In above section, the tensile force in the section is “F”. there are two columns of bolts. If interpret “r” as
force transmitted by bolt, then one bolt carry “0.5-F” force, the “r” value will be 0.5.
However, if someone argues that in the paragraph of AWWA Code, it says:
r = force transmitted by bolt or bolts at the section considered, divided by the tensile force in the
member at that section.
Then the force transmitted by bolts (2 bolts) in the section is “F”, therefore r =1.0.
Which interpretation is correct? is this paragraph about “r” in AWWA Code poorly worded? Should it be
revised to
“r = force transmitted by bolt at the section considered, divided by the tensile force in the member at
that section.” ? (i.e. delete the words “or bolts”).
