4th Grade Solar System Project Due Date: Thursday, 01-12-12 State Standards: Earth and Space Systems Goal 4.1: Understand scientific theories of origin and subsequent changes in the universe and earth systems. 4. S.4.1.1: Compare and contrast the basic components of our solar system (planets, sun, moon, asteroids, comets, meteors). Project Objectives: The student will be able to produce a model of the solar system and demonstrate what they have learned about our solar system. Project Rubrics: Points Model 4 Model was turned in on time and complete. Planets Model included a creative representation of all nine planets in the correct order. Sun Model included a creative representation of the sun in an accurate relationship to the planets. Asteroid Model included belt, comets, asteroid belt, comets and meteors. and meteors. Students may not buy solar system kits and put them together for their project. The model must be small enough to sit on their desk or be tacked to the wall/hung from the ceiling. Please encourage your student to use everyday items that you may usually throw away or have around the house. This project is not meant to cost you money. It is meant to give students the opportunity to construct a model of our solar system and demonstrate what they have learned in creative ways. It is intentionally open so that students may use their imaginations with minimal restrictions.
