Lesson 4

MUSCLE
 Injuries
to muscle may be
 STRAINS
 PARTIAL TEARS
 COMPLETE TEARS
 HAEMATOMA FORMATION Intra/Inter
 GRADED MINOR – MAJOR
 Often a result of poor warm-up techniques,
force imbalance and/or loss of
coordination.
STRAIN
 Micro
tears within some fibres of muscle
 Bleeding minimal
 Pain and Spasm localised
 Muscle function normal
 Endurance reduced
PARTIAL TEARS
A
Larger number of fibres torn over a
greater area.
 Muscle facia partially torn and more than
one muscle may be involved
 Injury occurs over a greater area
 Torn fascia releases the blood to form an
intermuscular haematoma
 Immediate pain and tenderness.
COMPLETE TEARS
 All
muscle fibres torn and two ends of the
muscle contract away
 Severe pain, swelling and bleeding.
 A snapping sound may be heard
 Complete loss of function
 Video
 Video
HAEMATOMA
Direct impact injuries will result in muscle rupture and bleeding.
Bleeding can occur -





Intramuscular
Within the muscle
Blood is trapped
within the muscle
sheath
Build –up of pressure
Decrease in strength
and stretch = long
recovery period





Intermuscular
Between muscles
Blood can escape into
surrounding tissue
Less pressure in area
Injury recovers much
more quickly
STUDENT TASK 1
FIBROSITIS
CRAMP
DOMS
CONTUSIONS
TASK 1
Excessive training
or changes in
schedules.
Painful involuntary
Muscle
Contraction
Local Painful
Spasm often in
trapezius
Bruising of muscle
tissue
TREATMENT
R
ICE
 48-72 hrs
 Avoid
vigorous movements, massage and
HEAT as this my cause complications.
 Why?
 Look at task 1 and does all the above
apply? Discuss
