Heat Notes #2
Date ___________________
Conduction Lab
Introduction: Have you ever experienced the feeling of touching the handle of a hot frying pan
or felt the cold chill of an icicle? In both examples, heat is being transferred from one object to
another.
Procedure:
1. Assemble the equipment as illustrated in the diagram below.
2. Fill one insulted cup with cold water and the other with boiling water. Quickly replace
the lid assembly.
3. When the thermometer in the “hot” cup reaches its highest point, record this temperature
under “time 0” in your data table. At exactly the same time, your partner should read and
record the temperature of the “cold” cup.
4. Continue taking temperature readings for both
cups at one minute intervals for a total of 14
minutes. Record your data in the table.

Conclusion:
1. During the investigation, what happened to the temperature of the water in the “HOT”
container? _____________________________________________________________________

2. During the investigation, what happened to the temperature of the water in the “COLD”
container? _____________________________________________________________________

3. In which direction did the heat flow between the two containers? (Do not use left or right)

4. What do you guess will eventually happen to the temperature in both cups if you left it out
for days? ______________________________________________________________________
