Organising an Outing By Ron Warford First edition 1999 1 2 3 further from homewith a long journey back at the end. Another way is to find 4 5 6 7 CHAPTER THREE Will it be alright on the day? Outings can be spoiled if • you get a lockout, probably caused by a misunderstanding • the time allowed between towers is wrong and you arrive late • you attempt to ring bells that are beyond your capabilities • a stay is broken at any of the places visited • you don't have enough rest breaks • your ringers disappear from the tower after a quick grab • you all get too tired • your journey home is too long. Lockouts If you are aware of these problems you can plan ahead to avoid them. Usually the reason you are not met (i.e. a lockout) is that your first letter was received perhaps some months before you wish to visit. It is a simple thing to send out a reminder to tower correspondents about a couple of weeks before your visit. By doing this you confirm your visit, which serves as a reminder to the local company who can make the appropriate arrangements to meet you. Sending a reminder is a MUST and a specimen letter is shown at Appendix 3. Late arrival To avoid being late at your chosen towers always ensure that you leave enough travelling time between towers. Always err on the side of safety and allow more time than you think you need. If in doubt, arrange some slack time into the plan after you have taken all other things into account. See Appendix 1. The bells Do not take your ringers to big 12s if they can only just handle little 6s. Beware also of the miniature rings which are becoming more and more available. Never let a new learner ring without first having a minder to ensure he/she can handle the bell well enough.
