CHA Policy Statement for Parents of Children Suspected of
Having Attention Deficit Disorder
1. The doctors of CHA recognize the significant disability that can result
when a child has symptoms suggesting ADD. The physicians in our
office have the understanding and experience to provide medical
management for this disorder.
2. ADD can be a complex diagnosis and is often associated with other
conditions such as learning disabilities and psychological conditions
such as anxiety and depression.
3. There is a consensus in the medical community that this diagnosis
should be made only after a thorough educational and psychological
evaluation is performed. This can be accomplished by your school
district or independent clinics that are skilled at evaluating school
children. A single teacher or parent cannot make the diagnosis. We
have provided several local clinics and independent psychologists that
are available to perform a complete evaluation of your child.
4. If you are concerned about the possibility of ADD, we recommend that
you seek a formal Individual Education Plan (IEP) through your school
district or schedule a professional evaluation at one of the clinics that
we have listed in our resource list. We realize that an educational
evaluation can be both time-consuming and costly. However, we are
convinced that your investment in fully understanding the best
educational plan for your student will be time and money well spent on
his or her future success.
5. Once the diagnosis has been established our physicians will conduct a
consult with you to review the findings and discuss whether medical
management is appropriate, and how this condition is treated and
followed.
