4th Grade Solar System Project
Due Date: Thursday, 01-12-12
State Standards: Earth and Space Systems
Goal 4.1: Understand scientific theories of origin and subsequent changes
in the universe and earth systems.
4. S.4.1.1: Compare and contrast the basic components of our solar system
(planets, sun, moon, asteroids, comets, meteors).
Project Objectives:
The student will be able to produce a model of the solar system and
demonstrate what they have learned about our solar system.

The solar system model must be student created and constructed out of everyday materials. Families may help
students plan, brainstorm ideas and put together their model, but must not do it for them. Students may not buy solar
system kits and put them together for their project. The model must be small enough to sit on their desk or be tacked to
the wall/hung from the ceiling. Please encourage your student to use everyday items that you may usually throw away or
have around the house. This project is not meant to cost you money. It is meant to give students the opportunity to
construct a model of our solar system and demonstrate what they have learned in creative ways. It is intentionally open
so that students may use their imaginations with minimal restrictions. You may visit our Class Web Site for links to sites
that are good sources for ideas, information and inspiration and don’t forget good books!!! Please feel free to contact me
with any questions you may have and have fun!!!
