Will it be alright on the day?
Outings can be spoiled if
• you get a lockout, probably caused by a misunderstanding
• the time allowed between towers is wrong and you arrive late
• you attempt to ring bells that are beyond your capabilities
• a stay is broken at any of the places visited
• you don't have enough rest breaks
• your ringers disappear from the tower after a quick grab
• you all get too tired
• your journey home is too long.
Lockouts
If you are aware of these problems you can plan ahead to avoid them.
Usually the reason you are not met (i.e. a lockout) is that your first letter was
received perhaps some months before you wish to visit. It is a simple thing to
send out a reminder to tower correspondents about a couple of weeks before
your visit. By doing this you confirm your visit, which serves as a reminder to
the local company who can make the appropriate arrangements to meet you.
Sending a reminder is a MUST and a specimen letter is shown at Appendix 3.
Late arrival
To avoid being late at your chosen towers always ensure that you leave
enough travelling time between towers. Always err on the side of safety
and allow more time than you think you need. If in doubt, arrange some slack
time into the plan after you have taken all other things into account. See
Appendix 1.
The bells
Do not take your ringers to big 12s if they can only just handle little 6s.
Beware also of the miniature rings which are becoming more and more
available. Never let a new learner ring without first having a minder to ensure
he/she can handle the bell well enough. You will not be very popular if one of
