Monthly Meeting Minutes
2 March 2016

3. Anthony Fuller-Book Report-The Hidden Brain by Shankar Vedantam
-The book discusses different considerations that support how our biases come about in
varied situations i.e. in politics, in crisis and when dealing with individual vs large group
tragedies.
-The group offered suggestions on the following books for additional reading:
Beyond the White Picket Fence by Shari Yantes
Thinking Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman
Racism without Racists by Eduardo Bonilla-Silva
-The discussion also acknowledged that often time we want to get right to the “do.” We
are eager to do something to move the needle forward. Dr. Railey noted that the “do”
can often be as simple as just doing something different i.e. listening to a different news
source (CNN vs one of the big 3 networks), reading a book on bias, listening to a pod cast
on the topic, etc. Dr. Haglund also raised the question is cultural competence really
attainable, should we really be talking about cultural humility instead?
4. Working Groups Breakouts and Reports
1. Recruitment & Hiring Practices – Although they’ve been challenged
by convening together, their goal is to gather resources to inform search
committees, paying particular attention to the different needs that a clinical
search may have from a basic science search. Recognizing there won’t be a “one
size fits all” solution, they intend to triage the information and bring forth that
which is most beneficial to both groups.
2. Culture & Climate – Assessing & Advancing Inclusion
Currently reviewing DES and identifying other surveys that may already be in
circulation. Dr. O’Brien suggests some benchmarking efforts to compare Duke to
our peer institutions. Dr. Martinez-Bianchi notes that once the door is opened,
we need to be prepared for the potential fall out that may come as a result. The
stories and emotions they bring may be “raw” and hard to hear. Ms. Cullins
pointed out that we need to be aware of and avoid survey fatigue. The goal is to
make sure we actually do something with the data and not just collect it for the
sake of the exercise. Future doctor Zamaka suggests putting the after action plan
on the table in the beginning so participants know up front why the data is
needed and how they can expect it data to be used. If we don’t, many may opt
out of completing the survey at all.
3. Building Bridges: Staff & Faculty Relations & InterProfessionalism – The group will work to tackle the gap between faculty
and staff first, recognizing that the best to bring people together is around a
specific task. They will ask the Inclusion Council for ideas of what those tasks
might be, acknowledging the tasks will vary across departments. They are also
asking council faculty for help with identifying meaningful ways to engage faculty
in general to participate in bridge building efforts.
4. Communication Strategies - wiki.duke.edu
Please log on to our wiki site to review and share feedback. Please also see
attached note from the group with other important information and instructions.
5. Benchmarking & Data Mining Diversity Strategic Plans &
Best Practices – Dr. Martinez-Bianchi presented data that showed how
deficient most departments are with Black and Hispanic faculty. While some
have a few, others have none at all. Part of the challenge now is to determine
how to share the data and with whom, as well as confirming accuracy with
department chairs. Professor Malek noted the importance of having access to
department strategic plans.
5. AAMC DES Survey Introduction
1. Our task: Over the next few weeks, please look at the
questions and make 2-3 suggestions on questions we
should include.
6. Next Steps & Closure
Reminder…Read, Reflect & Report: If you selected a book at the December
meeting, please send Jeanine the title (or take a picture of it and send it). We will
allocate a short portion of time at each meeting to learn from one another. Any
volunteers for April meeting?
