1. How much do you think the NFL knew and when did they know it?
I think that the NFL already knew about the dangers of concussions long before Dr.
Omalu’s discovery of CTE, but were hiding the information they had found out from
the actual study results from the public out of fear.

2. How much responsibility for damage stemming from head trauma should rest on the
NFL players, who knew they were putting their bodies at risk? How much should the
NFL be held responsible for?
The players do hold some responsibility for putting their bodies at risk, but the NFL
hold most of the responsibility for not warning the players of the actual risks involved
in playing the sport and for leaving players in the dark about all the possible
consequences they may face.
3. Did the NFL shape public opinion about violence in football?
Yes, the NFL did shape public opinion about violence in football. The violence in the
sport is portrayed as bravery, strength, and honor, not as endangering lives.

4. Explain how the NFL shaped public opinion about concussions over the past two
decades.
The NFL shaped public opinion about concussions by making sure that any findings
about the harmful effects of concussions were hidden or dismissed from the public
eye. Through tactics like threatening doctors/researchers and holding staged press
conferences, the NFL was able to not only hide information but to ensure that
anything that was released could be manipulated to their advantage.

5. Should the NFL have done something differently with respect to how they approached
concussions and CTE? If so, what should they have done and when should they have
done it?
Yes, the NFL should have acted differently with respect to their approach to
concussions and CTE. In the first place, they should have released any and all
information as soon as they had found out the risks and true damage caused by
concussions and head injuries. However, even if they did not do this, they should have

at least come right out and admitted to their wrongs when the research about CTE was
released. Either way, they should have acted in the best interests of players all over
America by being open and honest and by enforcing different rules regarding
concussions and the way the game is played to reduce the chances of head trauma.
6. Imagine you are a parent of a child who wants to play football, how would you make
your decision whether to let them play or not?
As a parent of a child who wants to play football, I would make my decision by
thoroughly researching the risks, talking to the coaches about their protocol
regarding injuries, and watching practices to make sure that my child remained safe.

7. What happens to the brain when a concussion happens? What are the short term and
long term side effects?
When a concussion happens, the brain is pushed against the inside of the skull,
which could cause it to bruise. The short term side effects include headache, a
temporary loss of consciousness, dizziness, fatigue, and nausea and vomiting. Long
term side effects include trouble concentrating, memory loss, personality changes,
sleep disturbances, and depression and other psychological issues.
8. Explain how subsequent concussions affect the brain. Secondary concussions…
Subsequent concussions have a cumulative effect on the brain, and can lead to brain
swelling, permanent brain damage, long-term disabilities, and death.

9. Imagine you are a lawyer for the NFL. How would you defend the NFL’s treatment of
concussions in their players? What evidence could you use to prove that you had no
knowledge that concussions cause CTE?
If I were a lawyer for the NFL, I would probably defend the NFL’s treatment of
concussions by denying that the NFL knew anything about the long-term effects. The
evidence I would use would be the “results” from the studies done by the NFL.

10. Imagine you are a lawyer for the players and players’ wives. What case can you build
against the NFL? Outline your offense against the NFL lawyers.
As a lawyer for the players, I would use the evidence from Dr. Omalu’s research and
testimonies from Dr. Omalu, the family members of players who had committed
suicide, and current players themselves who have suffered from concussions. I would
bring up the NFL’s claim that they were conducting thorough research and question

how they could have possibly not known about CTE with all this testing.
11. Imagine you are a football player and your team has made it to the state finals. During
the practice before the game you sustain a concussion. Would you lie about it so that
you could play? Why or why not?
I would understand why a player might lie to stay in the game, but personally I would
not. I know that if I were to play, that would endanger my health and possibly prevent
me from playing in the future, which is more important than one game.

12. What did you think of Dr. Omalu? Was he an ethical doctor or just trying to get into
the spotlight?
Dr. Omalu was definitely an ethical doctor, not just trying to get into the spotlight. He
genuinely cared about his patients and the health and well-being of others, which
showed through the fact that he did not give up when he was threatened and when the
going got tough.
13. What does the sports community do about concussions on the professional,
collegiate, high school, and pop warner football level? What about for sports other
than football?
Nowadays, concussions are treated very seriously, with each of these levels having
their own respective concussion protocols. For example, the NFL has neurotrauma
consultants at every game to ensure that if someone is injured, they are taken care of
and assessed right away. Likewise, in other sports, there are specific safety
precautions taken to protect players and to ensure their health is taken care of.

14. How do concussions affect children differently than adults?
Concussions affect children more than adults because the brains of children are still
developing, so any trauma or damage can have a large impact on the growth of the
brain.

15. Explain how our school deals with concussions. What is the current concussion
protocol here at Christopher? (ask your friends that have had concussions, the Athletic
Director, Ms. Berggren, Ms. Little) What is impact testing for?
Christopher deals with concussions by using impact testing to ensure that all students
who play sports not only have healthy brains but to also serve as a baseline for if the
student ever does get a concussion. The impact test can be used to ensure that the
