Blowing things up?
What do you think of when you hear
people talk about chemistry?

Most of the things you think of you’ve
probably seen on TV or in movies.
But the one true thing about chemistry
<Frizzle to image>
<Image: http://pixabay.com/en/lab-research- that you already know, is that it deals
with chemicals and how they interact.

In some ways, your body is like one big
chemistry experiment.

n_D3.jpg
It is constantly releasing chemicals
called hormones to control how
different parts of your body function, or
even how you grow and develop.
<Fade to image>
<Image: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki
/File:Illu_endocrine_system.jpg
The system that deals with all of the
chemical interactions in your body is
called the endocrine system.
<Slide in image from right>
<Image: http://pixabay.com/en/diabetesblood-sugar-diabetic-528678/>
Do you know anyone with diabetes?
This is a disease of the endocrine
system.
<Slide in image from left>
<Image: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki
/File:Pancreas_and_nearby_organs.jpg
The pancreas doesn’t produce enough
of the hormone insulin on its own,
<Dissolve to image>
<Image: http://pixabay.com/en/nursediabetes-diabetic-test-a1c-527615/>
so the diabetic has to supplement their
body with more insulin on a daily basis.

The endocrine system is made up of all
the glands in your body, including the
pancreas,
<Frizzle to image>

as well as all of the hormones that are
produced by those glands.

There are over 20 different hormones
that are secreted into your body at any
given time.

Each of the hormones regulates the
functions of different organs in your
body.

The main hormone-producing glands in
the endocrine system are the

the thyroid gland,
the parathyroid glands,
the adrenal glands,
the pancreas,
the gonads
They all work together to keep your
body regulated and in control.

Just like a crazy, mad scientist, your
body takes all of these chemicals and
decides how you need them.

And even though everyone secretes the
same hormones, not everyone gets
equal amounts.

<Image: http://pixabay.com/en/humphreybogart-lauren-bacall-619157/>
Sometimes males and females receive
different types of the same hormone.

Most of these glands are the same in
both men and women, but the gonads
have specific male and female glands.
In the male there are the testes
and in the female there are the ovaries.

The hormones that are secreted can
also be different for males and females.
For example, males secrete
testosterone while females secrete
estrogen.
These hormones help with the
development of the sex organs and
development of your bodies.

them to do that.

Do you know anyone that can eat
anything they want and never gain
weight?
Or do you know someone that no
matter how hard they try to sleep at
night, they just can’t?
Unfortunately there are many diseases
that can be found in the endocrine
system.

If any of the hormones are off balance,
there can be negative effects.
Remember that friend that can’t gain
weight? They most likely suffer from
hyperthyroidism.
<Slide in image from left>
<Image: http://pixabay.com/en/bodybuilderThis means that the thyroid gland is

It keeps your friend’s metabolism
pumping overtime.
But there is medication that can help
when prescribed by a doctor.
Did you ever see the commercials on TV
for depression medicine?

Depression is brought about by
malfunctioning hormones.
And since hormones are chemicals,
depression can usually be treated with
some type of medicine.
However just like most diseases, not
everyone shows symptoms the same
way.
<Slide in image from right>
<Image: http://pixabay.com/en/doctor-painvaccination-shot-arm-673578/>
So what works for one person may not
work for another person.
<Slide in image from left>
<Image: http://pixabay.com/en/boredfemale-girl-people-school-16811/>
And as for that person that can’t sleep?
<Dissolve to image>
<Image: http://pixabay.com/en/stressedfemale-woman-competition-646457/>
They could be really stressed out about
something.
<Frizzle to image>
<Image: http://pixabay.com/en/cry-zoomeffect-stress-angry-62326/>
Stress has a very negative effect on your
body.
<Slide in image from right>
<Image: http://pixabay.com/en/stressrelaxation-relax-word-391657/>
That is one of the main reasons you
should never let things build up.
<Fade to image>
<Image: http://pixabay.com/en/old-womanhuman-person-invalid-83952/>
It just isn’t healthy and your whole body
can be affected.

The endocrine system is one of the
most important systems in your body.
<Slide in image to left>
<Image: http://pixabay.com/en/children-girl- It tells your organs how to function and
tells your body how to grow.

<Dissolve to image>

Without it you wouldn’t develop
normally.
<Slide in image to right>
<Image: http://pixabay.com/en/old-people-sDiseases like diabetes and Alzheimer’s

can be very devastating.

<Image: http://pixabay.com/en/vegetablespaprika-573958/>
<Dissolve to image>
<Image: http://pixabay.com/en/meditationyoga-woman-girl-sand-609235/>
So you must always try to maintain a
healthy endocrine system by eating
properly,
Exercising, and visiting your doctor
regularly.
<Fade to image>
<Image: http://pixabay.com/en/water-fightchildren-water-play-442257/>
This will help ensure your body grows
and develops the way it should!

And just like a chemistry experiment,
the success of your health depends on
the appropriate care and consideration
that you take.
