remove carbon dioxide at a faster rate. © www.teachitscience.co.uk 2013 20180 Page 2 of 2
