Photosynthesis:
6 CO2 + 6 H2O + sunlight
(reactants)
C6H12O6 + 6 O2
(products)
In this reaction carbon dioxide, water, and light energy (sunlight) are used to make food (glucose) to be
stored for use by cells to use to perform cellular respiration.
Two Phases

Light Reactions
takes place in the thylakoid membrane
converts light energy to chemical energy
inputs = water and sunlight
outputs = ATP and NADPH – to be used
in the Calvin cycle
splits water molecule for hydrogen ions

oxygen is a waste product

light dependent




Calvin Cycle
takes place in the stroma
converts CO2 to C6H12O6
inputs = CO2, ATP, NADPH

outputs = C6H12O6 (glucose)


light independent
called a cycle because the required
components are continuously regenerated
Electron Carriers = NADPH
Cellular Respiration:
C6H12O6 + 6 O2
6 CO2 + 6 H2O + energy (ATP)
In this reaction energy from the breakdown of food (glucose) is stored in ATP.
