Abraham Lincoln
Lincoln was the 16th President of the
United States, serving from 1861 until
his assassination in 1865.
Lincoln was born in Kentucky in 1809
from a family of farmers.
When he was 22 he settled in New
Salem
He married his wife Mary Todd
Lincoln in 1837, and move his family
to Springfield

In this year he had his first
experience as a lawyer,
and in 1841 he won his first
court case, representing a
black woman. This his the
first case when a black
people was absolved in a
court.
•
In 1846 he was elected in the house of representatives. After that, he
became a very good lawyer and also in 1854 he became a member of
Republican Party, formed for fight the slavery.
In 1858 he wanted to became senator but his attempt was unsuccessful
and two year later, in 1860 finally Republican Party nominated him for the
Presidential election.
1861-1865
•
Lincoln won the election with also the votes of the northern area of
United States. In the southern area he had no votes.

After his election, seven states,
Alabama, Carolina, Mississippi,
Florida, Georgia, Texas and
Louisiana formed the Confederate
States of America. When the United
states refused to surrender Fort
Sumter, the confederate attacked
the fort and the civil war beginning.
In this period the president rebuild
the union whit blood and create a
Confederacy.

Lincoln was not a general but often
he spending days in the war
department, and with his plans he
often won the clashes.
Proclamation of Emancipation
•
With the Proclamation of Emancipation, on
January 1, 1863, Lincoln ordered the freedom
of all slaves in those states still in rebellion
during the civil war.
•
In a first time only a little part of slaves were
immediately freed, but as the Union army
advanced the slaves were effectively freed.
The proclamation also did not free slaves in
the slave states that had remained loyal to
the federal government of the US.

The proclamation sponsored the Lincoln's
constitutional amendment to free all slaves
and the Thirteenth Amendment making
slavery illegal everywhere.
"My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not
either to save or to destroy slavery. If i could save the Union without
freeing any slave i would do it, and if i could save it by freeing some
and leaving others alone i would also do that. What i do about slavery,
and the colored race, i do because i believe it helps to save the
Union; And what i forbear, i forbear because i do not believe it would
help to save Union.I have here stated my purpose according to my
view of official duty; And i intend no modification of my oft-expressed
personal wish that all man everywhere could be free."

Assassination
•
Lincoln was reelected president
in 1864 for the Second term.
•
On April 14th, eight months after
the 13th amendment Lincoln
were assassinated at Ford's
theatre whit a shotgun.
•
His assassin, John Wilkes Booth,
a Confederate spy from Maryland
died from shots fired during his
capture on April 26.
