Cultural Landscapes of the World We have divided the chart into 7 regions. Then we selected 5 different cultural traits, per the CED, and assigned two to each region. Your job is to utilize your background knowledge of these regions, your textbook, or other online sources and find an image (preferably a photo) that displays these traits in real locations. In the image box include the location. Then write an explanation as to WHY that cultural trait is present WHERE it is. Some have been done for you as examples. Quetzalcoatl’s is often depicted as a feathered serpent and was a significant deity for the Aztecs. The nest found in Mexico shows the beauty of modern architecture and what we can depict as “Quetzalcoatl” today. It holds regular liturgies and if you’re lucky, you might see the pope. POST-MODERN ARCHITECTURE The museum was built by acclaimed postmodernist architect, Frank Gehry, in the Basque region of Spain. It serves as a contemporary art museum and is known around the world for its unique use of materials and random curves that play with light. The purpose of the museum was to revitalize the deindustrialized port area and bring in tourists and therefore income. EUROPE & RUSSIA Guggenheim museum in Bilbao, Spain SACRED SITES This structure itself was built over a thousand years ago. This palace contains over 1000 rooms, 10000 shrines, and 200000 statues. Potala Palace is one of the main reasons visitors even come to Tibet. SOUTHWEST ASIA & NORTH AFRICA Potala Palace in Tibet TOPONYMS Mount fuji is a sacred place of Japan. It represents the peaceful, cultural, and spiritual identity of Japan. More than 200,000 people annually climb to the peak of this mountain. Mount fuji in Japan FOOD OR ALCOHOL PREFERENCE Pad Thai is important to Thailand for many reasons. This dish was created during a period of ultra nationalism in Thailand in the wake of the 1932 revolution. The government believe that Pad Thai, and new cultural policies would strengthen Thailand. Today, Pad Thai remains as one of the main staple foods of Thailand. SOUTH ASIA Pad Thai found in Thailand SACRED SITES Borobudur is a ninth century Buddhist Mahayana monument in Central Java, Indonesia. This is the most visited spot in the whole of Indonesia and shows the cultural importance of it. Along with all of this, it also shows a symbol of religion since there is a big stature of Buddha in the middle. Borobudur found in Indonesia. FOOD OR ALCOHOL PREFERENCE Peking duck was one of the first foods ever found in the country of China. It represents a symbol of good luck and wealth. Peking duck can be found eaten all the way back in the Ming Dynasty. Peking Duck found in China EAST AND SOUTHEAST ASIA TRADITIONAL ARCHITECTURE This house is a staple for east Asian countries and will probably pop up in your mind when you think of a house in Asia. The house typically doesn’t have a door and tends not to have air conditioning also. Namibia actually has 9 official languages, including Afrikaans from neighboring South Africa, but many white German descendants still live there and speak German daily. Many of these German enclaves have been created as tourist towns on the coast. And there is an added bonus: in the background is a traditional German Christian church with it’s Gothic-like spire. TRADITIONAL ARCHITECTURE These structures are well suited to hot climates because of the thick walls providing an insulation from the heat. These house are present in various ethnic groups.
