TEST REVIEW – 2nd SIX WEEKS

COMPLETE THE CONTENT FRAME BELOW FOR THE FUNCTIONS & ORGANS OF EACH SYSTEM:
SYSTEM
FUNCTION
Chemicals produced in glands that cause
ENDOCRINE
NERVOUS
changes in other parts of the body.
Sends messages to and from the brain to
all parts of the body.
MAJOR ORGANS/PARTS
- Glands
- Hormones
- Brain
- Spinal Cord
- Nerves
REPRODUCTIVE
To insure the continuation of the
species.
- Testes (produce sperm)
- Ovaries (store eggs)
- Mouth
Breaks down food into smaller
DIGESTIVE
EXCRETORY
- Esophagus
molecules that can be absorbed by the
- Stomach
body.
- Small Intestine
Rids the body of wastes.
- Large Intestine
* Urinary System:
- Kidneys
- Bladder
DEFINE THE FOLLOWING TERMS:
1. hormones – chemical produced in glands that cause changes in other parts of the body.
2. glands – The tissues of the endocrine system that produce hormones
3. nerves - cells of the nervous system that send and receive messages to and from the brain to all other
parts of the body.
4. brain - the major organ of the nervous system that controls all body functions
5. fertilization - the joining of sperm and offspring to produce a new offspring
6. egg - the cell produced by a female that joins with a sperm to produce new offspring
7. sperm - the cell produced by a male that joins with an egg to produce a new offspring
8. physical digestion - mechanically breaking large pieces of food into small pieces
and it occurs in the mouth (teeth) & stomach (muscular contractions)
9. chemical digestion - chemical reactions break down large molecules in our food into small ones
and it occurs in the mouth (saliva) & stomach (hydrochloric acid) & small intestine (enzymes)
10. excretory - rids the body of wastes
FILL IN THE BLANKS:
DIGESTIVE SYSTEM:
The first place in which physical digestion takes place is in the MOUTH. This happens
because of the TEETH. Saliva causes CHEMICAL digestion by breaking down large
carbohydrate molecules into smaller, GLUCOSE molecules. Food travels from the mouth
to the stomach through the ESOPHAGUS. The stomach continues both
CHEMICAL and MECHANICAL digestion. Once in the small intestine,
NUTRIENTS are removed from the food mixture. These are transported to all body parts
by the CIRCULATORY system. When the food mixture moves to the large intestine,
WATER molecules are removed, making the feces more solid.
Food contains stored CHEMICAL energy. When we eat and digest food, our bodies
transform chemical energy into MECHANICAL energy & THERMAL energy.
EXCRETORY SYSTEM:
The primary function of the urinary system is RID THE BODY OF EXCESS SALTS, WATER,
AND UREA. These organs, the KIDNEYS, are responsible for filtering WASTES out of the
blood. The kidneys also control the amount of WATER in the blood stream, by
determining how much to add to the urine.
REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM:
The joining of a sperm and an egg is called FERTILIZATION. The SPERM comes from the
male and the egg comes from the FEMALE. The purpose of the reproductive system is
TO INSURE THE CONTINUATION OF THE SPECIES.
NERVOUS SYSTEM:
The main organ of the nervous system is the BRAIN. NERVES send messages from all parts
of the body to and from the brain. These messages are sent using ELECTRICAL impulses.
ENDOCRINE SYSTEM:
This system is made of GLANDS which are tissues that produce CHEMICALS.
Hormones are CHEMICALS that are produced in one part of the body that causes
CHANGES in other parts of the body.
STIMULUS AND RESPONSE:
A STIMULUS IS . . .
A RESPONSE IS . . .
SOMETHING THAT CAUSES AN
THE REACTION OF A BODY OR BODY
ORGANISM TO RESPOND OR REACT
PART BECAUSE OF A STIMULUS
Describe the phenomenon of “Fight or Flight”, what causes it and how the body responds.
WHEN FACED WITH A DANGEROUS, SCARY, OR LIFE-THREATENING SITUATION, A PERSON OR
ANIMAL MUST EITHER FIGHT THE SCARY THING OR TRY TO RUN AWAY FROM IT.

List 3 examples of an EXTERNAL STIMULI and how the body responds:

Outside in the heat—your body sweats
-

A large dog starts to chase you—you might run away.
-

You step out of a movie theater into the sunshine—your eyes squint.
-
List 3 examples of an INTERNAL STIMULI and how the body responds:

Your ankle is sprained - your ankle hurts

Strep bacteria are in your throat - your throat is very sore and you run fever.

Your pituitary gland releases a hormone - your body gets taller
