Lab- Body Cavities
2
Viscera vs Visceral
• Viscera- noun- the organs in the thoracic and
abdominal pelvic cavities. (Part of the
viscera, the large intestine is responsible for
water absorption and hydrating the body.)
• Visceral-adverb- of or relating to the viscera.
(Example: She is experiencing visceral pain.)
3
Parietal and Visceral
• Parietal: Adjective
" meaning "belonging
to the wall“ of a body
cavity.
• Visceral refers to the
abdominal organs.
• The picture points out
the two pleura
(covering) of a lung.
• Serous fluid fills the
gap. Why?
4
Anatomical Terminology
Anatomical Position – standing erect, facing forward,
upper limbs at the sides, palms facing forward
Terms of Relative Position
• Superior versus Inferior (trunk and head of body)
• Anterior (ventral) versus Posterior (dorsal)
• Medial (closer to midline) versus Lateral (closer to side)
• Bilateral (paired structures) (one on each side)
•Ipsilateral (same side) versus Contralateral (opposite side)
•Proximal versus Distal (arms and legs)
•Superficial versus Deep
5
Body Sections
•Frontal (or coronal) - cuts the body
into front and back
•Sagittal -cuts the body into right and
left
•Midsagittal- in the middle of the
body
•Parasagittal- Can be right or left
of center
•Transverse (or horizontal)- cut the
body into top and bottom.
6
Sectional Planes of
Organs
as appears in
anatomical position
a. Sagittal
b. Transverse
c. Frontal or
Coronal
7
Cylindrical Organ or Body Parts
Sections
a. Cross Section
b. Oblique
c. Longitudinal
8
Abdominal Subdivisions
• Most important idea is to
know which is the right and
which is the left side of the
body on the diagram
compared to on the body.
