Cellular Respiration Part 1
WHY? To convert the__chemical energy__ in __nutrients_ to energy stored in _ATP_.
ATP can then _release_ the energy for cellular processes.
WHERE? In the _cytoplasm_ and the ___mitochondria__
WHAT? Any food (_organic_) molecule can be __broken down__ as a source of energy for _ATP_.
STAGES OF CELLULAR TRANSPORT
GLYCOLYSIS (STAGE 1)

a series of__reactions__ using __enzymes__, that takes place in the _cytoplasm_ of the cell

a __glucose molecule__ is broken down into __pyruvic acid__ and __ 2ATP_
AEROBIC RESPIRATION (STAGE 2)
 with O2

if __oxygen__ is present __aerobic respiration___ will follow __glycolysis___

occurs in the ___mitochondria__
Step One: ___Citric Acid___Cycle
( __Krebs__ Cycle)

_Pyruvic Acid_ (formed during __glycolysis__) travels to the__mitochondria__

pyruvic acid is transformed
• Summary:
_carbon dioxide (CO2)_, __water (H2O)__, and __energy_ (_ATP_)
Step Two: __Electron__ __Transport__ __Chain__
IMPORTANT:

Most of the _ATP_ is formed during this step!
_Hydrogen (H)_ combines with __Oxygen (O)__
to form __Water_(_H2O_)

Each reaction produces a small amount of _energy_
but by the end up to _36 ATP_ are produced
EQUATION:
ANAEROBIC RESPIRATION  No O2
• If __oxygen_ is available, anaerobic respiration will follow __glycolysis__
• A common anaerobic process is __fermentation__
Fermentation
• Fermentation is __NOT__ an efficient process, results in ___far fewer ATP___ molecules than aerobic respiration
1) Lactic Acid Fermentation – occurs when __oxygen is not available__
Example: In __muscle__ tissue during exercise (muscles may be __depleted__ of _O2_)
• Lactic acid fermentation replaces __aerobic respiration___
• so the cell can have a continuous source of __energy__ even in the absence of__oxygen__
• this is only a __temporary__ shift because cells need __O2__ for __sustained activity__
Summary:
2) Alcoholic Fermentation - occurs in _yeasts_ and some _bacteria_
• This ONLY __source of energy production__ for these organisms
