Refusal Method Notes
We can all resist peer pressure but not everyone wants to. Saying no can sometimes be hard, but you might be surprised how
easy it gets with practice. If you know you are going to be some place where you might need to say no, plan your response in
advance. The following are options you can use:
Be Direct
Say “No, thanks.” Sometimes it’s just that easy.
Repeat Yourself
Be firm in your position and continue to repeat your response, “No thanks.”
State Why
Give a reason why - try saying, “No thanks. I have to be up early tomorrow” (or I have a game tomorrow or I have to be home
early or I got caught the last time).
Turn the Tables
If the person won’t let up try turning the tables and ask, “Why do you care what I do?” Be confident in your response.
State the Truth
People don’t like being accused of peer pressuring others, so try stating the obvious: “Wow, peer pressure much?”
Walk Away
It is always an option to not respond and just walk away.
Change the Subject
Try suggesting something better to do with your time, “No thanks. Do you want to _______”.
Be Proactive
Avoid situations where you know it is likely you will be peer pressured or leave before you ever get to that point.
Accept the Person, Reject the Behavior
If the person is giving you a hard time, try telling the person, “I respect your choice to ________, respect my choice not to”.
Assignment: There are many times in life where we need to be able to say NO in an assertive way.
Below are three scenarios in which you will respond to using a Refusal Method. You must use a
DIFFERENT refusal method for each scenario. To receive FULL credit, you must follow the directions
for each scenario.
1. Your best friend is pressuring you to drink alcohol and get drunk at a party after the game Friday
night. Write a LETTER and respond to the situation. You must include the refusal method you use,
the reasons you are saying NO and the outcome for the situation.
i would say no and do everything in my way from preventing this because being at a party with

a bunch of teenagers is so bad so many bad things can happen like drinking and driving. and
another thing that u should do it you shouldn’t cause u might get alcohol poisoning and it
would be very bad it and whoever through this party could get in a alot of trouble.

2. Your parents are out of town and trust you to stay at home by yourself. Your boyfriend/or girlfriend
comes over and notices that you Dad’s sport’s car is in the garage. He/She finds the keys to your dad’s
car and wants to go for a joyride. What do you say to your boyfriend/girlfriend? Include the refusal
method that use in this situation along with the reasons you are saying NO and the outcome.
i would say no because i would get in so much trouble if i ever did

especially if that person didnt have there licence and they crash it
would be a disaster i would say no and if they keep on id make up
something that the car is messed up and not working

3. A cute guy/girl that you’ve had a crush on since middle school is starting to Snapchat you. They ask
you if you would send a nude picture of yourself. What do you say to this guy or girl? Include the refusal
method that use in this situation along with the reasons you are saying NO and the outcome.
i would say no because that is weird to do and i would tell a adult or

someone i trust to help me in that situation and also would never do
it cause what if them got out everyone would see them and you
would have a bad reputation and it could effect your future with a
college or job or anything u want to do and they look back on things
something like that could follow you forever if it ever got out
