Course Title: POLITICAL AND ECONOMIC STRUCTURE Course Code: PSCI105 Credit Units: 03 L T P/S SW/F W 2 1 - - TOTAL CREDIT UNITS 03 Course Objectives: To develop basic understanding of economic concepts and Institutions in Political Science. To provide a broad understanding of political concepts, government institutions and constitution in Political Science Pre-requisites: +2 from any stream Student Learning Outcomes: To apply the knowledge of Political and Economic structure. And to analyze their relevance in the present world. Course Contents/Syllabus: Weightage (%) 25% Module I: Introduction Descriptors/Topics Political economy: meaning and significance Economic systems: capitalism, socialism and mixed economy Political ideologies: communism, socialism and fascism Module II Trends in Economy in India Descriptors/Topics Trends in economy in India: the context of reforms – liberalization, privatization and globalization External assistance in India: assistance from foreign countries, assistance from international institutions 25% Module III : Economic Development and Planning in India 25% Descriptors/Topics Concept of economic development: meaning, determinants of economic development in India (GDP, GNP). Economic planning: meaning, objectives of India planning, thrust areas of five year plans. Module IV Democracy as a Concept 25% Descriptors/Topics Concept of democracy: meaning, types, features, merits and demerits, Role and functions of political parties, pressure groups and public opinion, Concept of welfare state Pedagogy for Course Delivery: The signature pedagogy of political science is essentially, a combination of large lecture and smaller group sessions. Political sciences’ signature pedagogy has remained relatively static.
