QUIZ This Is Why Your Brain Is So Amazing Take a look at the incredible job your brain does every day (without you even knowing). QUIZ This Is Why Your Brain Is So Amazing Take a look at the incredible job your brain does every day (without you even knowing). Your brain can juggle more than two conscious tasks at once. Your Answer: False Your brain doesn't really do several tasks at once when you multi-task. It switches very quickly from one task to another. Because switching takes time, multi-tasking isn't a very effective or efficient way to work. What may cause a déjà vu? Your Answer: Being somewhere new that resembles a place you remember Scientists are still puzzled about why people have déjà vu -- the feeling that you've been somewhere or done something before even when you haven't. But new research suggests that déjà vu occurs when people are somewhere new that's similar to a place they've been or do something similar to something they did before. For a moment, they mistakenly think they were there or did it in the past. Previous Continue The bigger your brain is, the smarter you are. True Your Answer: False A bigger brain doesn't always mean bigger thoughts. In fact, human brains were larger back when we were living in caves, but our bodies were also larger then. As we evolved, more of the space in our brains became used for complex processes such as language, thinking, and memory. What surprised scientists about Einstein’s brain? It was missing several key parts His brain cells' nerve fibers were longer than average His brain was no bigger than average Certain lobes of his brain appeared larger than normal Your Answer: Certain lobes of his brain appeared larger than normal A 1999 study of Einstein’s brain, based on photographs taken of it after he died in 1955, showed that the parietal lobes, which are linked to math ability, appear 15% wider than normal. But the size of his brain was a little smaller than average. About how much does your brain weigh? Your Answer: 3 pounds We may be the smartest creatures on the planet, but others have bigger brains. Larger brains are needed partly to control larger muscles. A sperm whale's brain weighs about 17 pounds and an elephant's weighs a little more than 10 pounds. An owl's brain weighs 0.005 pounds and a bullfrog's about one-tenth of that. Meditation has been shown to improve the ability to pay attention and make decisions. True False Your Answer: True When researchers looked at brain scans of Buddhist monks meditating, they found that the parts of the brain that help people concentrate and make decisions became more active. The burst of activity was very strong in young monks learning to meditate. But it was smaller in monks who had meditated more. This could mean the older monks' brains had learned to focus more easily. If you are left handed, the right side of your brain controls the muscles on the left side of your body. True False Your Answer: True The right side of your brain controls movements on the left side of your body whether you're right or left handed. The left side of your brain controls movements on the right side. That's why damage on one side of your brain affects the other side of your body. So if you have a stroke in the left part of your brain, your right arm or leg could be paralyzed. What do most people mainly use the left side of the brain for? Language Spatial abilities Face recognition Music Your Answer: Language The two sides of your brain, called hemispheres, look almost identical. But they handle different tasks. When you form words or do math, you use mostly the left side. Face recognition, spatial abilities, and music are tied to the right side. The more you use your brain, the stronger it stays. Your Answer: True To keep your brain fit, you need to exercise it. Learning new skills or doing mental tasks makes the connections between brain cells stronger. Staying curious can help it stay sharp as you age. Exercise also appears to help us keep brain power. What raises the chances of having a stroke? High blood pressure Exposure to UV radiation Emotional stress All of the above Your Answer: High blood pressure A stroke happens when a blood vessel in your brain breaks or gets blocked. High blood pressure -- along with diabetes and smoking -- can damage blood vessels including those that supply your brain, raising the risk for a stroke. Through chemicals called neurotransmitters By making tiny vibrations Through magnetic attraction How do brain cells signal one another? Your Answer: Through chemicals called neurotransmitters Brain cells, or neurons, are separated by tiny gaps, called synapses. When a signal reaches the end of a nerve fiber, it releases neurotransmitters, which cross the gap to the receiving neuron. Movements, thoughts, memories, sensations, and feelings are all due to signals passed by neurons. What is ‘’grey matter’’? The protective lining around your brain The cell bodies of neurons The myelin sheath Your Answer: The cell bodies of neurons Gray matter includes neuron cell bodies in the thin outer layer of the brain. White matter appears white because it mainly contains nerve fibers coated with a sheath called myelin. The sheath allows neurons to send messages, or nerve impulses, faster. How Much of your energy does your brain use? 5% 10% 25% 75% Your Answer: 25% Your brain is only about 2% of your body weight, but brain cells use twice as much energy as other cells in your body. Brain cells are always active, even when you sleep. Which images register strongest in your brain? Faces Cuddly animals Words Your Answer: Faces Studies suggest that your brain is aware of subliminal, or hidden, messages even when you aren't. Human faces that express emotions, such as smiling or frowning, seem to have the strongest impact. Words are weaker at conveying hidden messages. How MANY brain cells are in your brain? 10 million 2 billion 100 billion 300 billion Your Answer: 100 billion The average adult human brain has about 100 billion cells. Linked by synapses, each brain cell can connect to tens of thousands of other brain cells. It's still a mystery exactly how these connections work together to create all the marvels of our brains. A good night’s sleep allows your brain to store memories. True False Your Answer: True Researchers think that sleep gives the brain time to process and store memories. We seem to save memories of how to do things such as play piano or ride a bike during sleep. People who don’t get enough sleep have trouble concentrating and recalling memories. Brain cells generally live longer than other cells. True False Your Answer: True Brain cells are the longest living cells in the body. Research shows that some parts of the brain may be able to grow new neurons as we age. But most of our brain cells are present from birth to death. The wiring of these cells changes constantly through our lives. Your Score: 100% You correctly answered 17 out of 17 questions. Great job, Einstein. You're a genius when it comes to brain science. 21/02/2016 Brain Foods That Help You Concentrate. Ginseng, Fish, Berries, or Caffeine? Listen to the buzz about foods and dietary supplements, and you'll believe they can do everything from sharpen focus to enhance memory, attention span, and brain function. But do they really work? There's no denying that as we age, our body ages right along with us. The good news is that you can improve your chances of maintaining a healthy brain if you add "smart" foods and drinks to your diet. Caffeine Can Make You More Alert There's no magic bullet to boost IQ or make you smarter -- but certain substances, like caffeine, can energize you and help you concentrate. Found in coffee, chocolate, energy drinks, and some medications, caffeine gives you that unmistakable wake-up buzz, though the effects are shortterm. And more is often less: Overdo it on caffeine and it can make you jittery and uncomfortable. Sugar Can Enhance Alertness Sugar is your brain's preferred fuel source -- not table sugar, but glucose, which your body processes from the sugars and carbs you eat. That's why a glass of something sweet to drink can offer a short-term boost to memory, thinking, and mental ability. Have too much, though, and memory can be impaired -- along with the rest of you. Go easy on the sugar so it can enhance memory without packing on the pounds. Eat Breakfast to Fuel Your Brain Tempted to skip breakfast? Studies have found that eating breakfast may improve short-term memory and attention. Students who eat it tend to perform better than those who don’t. Foods at the top of researchers' brain-fuel list include high-fiber whole grains, dairy, and fruits. Just don't overeat; researchers also found high-calorie breakfasts appear to hinder concentration. Fish Really is Brain Food A protein source linked to a great brain boost is fish -- rich in omega-3 fatty acids that are key for brain health. These healthy fats have amazing brain power: A diet with higher levels of them has been linked to lower dementia and stroke risks and slower mental decline; plus, they may play a vital role in enhancing memory, especially as we get older. For brain and heart health, eat two servings of fish weekly. Add a Daily Dose of Nuts and Chocolate Nuts and seeds are good sources of the antioxidant vitamin E, which has been linked in some studies to less cognitive decline as you age. Dark chocolate also has other powerful antioxidant properties, and it contains natural stimulants like caffeine, which can enhance focus. Enjoy up to an ounce a day of nuts and dark chocolate to get all the benefits you need with a minimum of excess calories, fat, or sugar. Add Avocados and Whole Grains Every organ in the body depends on blood flow, especially the heart and brain. A diet high in whole grains and fruits like avocados can cut the risk of heart disease and lower bad cholesterol. This reduces your risk of plaque buildup and enhances blood flow, offering a simple, tasty way to fire up brain cells. Whole grains, like popcorn and whole wheat, also contribute dietary fiber and vitamin E. Though avocados have fat, it's the good-for-you, monounsaturated fat that helps with healthy blood flow. Blueberries Are Super Nutritious Research in animals shows that blueberries may help protect the brain from the damage caused by free radicals and may reduce the effects of age-related conditions such as Alzheimer's disease or dementia. Studies also show that diets rich in blueberries improved both the learning and muscle function of aging rats, making them mentally equal to much younger rats. Benefits of a Healthy Diet It may sound trite but it's true: If your diet lacks essential nutrients, it can hurt your ability to concentrate. Eating too much or too little can also interfere with your focus. A heavy meal may make you feel tired, while too few calories can result in distracting hunger pangs. Benefit your brain: Strive for a well-balanced diet full of a wide variety of healthy foods. Vitamins, Minerals, and Supplements? Store shelves groan with supplements claiming to boost health. Although many of the reports on the brain-boosting power of supplements like vitamins B, C, E, beta-carotene, and magnesium are promising, a supplement is only useful to people whose diets are lacking in that specific nutrient. Some researchers are cautiously optimistic about ginseng, ginkgo, and vitamin, mineral, and herb combinations and their impact on the brain, but more proof is still needed. Check with your doctor. Get Ready for a Big Day Want to power up your ability to concentrate? Start with a meal of 100% fruit juice, a wholegrain bagel with salmon, and a cup of coffee. In addition to eating a well-balanced meal, experts also offer this advice: Get a good night's sleep. Stay hydrated. Exercise to help sharpen thinking. Meditate to clear thinking and relax. Articles on a better healthy living for girls Alkaline Diet: The Steppingstone To Better Health The state of your health starts with the foods you eat. If your meals contain mostly meat, refined and overly processed foods, and simple carbohydrates, your body may become overly acidic. To be truly healthy, you need meals filled with the fruits and vegetables that promote the proper balance of acidity and alkalinity. Western Dining When you eat the typical Western diet, emphasizing heavy animal proteins and processed foods, you create acidity that adds to your health woes. Even worse, eating these foods regularly can increase the levels of toxins in your body, while causing significant wear and tear on other systems, particularly digestion. This way of eating is sometimes referred to as the Standard American Diet (SAD). According to many well-documented studies, the SAD produces a chronic low-grade, overly acidic state in the body. By understanding the impact your diet has on your overall health in terms of pH (acid/alkaline) balance, it becomes clear that an alkalizing diet can offer numerous benefits for long-term wellness and vitality. The Meaning Of pH You may have heard the term pH and been puzzled about its meaning. pH refers to the “potential of hydrogen.” Hydrogen ions contribute acidity to tissues and organs, such as the contribution of hydrochloric acid to the high acidity of stomach secretions. The scale used to measure pH is a logarithmic scale, which means that there is a tenfold difference between each number — ranging from 1 to 14. The lower numbers (1-6.99) represent the acid (or H+ donating) range and the higher numbers (7.01-14) represent the alkaline (or H+ accepting) range. Neutral is 7.0. Some body systems such as the blood (7.35-7.45) are more strictly regulated in terms of acidity/alkalinity than others. Urine has a broader pH range, from 4.5-8.0, which makes it an ideal body fluid for keeping track of adjustments and changes in pH. Acid/Alkaline Levels In The Body A nourishing diet is one of the single most important factors in health and healing. The body works hard to maintain specific acid/alkaline levels in its various organs, tissues and fluids. The very controlled range of pH balance found within different systems of the body includes: Blood: 7.35-7.45 pH Muscle: 6.1 pH Liver: 6.9 pH Gastric juice: 1.2-3.0 pH Saliva: 6.35-6.85 pH Urine: 4.5-8.0 pH Pancreatic juice: 7.8-8.0 pH Many of our key systems and organs including the kidneys, lungs, bones and others have homeostatic mechanisms in place to respond to pH changes and readjust alkaline/acid levels as needed. A chronically acidic state can tax these homeostatic mechanisms, contributing to a number of chronic degenerative conditions such as gastrointestinal issues, osteoporosis, kidney disease, cardiac and circulatory issues, muscle wasting, and many others. For example, bone is called upon repeatedly to contribute calcium to the blood to help buffer an overly acidic environment. This process demineralizes the skeleton because the alkaline minerals calcium and magnesium are continuously removed from the bone to help reduce acidity. Increased calcium excretion from bone can also increase the risk of kidney stones. Factors That Affect pH Levels The foods you eat are one of the primary influences on the body’s pH. The right modifications toward a more alkaline diet can positively influence pH values within various systems of the body. Most fruits, for example, are acid-forming, with the exception of a few such as lemons and limes. Lemons and limes certainly have acidic properties, but are actually alkalizing once digested, which is why these fruits are so highly recommended during a seasonal cleanse or detoxification program. Highly Alkaline Himalayan salt Grasses Moderately Alkaline Avocado Cayenne pepper Mildly Alkaline Artichokes Asparagus Cucumber Kale Kelp Spinach Parsley Broccoli Sprouts (soy, alfalfa, etc.) Sea vegetables (kelp) Green drinks Sprouts Mildly Acidic Black beans Kidney beans Garbanzo beans Cantaloupe Currents Dates Nectarine Plum Cherry Amaranth Millet Oats Spelt Rice, soy, hemp protein Freshwater wild fish Brazil nuts Pecans Hazelnuts Test Your pH Levels Mustard greens Cabbage Okra Celery Onion Collards Spring Greens Radish Red onion Ginger Endive Garlic Arugula Tomato Butter beans Soy beans Lime Quinoa Lemon White haricot beans Chia seeds Green beans Beetroot Lettuce Moderately Acidic Butter Apple Apricot Banana Blackberry Cranberry Grape Mango Peach Orange Papaya Pineapple Strawberry Brown rice Wheat Wild rice Ocean fish Brussels sprouts Cauliflower Carrot Chives Zucchini Leeks New red potatoes Peas Rhubarb Rutabaga Watercress Buckwheat Spelt Lentils Tofu Almonds Most herbs and spices Olive oil Coconut oil Flax oil Highly Acidic Alcohol OTC and prescription drugs Coffee Tea Cocoa Sugars Sweeteners Dried fruit Beef Chicken Eggs Farmed fish Pork Shellfish Cheese Most dairy (except raw dairy, which can be slightly alkalizing) Mushroom There are various schools of thought on testing the body’s pH. Some clinicians advise testing urine, others advise testing saliva. pH paper or test strips are widely available at your local pharmacy or online, so you can experiment with both body fluids to see for yourself what the correlations are for your system. A fasting urine sample gives the most accurate reading. However, a first-morning urine may be overly acidic due to the retention of urine in the bladder for an extended period of time. Second-morning urine, prior to breakfast, can give a good baseline. It is also important to note that any one reading has limited value, being just one data point. Since you are looking for a pattern, you should check your urine several times throughout the day and record your results over time. Two hours after a meal is a good time to test to see how your dietary intake has impacted your pH. Studies have shown that urine pH can show modifications in as little as two hours after a meal. Your goal is to be in the green or slightly alkaline range, which should be fairly easily accomplished by consuming a diet high in green leafy vegetables (alkalinizing foods) and lower in proteins and carbohydrates (acidifying foods). Alkalinizing The Urine Increases Toxin Excretion An added benefit of alkalinizing has been demonstrated in ongoing studies that show an enhanced detoxification effect with urine alkalization. In the Western medical setting, intravenous sodium bicarbonate (alkaline) is used to treat cases of acute drug poisoning. Other studies have shown that alkaline urine enhances the excretion of a number of pharmaceuticals and other chemicals, and inhibits the reabsorption by the kidney of xenobiotics (hormonemimicking chemicals). It makes sense that adopting a dietary lifestyle of ongoing alkalization can encourage small quantities of toxins to be removed from our bodies on a daily basis. We know that cruciferous vegetables (including broccoli, kale, cauliflower, collards and Brussels sprouts) have powerful compounds that aid the liver in its Phase I and Phase II detoxification processes and alkalinize the urine. Alkalinizing the urine while following a seasonal fall cleanse is a perfect adjunctive combination for safely excreting toxins. One of my favorite recommendations within this approach is to use alemon olive oil drink, which has an alkalizing effect and also stimulates the liver and gall bladder to discharge toxins. Another recommendation is a supplement called PectaSol Chelation Complex, which combines modified citrus pectin and modified alginates (derived from kelp). This safe and gentle formula has been clinically researched and shown to assist the body in eliminating harmful, acid-forming toxins and heavy metals, without removing essential alkalizing minerals such as calcium and magnesium. The Best Way To Alkalinize The safest and most natural way to increase your alkalinity is to balance your diet. Some advocates of alkalinizing tend to make proteins and carbohydrates into the “bad guys.” This is an extreme view that doesn’t acknowledge the importance of these types of foods for normal metabolism, immune system support, muscle repair and building, ongoing detoxification, and energy metabolism. However, the carbohydrate category in the Western diet tends to be highly processed, lacking nutritional value and containing chemical additives. Similarly, the protein category in the Western diet tends to be overused with large portions of commercial animal proteins. An excellent alternative is to consume organic nutrient-dense complex carbohydrates, along with smaller portions of organic and grass-fed animal protein sources and high quality plant protein sources, which are less acidic than their over-processed, commercial counterparts. These substitutions are not problematic in terms of alkalization; however, they do need to be balanced with frequent abundant portions of fresh organic alkalizing foods — mainly vegetables. You can ensure you’re achieving an alkalinizing balance by testing your pH levels regularly. Increase your intake of vegetables and fruits high in alkalinizing minerals, such as potassium, magnesium and calcium. Foods that provide excellent sources of potassium include red potatoes, avocado, Brussels sprouts and many others. Green leafy vegetables have high magnesium content; and broccoli, sea veggies, collards, chard and other greens are rich in calcium. An alkalinizing mineral broth can be easily made by combining potatoes, celery, parsley, green beans, zucchini, beet tops, kale, onions and seaweed in a full pot of water; simmering for an hour or two; and pouring off the liquid for use. This makes a wonderful, mineral-rich liquid for a seasonal cleanse. Other alkalinizing food sources include liquid chlorophyll, green powder supplements which can be added to smoothies, soups or warm water, or the highly alkaline umeboshi plum paste made from a sour plum commonly used in Japanese cuisine. Since gastrointestinal function can become compromised when the body reaches an overly acidic state, I also recommend my all-natural digestive supplement, called Integrative Digestive Formula, which contains a blend of digestive enzymes, herbs and minerals. This formula can help to alleviate digestive discomfort such as heartburn and nausea, while improving overall digestive function and nutrient absorption. By making these relatively simple yet important changes in your diet, you will quickly feel the benefits of increased alkalization like reduced inflammatory symptoms and improved energy. A halo only has to fall a couple of inches to become a noose.” Farmer’s Almanac If there were an organization called Healthaholics Anonymous, it would probably be immensely popular. A growing number of people are becoming more than concerned about their health; they are becoming obsessed with it. These people are not just interested in exploring specific health strategies — they are “into” them. They are “into” macrobiotics, “into” massage or “into” yoga. Such people can become neurotic or needy kneaders and being “into” yogic postures can create special problems, because it may be difficult to get out of them. There is a real difference between concern about health and obsession with it. Some people obsess about nutrition but oversimplify the subject and believe that there are only two types of food: those that cure almost everything and those that cause slow, painful death. Some people obsess over stress management strategies, but spend so much energy managing their lives that they neglect to live them. Some people obsess with vitamins, but turn useful supplements into potentially dangerous substances by taking huge doses of them. And some people obsess with meditation but end up sitting on all of their other needs. The most common obsession in the health area is with food. Anyone who starts to research the various theories about nutrition ultimately discovers that almost any food is thought to be poison according one school of thought or another. Meat is poison to vegetarians, milk products are poisons to vegans, tomatoes and eggplant are poisons to macrobiotics, cooked foods are poisons to the raw foodists, and on and on. Anyone can think of one reason or another that any food may not be good for you, but one can also consider ways that most food provides certain benefits. Meats may have too much fat, but they are also a densely packed with numerous nutrients. Eggs may have cholesterol in them, but they have lecithin in them that helps digest cholesterol and other fats more effectively. Cooked foods may lose certain nutrients, but such heating of food can make some of its nutrients more easily assimilated. Ice cream may have a lot of fat, but it can be an important “mental health food.” Perhaps most dangerous for people obsessed with nutrition is the amount of fear that they ingest with their meals. Fears of pesticides, hormones, fluoridation, chlorination, radiation and heavy metals are ingested with every meal. While the negative effects of these toxic ingredients are very real, one can only wonder if the state of fear experienced by some people is poisoning them more than the foods and drinks that they ingest. Obsession with exercise is also common. Although this obsession may seem more beneficial than harmful, the dark side of exercise fanaticism is evident when exercise dominates a person’s life. When you begin to live for the gym or your 50 miles a week, when your personal relationships begin to suffer because your exercise routine always comes first, when you exercise in spite of injury or start climbing the walls when you can’t work out, you may wake up one morning to discover that the only thing left in your life is exercise. And this is seriously unhealthy. I believe that the purpose of good health and exercise is to enrich your life — not for exercise to become your life. Exercise addiction is particularly problematic when you become obsessed solely with workouts and neglect other valuable ways to build and maintain health. The athlete who eats junk food and the bodybuilder who can’t relax are two stereotypical examples of this obsession. Although there are certainly worse addictions than exercise, any action that limits a person’s freedom diminishes his or her health. One way to detect if you are obsessed with health is if you are passionate about a single health discipline — be it nutrition, exercise, homeopathy, herbs or yoga — but ignore other health strategies. Health is feeling whole; it is a balance of the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual aspects of our being. It is certainly healthy to be concerned about your health, but obsessions and addictions fragment the wholeness of health and ultimately disrupt the quality of your life. As members of Healthaholics Anonymous might some day say, “May God grant me the serenity to accept the health conditions I cannot change, the courage to heal myself of the ones I can and the wisdom to know the difference.” Dana Ullman, M.P.H., is America’s leading spokesperson for homeopathy and is the founder of www.homeopathic.com . He is the author of 10 books, including his bestseller, Everybody’s Guide to Homeopathic Medicines. His most recent book is, The Homeopathic Revolution: Why Famous People and Cultural Heroes Choose Homeopathy (the Foreword to this book was written by Dr. Peter Fisher, the Physician to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II). Dana lives, practices, and writes from Berkeley, California. Nature’s Antibiotics Published: December 30, 2014 | By Better Health Publishing Winter has arrived, and we’re naturally worried about viruses. This is certainly justified, but the immune system does a lot more than take on colds and the flu. It’s designed to eliminate whatever is not supposed to be there: viruses, bacteria, fungus, cancer cells and the like. So it’s a good idea to keep your immunity operating at peak efficiency — this includes keeping botanicals on hand that fight bacterial infections with powerful yet safe antibiotic actions. A few specifics on diet Fruits and vegetables are critical to any effort to boost the immunity. They are rich in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and other necessary compounds to help keep pathogens in check. In particular, choose colorful fruits and veggies, as the same compounds that create these pigments also provide excellent health benefits. On the vegetable side, I particularly recommend cruciferous vegetables like cauliflower, broccoli and kale. They are rich in antioxidants, yes, but they also modulate genes associated with immunity and can help control bad bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract. In addition, sulforaphane, a broccoli derivative, has been shown to fight cancer. While it’s important to eliminate bad bacteria, it’s equally critical to bolster the good varieties. A slew of new studies are showing that beneficial microbes support digestion, metabolism and mental health, as well as strong immunity. Maintaining healthy flora in the gut is immensely important, as that’s a major entryway for dangerous pathogens. There are a number of probiotic foods, such as yogurt, kimchee, sauerkraut and kefir, that can bolster these beneficial bacteria, providing total-body health benefits. Vitamins and minerals Zinc is an important component to many immune cells, making it a critical immune-boosting nutrient. People who are zinc deficient are also at risk for immune issues, and research has shown that supplementing with zinc can reduce the incidence of infection. Vitamins are important for a number of reasons. In lab settings, vitamins A, B, C and D have been found to boost a number of immune cells. While these results haven’t quite translated to people, many vitamins also provide protective antioxidant benefits. One study that I find quite interesting showed that people who ingest fruit and vegetable juices increase their T-cell count and protect their immune cell DNA from damage. Antibiotic botanicals As we all know, the major concerns during winter are cold and flu, which are viral infections that do not respond to antibiotics. However, there is still the issue of co-infections. Sometimes during a cold or flu — or any time your immune system is stressed — an opportunistic bacterium gains a foothold. So it’s a good idea to stock up on natural antibacterial ingredients just in case. These natural agents can support overall immune health in addition to fighting bad bacteria — very different from antibiotic drugs which weaken your system by destroying healthy bacteria as well. Since it can sometimes be hard to tell the difference between a viral infection and a bacterial infection, it’s important to consult your health practitioner if symptoms persist. Here is a brief list of herbs and foods with natural antibiotic and immune boosting properties: Cinnamon Clove Echinacea Garlic Honey Sage Usnea Yarrow Oregano Exercise and mindfulness When we get busy, one of the first casualties is our exercise program. We simply run out of time. This is probably the worst thing we can do. With busy schedules comes stress and exercise is one of the best ways to mitigate it. Stress has a profound impact on the body, causing it to overproduce cortisol and other inflammatory hormones, and weaken immunity Another way to control stress is meditation. Even just taking a few minutes to breathe deeply and let the mind rest can be extremely useful Ultimately, our immune system responds to the basic fundamentals of our lifestyle: nutrition, sleep, exercise, stress levels. There are no magic bullets, but as we incorporate good habits into our daily lives, we provide a basis for strong immunity and excellent health all year round. Detox before Winter Published: December 30, 2014 | By Better Health Publishing People often ask why we need to actively detoxify. Their reasoning is that the body is already handling this process through the extensive activities of the liver, kidneys and other organs of elimination. We shouldn’t need assistance. These queries are on solid ground, theoretically. However, the vast array of chemicals, heavy metals, radioactive particles and toxic compounds in today’s world isn’t something our bodies evolved to handle. We need extra detox support to survive this modern-day chemical onslaught. But there’s more to this approach. Detoxification and cleansing rituals have been central to traditional healing systems for thousands of years – long before pesticides, air pollution and chemically-contaminated drinking water. Ultimately, the most compelling reasons to detoxify revolve around the potential consequences of neglecting this process. Allergies, autoimmune disorders, neurological diseases, dementia, diabetes, cancer and much more have been linked to environmental toxins. Furthermore, detoxifying the body increases vital energy, boosts immunity, reduces chronic inflammation and brings a host of other benefits. When done in the fall, a gentle detox program can improve digestive health, metabolism, energy and immunity in preparation for the cold winter months and of course, cold and flu season. Start with diet It’s not difficult to identify natural detox foods; they’re generally the ones with the richest colors. Raspberries, blueberries, beets, dark leafy greens, and carrots are all rich in antioxidants and polyphenol compounds, powerful health promoting compounds crucial for any comprehensive detox. They’re also high in vitamins, minerals and fiber, which is essential for healthy digestion and elimination. I also recommend fermented foods, such as sauerkraut, kimchee, kefir and others, which boost immunity and aid detoxification. They full of healthy probiotic bacteria, which again are essential for gastrointestinal health, as well as immunity, detoxification and more. Stock up on cruciferous vegetables: kale, cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, arugula and others. In addition to being nutritionally dense, they are also extremely potent detoxifiers. Researchers from Johns Hopkins found that a drink made from broccoli sprouts helped remove benzene and other environmental pollutants from the body. The beauty of detoxifying foods is that there are so many of them, it’s really hard to go wrong. Just make sure they’re unprocessed and as fresh as possible. Here’s a partial list to get you started. Apples are high in fiber and flavonoids, which support liver function, immunity and inflammation response. Apples also provide pectin, which is excellent for digestion. Artichokes help us detoxify by boosting liver, gallbladder and kidney function. Beets are rich in fiber, vitamins, calcium, magnesium and zinc. Like artichokes, they are great for the liver. Beets also help the body produce glutathione, a powerful detoxifier. Flax seeds are high in fiber and omega 3 fatty acids, which support heart health, as well as detoxification. Garlic contains allicin, a compound that helps the body eliminate toxins and also has antibacterial properties. The spice turmeric supports digestion and has been traditionally used to treat liver ailments. Sea vegetables are well known for their ability to remove heavy metals and radioactive isotopes. They are also rich in vitamins and minerals. Detox supplements One of the best detox supplements is modified citrus pectin (MCP), which has a strong affinity for a number of toxins, particularly heavy metals. Pectin is a common ingredient in jams and other foods and is excellent for digestive health, as noted above. However, because its molecules are quite large, pectin isn’t able to absorb through the digestive lining into the circulation. MCP solves that problem by enzymatically breaking up pectin molecules, making them much smaller and more available throughout the body. This bioavailability is particularly important while detoxifying. MCP is known for its ability to chelate heavy metals, including mercury, cadmium and lead. To achieve this, it’s critical that it get into the blood stream. Clinical studies confirm that MCP removes up to 74 percent of heavy metals like lead, mercury and arsenic from the circulation, without affecting essential minerals. In addition to heavy metals, MCP also removes a problematic protein called galectin-3. When overexpressed, galectin-3 causes inflammation and is linked to a variety of conditions, including heart disease and cancer. Another botanical that provides critical detox support is sodium alginate. Derived from brown kelp, alginates are good at removing radioactive isotopes, and were given to victims of the Chernobyl disaster. Alginates also do an excellent job of removing heavy metals, and remain in the digestive tract to grab toxins and prevent them from being reabsorbed into the circulation – a common problem with other detoxification methods. I recommend a detox formula that combines MCP and alginates into one supplement. Pectins and alginates form molecular stacks, which create pockets that trap heavy metals and other toxins. Once they are trapped in this molecular structure, the body can easily remove them. A lot of people shy away from detoxification because they feel it’s going to be difficult. They may think they have to starve themselves or make elaborate recipes, or eat only one type of food for weeks at a time. But the beauty of a comprehensive detox is that you don’t have to do any of those to succeed. In fact, with just a few moderate lifestyle changes – more fruits and vegetables, increased hydration, exercise and targeted supplements – it’s not only easy to detoxify the body and improve overall health, but it can be a celebration of greater energy, vitality and overall health. How Spices Work Like Medicine Published: September 13, 2015 | By Suzy Cohen ’m one of those cooks that combines whatever I find in the fridge or pantry without a plan. I’ll throw spices and foods together like a mad scientist, kind of how I did in Organic Chemistry in 1987 (hoping I wouldn’t blow up the lab). Recently, I went to my first cooking class, “Secrets of Indian Cuisine” at Sur La Table. Focusing was difficult since I was distracted by the incredible aroma of the garlic, onion and seasonings which were simmering in the pot. Our chef taught us how to create the most amazing Chicken Tikka Masala I’ve ever tasted! In between bites and moans, I asked why his tasted so much better than the restaurant version. He said, “The secret is the spice you use.” He did not use the powdered spices you get from a regular grocery store. His were fresh and he turned both the cumin and coriander seeds into powder using a little electric coffee grinder. Our eyes widened as he passed around his freshly ground spice with the same store-bought version. The color was completely different. One whiff and his point was made! I decided it’s worth the extra 5 minutes to use spices his way. Indian spices are some of the healthiest on the planet and can act as an aphrodisiac, antibacterial, immune booster, respiratory aid and digestive tonic. I recommend these: Garam masala- This is not one spice, it’s a blend which differs regionally. It usually contains cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, peppercorns, bay leaf and mace (not the kind of mace you spray in a mugger’s face, this “mace” is a waxy red coating off a nutmeg seed.) Garam masala can help you with digestion and respiratory conditions. Nutmeg- It contains myristicin which inhibits an enzyme in the brain that contributes to memory loss. Eugenol, isolated from cloves contains an antiviral that is so strong it can kill the virus associated with shingles and herpes cold sores. Garam masala is used as a finishing spice, not intended to be heated. Curry- This contains a blend of spices, including turmeric known for it’s anti-cancer benefits and ability to reduce inflammation. Curry blends may cause diarrhea in sensitive people. In case you have ever experienced an Indian food reaction, curry is the ‘laxative.’ Coriander- It’s from the seeds of the cilantro plant but it tastes nothing like cilantro. Lightly toast them to extract more flavor. This spice reduces insulin and blood sugar and one study suggests it binds heavy metals such as lead. Green cardamom seed- During cooking class, I gently popped open the seeds in a mortar and pestle by tapping them, and then simmered both the seeds and outer shells in oil. Cardamom is rich in minerals, especially potassium so it’s medicinal action on the body is to reduce blood pressure and control blood clot formation. Chewing the seeds helps with bad breath. What a difference compared to the store-bought powdered type. This spice is used in chai tea. There’s also a black cardamom seed which has more of a smokey flavor. Cumin seed- This is rich in iron in case you have anemia. Cumin is the seed of a small parsley plant. It helps you secrete bile acids and pancreatic enzymes and that helps you break down your food. It also has anti-diabetic actions like the sulfonylurea medicines. Chewing and eating slowly can also help you break down food more efficiently. Cumin contains pyrazines, which are strong antioxidants. Cumin spice improves the action of enzymes in your liver so that you can detoxify better, and this will also help with constipation. Fenugreek- You can buy the seeds and crush them. They have estrogenic properties so some women use them to control hot flashes, or to induce breast milk production. Older folks can benefit from the cholesterol lowering properties of fenugreek. In a 2011 edition of “International Journal of Experimental Pathology” lab animals fed a diet laced with fenugreek enjoyed reduced cholesterol by 42 percent and fewer gallstones by 75 percent. Fenugreek also reduced oxidation of lipids in the liver by up to 22 percent. Ghee- This type of butter originated in India. It’s butter that has been slowly melted to separate the milk solids from the golden liquid on the surface. It’s simmered slowly until the milk solids start to brown, so the resulting butter has a nutty, caramel-like flavor and aroma. You can make this at home or buy it an Indian specialty grocery store. Basmati rice- It’s a long-grain rice native to India. You can buy this at any grocery store or specialty market. He soaked his grains for a few hours then poured off the water and cooked it like you would regular rice. This makes it easier to digest. Here’s the recipe that I’ve adapted which originally came from Sur La Table. I highly recommend their cooking classes. They’re fun, and inspiring. Tikka Masala sauce 4 tbsp ghee 1 small yellow onions, sliced 2 tea minced garlic 2 tea minced ginger 1/2 cup tomato paste 12 green cardamom pods 1 tea crushed red chile flakes 4 tea ground turmeric 2 tea ground coriander 2 tea ground cumin 1 can (28 ounce) crushed peeled tomatoes 2 cups heavy whipping cream 2 tea garam masala Sea salt to taste 1 tbsp lemon juice (to taste) Directions: Place ghee into a large saucepan over medium heat. When ghee is melted, add the onion and cook until tender about 5 minutes. Add garlic and ginger and cook another minute longer. Stir in the tomato paste, chili flakes, cardamom pods and seeds (which you gently break apart in a mortar and pestle). Cook and stir frequently until the tomato paste darkens in color, about 5 minutes. Add remaining spices until fragrant, about 2 minutes. Add the tomatoes to your sauce and bring everything to a boil while stirring. Then reduce heat to simmer, scraping up the browned bits on the bottom of the pot. Stir in the cream and simmer gently, about 15 more minutes. Taste and adjust seasoning with salt and lemon juice as you wish. This is your sauce. Some of you will just pour this over plain chicken and eat it, but the REAL way to make Chicken Tikka Masala is to use this sauce and pour it over chicken that has been marinated. Here’s the recipe to marinate your chicken. Chicken Marinade You can do this the night before, or even a few hours in advance. Mix together the following to cover your chicken: 1/4 cup plain yogurt 1 tbsp minced real ginger (not powdered) 1 tbsp minced garlic 1/4 tea ground cumin 1/4 tea freshly ground mace 1/4 tea freshly ground nutmeg 1/4 tea ground green cardamom 1/4 tea chile powder 1/4 tea turmeric powder 3 tbsp fresh squeezed lemon juice Add the 6 skinless boneless chicken thighs to marinate Directions: Time to cook your marinated chicken. Preheat your oven to 450 degrees. Position the rack in the center. Arrange your chicken on a cooking sheet, or even better put it on top of a wire rack on the cookie sheet. Arrange it all on a single layer and cook thoroughly until it has begun to brown. This should take about 10 to 15 minutes. To serve: Place cooked rice on the plate and place your chicken on the plate. Cover with Tikka Masala sauce and serve immediately. sign up for our Newsletter About the author About Suzy Cohen Suzy Cohen, America’s Pharmacist has been a licensed pharmacist for 25 years and is a functional medicine practitioner for the last 15. Hello epiphany! I’ve been waiting for you. Most of us had moments of realizations, whether it’s suddenly seeing your significant others without the rose-colored glasses, or the gut wrenching aha moment where you realize you hate your job but it’s all you know how to do. Epiphanies are mental moments where we have instant clarity, which can turn into motivation to change and charge forward. But not all epiphanies are created equally. Some demand a deep inward search, and you’ll be stuck asking the tough questions to see what you are made of. Other times they fly in and out of our life swiftly, silently, almost unseen. Many of my coaching clients first come to me looking for the epiphany — that instant moment when you have it figured out, and all of the emotional pain is wiped away with clarity. It often happens for them. They return with excited emotions, and they say, “I had my aha moment!” It’s great to have an epiphany, but what you do with that new clarity is what matters most. Most of our habits are so ingrained in our life that changing behaviors causes recourse in life. Most epiphanies force us to see situations and ourselves in a new light. The next step is courage. And taking that step to live out your epiphany is when real transformation happens. In my own life I have had some powerful moments. But the ones that have impacted my life the most are the ones I have put into practice. These are eight epiphanies everyone should have. They have certainly changed my life for the better, and maybe they can help you. 1. You aren’t what people say you are. What matters most is what you say and feel about yourself. You get to choose, you can let others define you and tell you who you are or you can show them who you are. Be you. The world needs you as you are. 2. Plan B is often better than Plan A. The most freeing moment in your life is when you let go of what you think is best for you and allow the universe to show you what you really need. Stop holding on to what is no longer working: that job, that relationship, that dream. If it feels like hard work and is causing you more pain than gain, it is time to release it. Instead, follow your heart. 3. You are not the number on the scale. At the end of your life the weight struggles, the food wars, or the obsession with new diets and trying to look a certain way will have no relevance. The only thing that matters is what is in your heart. How you make people feel and how you make YOU feel is more important than how you look. 4. The journey is more important than the goal. Yes reaching goals are important, but the actual process of becoming, growing, learning, and morphing into who we need to become is the real sweet stuff that makes a wonderful life. Enjoy the journey as much as the reward. 5. Being alone doesn’t mean you will be lonely. The fear of being alone strikes the heart and makes many people settle. But when you learn to love your own company, you will see that you are never really lonely. 6. It will never be all done. The to-do lists, the chores, the things we race around to get done, will never be done. It is called life. Situations, chores, to do lists will always unfold. Instead of focusing on the end result, be in the process and celebrate what you have accomplished. 7. Emotional pain shows up to show us what we need to change. Sadness, depression, and heartache are gentle reminders to probe deeper into our life. Look at what is not working and be open to living your life in new ways. You will see that one day it will all make sense. 8. You don’t have to find your purpose, it will find you. The transition period between you were and where you are going can be painful, but on your journey of finding purpose. Recognize that there is purpose in the pain. Each step you take is helping you carve out more of how you really are. Instead of regretting or resisting, try turning inwards and embrace the journey into joy. sign up for our Newsletter About the author About Shannon Kaiser Shannon Kaiser has been labeled a "New Thought leader on the Rise," by Café Truth. It's absolutely essential for health restoration and maintenance." – Danica Collins, Editor of The Underground Health Reporter™ uestion: Which super nutrient has demonstrated the ability to… dramatically support the nutritional levels associated with lower risk from cancer, heart disease and Alzheimer's… relieve discomfort associated with arthritic concerns… maintain normal blood sugar… supercharge your body's normal function in fighting inflammation, harmful bacteria and bad cholesterol … strengthen the body's immune system… repair and even regenerate liver structure and function… promote digestive, neurologicaland joint health… preserve and restore youthfulness… and support your normal ability to prevent the most dreaded diseases known to man? Hint: This nutrient is the most clinically studied plant-derived, health-supporting substance in modern science – and one of the most sought-after, low-cost, natural turmeric supplements that countless people take every day. If you haven't guessed it yet, the answer is… curcumin. Curcumin is the active compound found in turmeric root, the herb which has been highly prized in Ayurvedic medicine for more than 6,000 years – and is known to most of us as the goldcolored Indian spice used to make curry and mustard. It is, hands down, the most widely studied nutritional herb today. More than 6,000 studies document curcumin's potential health benefits. Because of curcumin's remarkable therapeutic properties, best curcumin supplements have become "one of the Top 10 Best-Selling Turmeric Supplements in the US", according to Nutrition Business Journal. But before you rush to buy curcumin from your nearest health food store, read on to find out why most curcumin supplements are a waste of money. Discover the only kind that can be fully absorbed by the body and deliver health-enhancing benefits – and see how you can get 2 free bottles. Federal regulations prohibit any person or company from claiming that any product – or even an herb or natural food item, for that matter – can cure disease (especially cancer). We invite you to do your own research and discover for yourself the studies that show stunning health restoration – and why some health practitioners have even nicknamed curcumin "nutritional chemotherapy." Note: Curcumin does not "treat disease" but rather supports a normal, healthy response to threatening health conditions. For example, curcumin does not "treat" pain the way a drug would – instead, it supports comfort and well-being. Pharmaceutical Company Tried to Patent This Powerful Herb! When curcumin's amazing therapeutic properties were first discovered by Western medicine, an American pharmaceutical company tried to patent turmeric. The attempt caused an outrage among health practitioners and suppliers from India because turmeric has been traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years to heal and treat major diseases. Needless to say, the drug company's attempts to monopolize the market on this herb were thwarted! While drug companies can patent dangerous new drugs, they cannot patent natural foods! BUYER BEWARE: Most Curcumin Supplements Cannot Be Absorbed by the Body hat most people don't know is that the majority of curcumin supplements on the market do not provide the extraordinary therapeutic and health restoration benefits. Here's why: FACT: Curcumin is very poorly absorbed by the body. In fact, most 'standard' curcumin supplements – even those made by reputable manufacturers – are so poorly absorbed that they are not worth taking at all. Even the highest dosage of curcumin will not be beneficial to health unless it is effectively absorbed and utilized by the body. That's why some curcumin supplements include black pepper extract (or piperine, a constituent of black pepper) to make the curcumin more absorbable. But even curcumin supplements with black pepper extract are still inadequately absorbed – and that's why it can take up to 8 weeks for full benefits to be delivered. GOOD NEWS: In late 2014, a revolutionary delivery technology (enhancer) was discovered, which makes best curcumin supplement 500% more bioavailable – compared to curcumin without this patent-pending enhancer. [Bioavailability refers to the degree in which a nutrient, such as curcumin, is absorbed into the body. The higher the bioavailability, the more the curcumin is able to take an active effect.] The graph below shows how curcumin with the enhancer is absorbed into the body 5 times (500%) more than the extract without the enhancer in 60 minutes. ↓ ↓ ↓ ↓ ↓ What does a curcumin supplement with 500% more bioavailability mean to you? It means that your body is essentially getting 5 times the therapeutic and health benefits that other standard curcumin Turmeric supplements provide. Is Curcumin Supplements the Reason for the Low Incidences of Alzheimer's and Cancer in India? A 2006 study estimated that 26 million people throughout the world suffer from Alzheimer's Disease, that by 2050, the numbers will quadruple. Cancer, on the other hand, now afflicts 1 out of 3 people. In contrast, today both rural and urban populations of India, where turmeric (with its active component curcumin) is consumed daily, have the lowest prevalence rates of Alzheimer's in the world. Cancer rates are also significantly lower in India than most Western countries. The Only 100% Certified Organic Best Curcumin Supplement with 500% More Bioavailability onsuming fresh or dried turmeric root daily can help enhance your health – but you would have to consume a staggering amount of turmeric in order to experience curcumin's miraculous therapeutic and health restoration benefits. And because most 'standard' curcumin supplements don't have a high rate of absorption (bioavailability), taking them will not produce results either. As of the time of this writing, there is only one best curcumin supplement on the market that contains the revolutionary patent-pending delivery technology that makes curcumin 500% more bioavailable. This is Curcumin Full Spectrum Formula. Unlike other curcumin supplements, it contains the enhancer that makes the curcumin 5 times more absorbable – and it is also the only supplement that has 100% certified organic curcumin extract (with 95% curcuminoids) and organic full-spectrum turmeric powder that assure you that you're getting maximum health benefits. There are countless curcumin supplements on the market – each claiming to contain potent curcumin extracts. Here are guidelines on choosing the right curcumin product: Do NOT Buy Any Turmeric Supplements Unless It Meets These Criteria: Maximum Strength: For optimum health maintenance and therapeutic results, choose a best curcumin supplement that has at least 700 mg of curcumin supplements. Most of the commercially available turmeric supplements contain only 450 mg to 500 mg. Optimum Bioavailability: Don't settle for a curcumin supplement that has a black pepper (or piperine) delivery mechanism – or no delivery mechanism at all – to make the curcumin more absorbable. Insist on a curcumin supplement with a delivery enhancer that provides at least a 500% increase in bioavailability compared to standard curcumin supplements. [The higher the bioavailability, the more the curcumin is able to take an active effect in your body in significantly less time.] Full-Spectrum Formulation: A curcumin supplement can deliver maximum health benefits only when it's full-spectrum – which means it should not only contain the curcumin extract (with 95% curcuminoids) but also contain the pure, high-quality, whole turmeric root full-spectrum powder. When a curcumin supplement contains the whole turmeric root fullspectrum powder, it provides many of the components of raw turmeric root which are normally removed during the curcumin extraction process. The synergy of the whole turmeric root's natural components further enhances the bioavailability of the curcumin – thereby enabling the body to absorb and utilize it. 100% Certified Organic: When buying a best curcumin supplement, you have to insist that the curcumin extract must be 100% certified organic (by the USDA). Warning: MOST curcumin extracts cannot be called "organic" – even if the turmeric root they were extracted from is organic – because of the non-organic chemicals used in the extraction process. The turmeric root must also be 100% certified organic. Everyone knows that conventionally grown produce (including turmeric) is nutritionally depleted because the soils they're grown in are depleted – and therefore, yield nutrient-poor crops. In addition, pesticides and other chemical additives in non-organic farming of turmeric yields nutritionally compromised produce that may not deliver health benefits – and may even have long-term health risks. Current Good Manufacturing Practices: It's worthwhile to investigate if the best curcumin supplement you plan to buy is manufactured by a cGMP manufacturer. A cGMP manufacturer refers to the Current Good Manufacturing Practice regulations enforced by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Manufacturers must adhere to the cGMP regulations – and raw materials and finished products are tested for purity, safety, strength and quality. More importantly, if a product label (e.g., a curcumin supplement label) lists specific ingredients and claims, strict adherence to the label must necessarily be followed. Caveat Emptor: An estimated 70% of nutritional supplement manufacturers do not comply with good manufacturing practices. Horror stories abound regarding the violations and abuses that these companies commit, which ultimately affect the supplement user. For example: It's not uncommon for a non-compliant manufacturer to have a product label that says "Curcumin Extract (95% Curcuminoids)" – and yet the actual ingredient used in the product contains only 4% actives, and the rest consists of maltodextrin or other food additives that are not listed on the label. No Curcumin Supplements Compare to Curcumin Full Spectrum Formula – Here's why it's your best choice: urcumin Full Spectrum Formula is the ONLY best curcumin turmeric supplement that satisfies the 5 essential criteria listed above. It contains the maximum strength of 700 mg Its bioavailability is 500% higher than other curcumin (95% curcuminoids) without the patentpending delivery technology It has a full-spectrum formula containing not only the curcumin extract (with 95% curcuminoids) but also the whole turmeric root full-spectrum powder which further enhances bioavailability It is made of only 100% certified organic curcumin extract and 100% certified organic turmeric root full-spectrum powder; and It is manufactured by a cGMP manufacturer. When I came across the info on Curcumin, it seemed like the thing to try. After using it for less than a month, I noticed the pain levels had dropped significantly. My husband then tried it for a rotator cuff injury and found the same thing.” Liz B., Aurora, Ontario “After surgery I had digestive problems, pain, inflammation, trouble sleeping. After only 6 weeks, stomach cramps are gone, constipation under control, pain is gone.” Jean T., Canyon, Texas “When I take the Curcumin, my pain is less and I seem to be not as stiff and sore. I have arthritis, fibromyalgia, [and] osteo-arthritis… but taking the Curcumin is hopefully keeping it at bay, and even reversing it… All I know is, I feel a bit healthier when I take the Curcumin, and definitely notice, when, for some reason or other, I don't take it, pain and stiffness become almost unbearable, so I will keep taking it!” Mary-Ann S., Bismarck, North Dakota “I've used this product for 30 days and it has improved my digestive system.” Jim S., Grapevine, Texas “Curcumin has a long history of many health benefits. Being able to take advantage of a full strength and clean version of this exceptional supplement is already making me feel less like a ‘senior’ and helping me live life to the full.” John S., Shepperton, UK “I have tried another curcumin product available at my local health food store but it did not have the same positive effect on my digestive system as Curcumin Full Spectrum Formula.” Debra S., Vancouver, British Columbia “Since [me] and my husband began taking Curcumin FSF we have both noted great improvement in joint and back pain.” Ann P., Cork, Ireland “Am on my second bottle and I can tell you I feel light in body for a 66 year old. Quantum Wellness Botanical Institute, LLC 8484 Wilshire Boulevard, Suite 760 t's been a full year since Kerry Diamond took a job as editor in chief at Yahoo Food. But she's still 100 percent entrepreneur. Not only is she the co-founder and editorial director of the biannual food magazine Cherry Bombe, she is a restaurateur with three popular spots in Brooklyn, New York: Smith Canteen, Wilma Jean, and Nightingale 9. Diamond turned her attention to advice on finding passion during her keynote at Inc.'s 2015 Women's Summit on Thursday in New York City. "I get questions all the time from people," she says. "For the younger ones, usually of college age, it’s 'How do I find a job doing what I love. For those not of college age, it’s often 'How can I switch careers.'" It's exciting, she says, "they want to do something more interesting...more meaningful." To this end, she offered up eight solid and helpful tips for a successful career. Read 'em and be inspired. 1. Make friends. For any would-be entrepreneur, it's key to have a support system at home, naturally. But in your working life, it's downright vital. Make friends with colleagues and even strangers, Diamond suggests, for "you never know which friend of a friend will be your next key to success." It can be hard to put yourself out there--particularly for introverts. "If you're not a people person, become a people person," she says. 2. Make an impression. Again, sorry introverts, but you're not going to get anywhere by being a wallflower. Diamond urges that you "do something to get noticed." She told the story of two of her latest hires--neither of whom actually applied to work at Yahoo. One worked at the New York Post's Page Six and had a food blog on the side. The other was just out of school with a major Instagram following in the food world. You have to ask, what can you do to make an impression? Her suggestions: Tweet at someone you admire. Volunteer for events where you can get in front of people in the world you want to meet. Send snail mail. Say good morning to your boss and good night before you leave. "You'd be amazed how many people don't do this," she says, adding that it can certainly set you apart. 3. Pursue your passion on your own time. With technology being so accessible, Diamond points out that "following your passion on your own terms is easier than ever." As an example, she cited YouTube sensation and Inc. 30 Under 30 honoree Michelle Phan. When Phan was a teenager, she was an aspiring makeup artist and her family needed money. She got rejected from a job working behind the makeup counter at a Dillard's department store. So on her own time, she made makeup videos. Those videos led to her being named global video makeup artist for Lancôme, whose parent company L'Oreal eventually gave Phan her own line. Diamond's take on Phan's trajectory? "Sometimes the first step is just letting the world know you're passionate about something." If you don't have any spare time, like many people claim, Diamond recommends reading 168 Hours: You Have More Time Than You Think by Laura Vanderkam. "It's sobering to see how you use your time," she adds. 4. Just say yes. When she and a friend wanted to start a food magazine, which became Cherry Bombe, she didn't have a business plan, but that didn't stop her. When her boyfriend asked if she'd like to open a restaurant, she said yes. Although she realizes now that that decision probably should have been more considered--"Running a restaurant is probably the hardest business in the world," she says-she has no regrets. "Sometimes naiveté can be your best asset." 5. Make the most of your situation. Diamond rattled off a series of career misses. While you can let rejections stand in your way, she encourages you to look at the silver lining. "Instead of fixating on what I didn't get, I asked for other opportunities," she says. Pitch in as much as possible, and ask for opportunities that go beyond your job description, she says, adding: "You might be surprised what you can get if you ask for it." 6. Don't be a dinosaur. Embrace your strengths. Take the time to show people in the office how to use new technology, for instance. "If I’m old enough to be your mother and I’m the one telling you about Snapchat… well, we have a problem," she says, adding that you have to be your biggest advocate. "I honestly feel like sexism will be less and less a threat in the future. The real problem will be ageism... You are supposed to be the one telling me what is cool, now, and next. I expect that of you." 7. Be persistent (but not annoying). It's OK to be eager; it's OK to demonstrate that you really want something. Naturally, you should try not to be annoying, she advises. "I usually send one email and that's it," she says. "If I don't get a response, I think, OK. I don't let it get to me." She adds that that's not necessarily what you should do. "Don't be afraid to send an email more than once." 8. Support other women. This tip needs no explanation. The truth is transdermal absorption (absorption through the skin into the bloodstream) of chemicals is a very real and serious issue. If you currently use body products with any of the ingredients listed below, you could be exposing yourself to dangerous levels of health-robbing toxins that disrupt hormones, generate inflammation and oxidation, compromise immunity, and fuel a number of chronic illnesses down the road. Some common contaminants can be quite dangerous, an example being 1,4-Dioxane. Others include: Parabens Parabens are a common cosmetics preservative added to eliminate bacteria and fungi. Reducing bacteria levels means the products can stay on the shelf longer. However, parabens are dangerous to more than bacteria, having been linked to increased estrogen levels, which can lead to hormonal disorders and even cancer. Methylparaben and ethylparaben have been linked to allergies, endocrine disruptions and immunotoxicity. Studies have found that methylparaben applied to the skin can react with UVB radiation, leading to premature skin aging and DNA damage. Parabens have been found in breast cancer tumors and have also been shown to mimic estrogen, which can play a role in breast cancer. The estrogen-mimicking may also be a factor in early puberty in girls. Parabens have also been linked to skin irritation, contact dermatitis and rosacea in people with paraben allergies. Quaternium-15 Another ingredient, quaternium-15, is known to release formaldehyde, which is a skin, eye and respiratory irritant. The compound has also been linked to cancer, specifically leukemia. Quaternium-15 is also an allergen and can cause contact dermatitis. Fragrances Most deodorants, shampoos, sunscreens, body care and baby products contain some type of artificial fragrance. Fragrances are complex and can be made up of as many as 4,000 ingredients. Many of the compounds in fragrances are allergenic, while some are toxic and even carcinogenic. People have reported to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration a variety of reactions to fragrances, including headaches, dizziness, rashes, coughing, nausea and skin irritation. Fragrance exposure can impair the central nervous system, causing depression, hyperactivity, irritability and other behavioral issues. Methylisothiazoline In research conducted by the National Institutes of Health, methylisothiazoline (MIT) has been linked neurological damage. The compound can increase the risk of brain defects in unborn children, as well as lead to Alzheimer’s and other neurological disorders. This ingredient is commonly found in Head & Shoulders, Suave, Pantene, Clairol and other well-known shampoos. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) make soaps foamy and are found in nearly every brand of shampoo and body wash. Interestingly, they are also used in car washes. These chemicals have been linked to skin and eye irritation, endocrine disruption, possible genetic mutations and cancer. Glycerol Propylene Glycol Also used in shampoos, glycerol propylene glycol is closely related to car antifreeze. Propylene glycol can cause dermatitis, dry skin, rashes, kidney and liver issues, and cell membrane damage. Various oils and synthetic silicone polymers are also added to shampoos, along with thickeners, such as xanthan gum, and emulsifiers, such as glycol stearate. Colorants Made from coal tar, colorants are known to cause allergic reactions and cause cancer in animals. Thickeners are also used to change a shampoo’s consistency and appearance. For example, some shampoos generate a “pearly” sheen by adding flakes of wax. 1,4-Dioxane Very few personal care products list 1,4-dioxane as an ingredient, even though it has been found in 22 percent of the products in the Skin Deep database from the Environmental Working Group. Ironically, 1,4-dioxane is not listed because it is a contaminant, not an intentional ingredient. The chemical is a byproduct of the ethoxylation process. Ethoxylation is a relatively common chemical process that renders harsh cleaning ingredients gentler. However, regardless of intent, it has been linked to numerous health issues. Issues with dioxane: The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency classifies dioxane as a probable human carcinogen. Under Proposition 65, dioxane is classified in the California as a carcinogen. In the journal Cancer’s 2007 review of mammary carcinogens, dioxane was one of 216 chemicals linked to breast cancer. The chemical 1,4-dioxane is used to produce varnishes, paints, inks and detergents. It can even get into food via packaging materials or pesticide residue. Nitrosamines Cocamide DEA, a foaming agent often added to shampoos, reacts with nitrosating agents to form nitrosodiethanolamine (NDEA), a potent carcinogen, which can penetrate skin. As a result, some manufacturers test their finished products for nitrosamines. Studies have identified nitrosamines in more than half of all body care products. Phenylenediamine Phenylenediamine (PPD) is present in more than two-thirds of chemical hair dyes and is known to be toxic to the immune system, skin, nervous system, respiratory system, liver and kidneys. Rinse And Don’t Repeat The best way to protect yourself is to seek out shampoos and cosmetic products that are low on ingredients with potential harm or, better yet, find products that are completely toxin-free. This may be difficult when shopping at regular supermarkets or salons; however, a search online or visit to your local health food store can help you locate products free of dangerous chemicals. One practical strategy that is not used enough is to add beneficial ingredients to shampoos, such as herbal extracts high in antioxidants that can protect against oxidative and inflammatory damage. In addition, consuming high amounts of protective ingredients in the form of foods and supplements can help prevent damage and detoxify the body of harmful chemicals. Some top ingredients include: ECGC from green tea extract Zinc Selenium Honokiol extract Tocopherols Vitamin C Alpha Lipoic Acid Modified citrus pectin and modified alginates A comprehensive detoxification and antioxidant formula containing dandelion, milk thistle, cilantro, MSM, NAC and other targeted ingredients. It’s a good idea to engage in regular seasonal detoxification practices, and spring is one of the best times of year to support the organs of elimination (liver, gallbladder, kidneys, digestion, skin, lungs) in their job of removing toxins and metabolic waste products. A healthy detox diet, targeted supplements such as those listed above and regular exercise can go a long way toward eliminating pollutants from the body and optimizing your long-term health. Eat 5 Walnuts & Wait 4 Hours: This is What Will Happen To You! ChocolateFoodHealth & LongevityRecipes According to new research, eating a handful of nuts every day is a great way to protect yourself against heart disease. Just four hours after eating nuts or consuming nut oil, doctors have observed a vast improvement in cholesterol levels and blood vessel flexibility. Regular intake is key to harnessing the benefits of the nuts, according to Dr. Penny Kris Etherton, who says: “Only by consuming a handful of walnuts or walnut oil for four days in a week you can significantly reduce the risk of heart disease.” But this study isn’t the earliest documented case of walnuts being believed to be a superfood beneficial to the body. Ancient Romans believed walnuts were a sex enhancer among other things, even going as far as to scatter them on newlywed couples. Walnuts were even used by the ancient British to treat mental illness, attributing its benefit to the brain shape of its kernels. So how can you work more walnuts into your diet? Aside from the obvious – just cracking em and chomping – one of the betters ways to eat walnuts is putting a few nuts in the morning oats, mixing them with fruit in a blender and so on. It also works quite well with certain types of yogurt and in salads. David Wolfe helps break down the awesomeness of walnuts further: Walnuts help stimulate the production of the enzymes trypsin and chymotrypsin which are some of the most powerful digestive enzymes the human body produces. As long as a handful (or less) of walnuts is eaten the body typically overproduces these enzymes which are then absorbed into the bloodstream and help to clean the blood and lymphatic system. Get nutty! How to Detox the Healthy Way Don't make damaging detox mistakes. By Isaac Eliaz, MD November 13, 2015 Photograph by Thinkstock My patients often ask me a lot of questions about detoxification. They want to know why they should detoxify, how they should do it, and whether they should expect an uncomfortable experience. Let's start with the last question. Some people view detoxification as a necessary inconvenience, like going to the dentist. They expect side effects, such as headaches, muscle weakness, insomnia, digestive issues, flu symptoms, or aches and pains. On the other hand, once the detox is finally complete, they usually feel great. Or at least feel better… But is that really how it should go? Do we have to climb a wall of hardship to get to the benefits? That depends on how we approach a cleanse. Americans are generally impatient, eager to get a task done and cross it off the list. But detoxification is a delicate process. These things take time. Keep in mind; we are moving dangerous toxins from where they've been stored—sometimes for years—in delicate organs and tissues. As toxins are pulled from fat and other tissues, they can enter the circulation and travel to other areas throughout the body, often triggering new reactions. This is often called a "detox crisis," and can produce the symptoms I listed above, among others. Fortunately, there are ways to avoid a detox crisis and still reap the benefits of a successful cleanse. We simply need to take a gradual approach—no rushing to get it done in a three-day cleanse. By taking it slowly and gently, we make the process easier on our bodies and commit to a more thorough cleanse—one that can replenish our energy and revitalize our health without bogging us down with discomfort and fatigue. Why Detox One of the most insidious byproducts of modern living is a toxic environment. We are exposed to heavy metals, agricultural chemicals, household cleaners, flame retardants and a variety of other toxins on a daily basis. Over time, these poisons accumulate in our bodies. We don’t notice them, that much, but over time they become a serious problem. Toxins scramble hormones, disrupt critical cell communication, and mutate DNA. They can lead to pain, lethargy, joint issues, allergies, suppressed immunity, overactive immunity, and serious diseases like cancer. One of the main consequences of toxins is that they contribute to chronic inflammation. In my practice, I always try to address inflammation early in the process, as it is linked to so many different conditions. Usually, after getting a thorough patient history and conducting some diagnostic tests, it becomes clear that inflammation is a critical underlying issue. Detoxification is one of the best ways to help control it. Don't Be Aggressive Given all the problems generated by our toxic load, I can understand why people would want to hurry. But I must stress that there's really no reward for doing it that way. Fast detoxes are often less comprehensive, and they can sometimes do more harm than good if toxins are dislodged from fat cells for example, and relocated to critical organs. So avoid any system that embraces sudden radical change. That might include aggressive herbal formulas, major dietary adjustments, even rapid weight loss programs. Basically anything that promises speedy results. We also need to think carefully about supporting our body’s innate detoxification systems. Drastic approaches, such as juice fasts, generally don’t provide enough nutrition to keep us at peak efficiency. Another popular approach is colonics. This is another example of impatience overriding good practice. Colonics are convenient; you can schedule an appointment, get the procedure done and move on with the rest of your day. But they're also superficial, hitting the digestive tract but missing the lungs, joints, brain and other areas where toxins may be lurking. Can colonics be part of a comprehensive cleanse? Absolutely. But they really don’t do the job on their own. Getting Started I recommend detox in two stages: start by clearing toxins from the gastrointestinal tract and circulatory system first, then add in a deeper cleanse of the organs. This reduces the risk of overloading the blood with toxins and precipitating a detox crisis. Start with diet, choosing lean, mostly plant-based, proteins. Sprouted and fermented foods are both easier to digest and nutrient-dense, and they offer natural detox benefits with an abundance of enzymes, and in the case of fermented foods, probiotics. Naturally, all foods should be organic, which will reduce exposure to antibiotics and pesticides. Emphasize lots of green vegetables. These are rich in many nutrients and provide antioxidant support. Spinach, cucumber and other alkaline vegetables are great at helping the body release toxins. Cruciferous vegetables—kale, cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage—are rich in compounds that promote detoxification, as well as balancing hormones. Drink lots of water. Most people are chronically dehydrated to begin with and detoxification can worsen that problem. Don’t let it. The body needs lots of water to flush out toxins. Herbal teas and vegetable broths are also good choices. Helpful Supplements One of my favorite detoxification supplements is modified citrus pectin (MCP). Made from the pith of orange peels, MCP is known for its ability to bind with heavy metals and other toxins in the circulation. In addition, MCP has an affinity for galectin-3, an inflammatory protein that has been implicated in cancer, inflammation, fibrosis, cardiovascular disease and other degenerative conditions. MCP has no side effects and doesn’t reduce essential minerals in the body, so it makes a great detox and natural chelation supplement. Medicinal mushrooms are also quite useful. I recommend reishi, cordyceps, agaricus, umbellatus, coriolus and maitake. Mushrooms have a unique ability to absorb toxins. When choosing a formula, make sure it has a comprehensive blend that is grown organically. Phase II After spending around a few weeks to a month detoxifying the blood stream and gastrointestinal tract, it's time to go for the deeply embedded toxins in the liver, kidneys, gallbladder and other organs. This can take some time—weeks or months—so, once again, patience is counseled. Our main targets are the liver, gallbladder and kidneys. I recommend N-acetylcysteine (NAC), vitamin C, methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) and alpha lipoic acid, as well as dandelion leaf and root, milk thistle seed, garlic, burdock, fenugreek, Oregon grape root, astragalus and ginseng to help remove deeply stored toxins. These and other detoxifying nutrients botanicals have affinities for specific tissues and organ systems, and can help to regenerate the body's natural detox mechanisms, boost energy levels, and provide critical antioxidant support to protect against the free radicals produced by toxic body burden. When it comes to detoxification, popular culture has adopted a "let's get this over with" strategy. In addition to causing discomfort, this approach doesn't do the job, and it kind of misses the point. Detoxification is a celebration of our bodies and should be approached as a joyful experience. Yes, we have to take it slow, but we don’t have to be uncomfortable for months. Slow and steady means toxins don’t accumulate in the blood stream to cause a detox crisis, but it also means we take the time to adopt healthy diets and lifestyle practices that can be sustained over time. As a result, we can have an enjoyable, long-term cleanse that is completely integrated into our daily lives. And since we’re feeling great the whole time, there’s simply no need to rush it.
