WhatistheYoungPersons’SubstanceUseSurvey? TheAmyWinehouseFoundationYoungPersons’SubstanceUseSurveyisanonlinequestionnaire fundedbyTheBigLotteryaspartoftheResilienceProgramme.Wehopetofindoutaboutthetypes ofalcoholanddrugsthatyoungpeople,aged11to18years,areusingacrossEngland. Youngpeoplewillbeaskedtoanswerquestionsonthefollowing: • • • • • Patternsofsubstanceuse Attitudestowardssubstanceuse Schoollife Activitiesoutsideschool Potentialrisk/protectivefactors Focusgroups Inaddition,weareaimingtoconductaseriesoffocusgroupswithyoungpeople,parentsand teachers,thepurposeofwhichwillbetodiscussthesurveystructure,contentandadministration. Theresultsofthesefocusgroupswillbeusedtoimprovethesurvey.Inaddition,wewillbeasking furtherquestionsrelatingtoknowledge,attitudesandexperiencesofsubstanceusetosupplement thesurveydata,andwouldalsobeinterestedinlisteningtoanyparticularconcernsyouhaveabout substanceuseingeneral,forexample,whatsubstancesyoungpeopleareusinginyourschoolor area. Interviewswillalsobeconductedwithaselectionofyoungpeopletoobtainfurtherqualitativedata. Aimsofthestudy • • • Developmentofareliableandvalidsurveyforyoungpeople Toobtainanestimateoftheprevalenceofsubstanceuseandemergingtrendsinsubstance usebehaviouramong11-18yearoldsinmainstreamschools Tousefullyinformservicedesignandprovision,policy,practiceandfutureresearch Purposeoftheresearch Themainaimofthisstudyistoidentifycurrenttrendsinsubstanceuse.Thisinformationcanthen demonstratethenecessityforhighqualitydrug,alcoholandlowlevelmentalhealthissueseducation toschools,commissionersandlocalandcentralgovernmentofficials,andbeusedtodevelopmore targetedandeffectivesupportandtreatmentservicesinthefuture. Aswellasalcoholandmorewidelyknownillegaldrugs,suchascannabisandecstasy,youngpeople maybeusingarangeofothersubstances,suchas: • • • • • NovelPsychoactiveSubstances(alsoknownas‘legalhighs’) Prescriptiondrugs Performanceenhancingdrugs E-cigarettesandvaping Energydrinks Trendsandbehavioursrelatingtosubstanceusemayhavechangedsignificantlyinyoungpeople. Thismeansthateducationandtreatmentprogrammesmayalsoneedtobetailoredaccordingly. Wehopetoencourageyoungpeopletoanswerquestionshonestlybyreassuringthemthattheir individualresponseswillbeconfidentialandanypublisheddatawillbeanonymous. Whatnumberofstudentsisrequired? Weareintendingtoconductthesurveyacrossallyeargroups,butifyouwouldpreferustojust sampleaselectednumberofstudentsfromeachyeargroup,ortoconcentrateonyear11s,for example,thatisalsofine. Obtaininginformedconsentfromyoungpeople Informationsheetswillbeprovidedforparentsandguardiansexplainingwhatthestudyinvolvesso thattheywillhavetheopportunitytodeclinefortheirchildtotakepart.Anyqueriesregarding consentcanbediscussedwithourresearcher. Fullyinformedconsentwillbetakenfromallyoungpeople.Informationsheetswilldetailtheaims andobjectivesofthestudyandwhatisinvolvedintakingpart.Onthedayofthesurvey,informed consentwillbetakenfromtheselectedstudentsandtheywillhaveafurtheropportunitytoask questionsandoptoutiftheywish. Howisthesurveyadministered? Thesurveycanbecompletedduringalessontimetabledbytheschooltoreduceanydisruptiontothe teachingschedule,andtakesapproximately30-40minutestocomplete.Youngpeoplewillbesupervised byamemberoftheresearchteamorateacher.Teachersshouldalwaysbepresentforsafeguarding purposes. Thesurveyisadministeredviaasecureonlinemethodthatiseasytouse,andcontainsfilterssothat youngpeoplewhoarenotusingsubstanceswillonlycompletethesectionsofthesurveythatare relevanttothem.Youngpeoplealsohavetheoptiontoskipanyquestionthattheydonotwishto answer.Wehavechosentouseanonlinesurveytosavepaperandthusbemoreenvironmentally friendly. YoungpeoplewillbeabletocompletethesurveyonaPC,laptoportabletcomputer. Ifayoungpersondecidestowithdrawfromthestudywhilecompletingthesurveyorafterwards, theycandothisbyalertingamemberoftheresearchteamwhoissupervisingthesurvey. Confidentiality Allanswerstothequestionnairewillbecollectedviaasecureonlineapplicationandstudentswillnot beidentifiedfromtheirresponses.Noidentifiableinformationaboutparticipantswillbeincludedin thedataanalysis,inanydisseminatedinformationorintheschoolreport.Individualschoolswillalso notbeidentifiedinanypublisheddata. Wewillonlydiscloseinformationtoanyoneoutsideoftheresearchteamifanindividualapproaches amemberoftheteamorschoolstafftoindicatetheymaybeatriskofharmi.e.theyhaveexpressed thedesiretoharmthemselvesoranotherperson. Findingsofthestudy Individualsurveyresponseswillremainconfidential.Schoolswillreceiveareportcontaining prevalenceofsubstancesusedintheirschoolandthemesidentifiedfromthefocusgroups,but individualstudentscannotbeidentifiedfromthis.Inaddition,schoolswillalsoreceiveacopyofthe mainresearchfindings. Safeguardingyoungpeople Thesafetyandwellbeingofyoungpeopleisaveryhighpriorityforus.Itisexpectedthatcompleting thesurveywillbeaninterestingandenjoyableexperienceforyoungpeople.However,intheevent thatcompletingthesurveyraisesanyworriesorconcerns,appropriatesafeguardingprocedureshave beenputinplace. Priortoparticipationinthesurvey,allschoolsmusthaveaclearreferralandsupportpathwayforany youngpersonidentifiedasneedingadditionalsupport. Theresearchersadministeringthesurveyandconductingfocusgroupshavereceivedsafeguarding training.Thesurveyhasreceivedfullethicalapproval. Therewillbealeaflethandedouttoparticipantsattheendoftheclassroomsessionwiththecontact detailsoflocalandnationalsupportproviders,aswellaswhototalktowithintheschool(e.g.named schoolcounsellor).ForthoseschoolsthatcurrentlyhavetheResilienceProgrammeinplace,young peoplemayalreadyhavereceiveddrugandalcoholeducationsessionsfrommembersofthesurvey researchteam.
