ATHLETIC PROGRAM SPECIALIST
GRADE 67
General Statement of Duties
Performs responsible work in planning and supervising various athletic activities in an assigned
area.
Distinguishing Features of the Class
An employee in this class plans and supervises a variety of athletic programs in the Parks and
Recreation Department under the direction of the Athletic Program Supervisor. Work is focused on
athletics. Work involves planning and supervising programs under an umbrella of pre designed
priorities. Work involves planning programs and events with the supervisor and performing delegated
tasks and activities. Work involves supervision of seasonal and volunteer workers engaged in athletics
activities. The employee is required to exercise independent judgment and initiative in resolving
problems of participants in recreation programs. Tact and courtesy are required in frequent contacts
with the public. The employee is subject to hazards of outdoor and indoor environmental conditions.
Work in athletics and sports activity may be subject to the final standards of OSHA blood borne
pathogens. Work is performed under regular supervision and is evaluated by observation, through
consultations and by review of written reports.
Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Duties and Tasks
Organizes and supervises youth and adult team leagues and camps; assists with special
athletic events.
Creates media releases and publicizes programs through a variety of outlets including posters,
brochures, websites, and advertisements.
Assists with Special Olympics programs and activities.
Visits sites regularly to review league play.
Trains and supervises part-time and volunteer workers.
Works in the Parks and Recreation Office answering phone calls and receiving visitors;
provides information about athletic programs to the public.
Books team practices, reschedules games, receives team rosters.
Organizes and conducts officials, coaches and athletic clinics/camps.
Recruits coaches; officiates games when necessary.
Makes minor repairs to athletic equipment, inspects facilities and equipment for needed repairs.
Investigates and assists with participant disciplinary and other problems.
Organizes and supervises special events.
Assists the athletics supervisor with recreation activities.
Additional Duties
May travel with teams to regional games.
May act in the absence of the Athletic Program Supervisor.
Performs related tasks as required.
Recruitment and Selection Guidelines
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Considerable knowledge of a variety of athletic programming and events planning and
supervision.
Knowledge of the application of information technology to assigned tasks.

Working knowledge of the policies and procedures of the Parks and Recreation Department.
Working knowledge of local, state, and federal recreation rules governing assigned areas.
Skill in collaborative conflict resolution.
Ability to instruct and train participants.
Ability to coordinate and plan activities for a wide variety of interests.
Ability to work effectively with persons of various ages.
Ability to deal tactfully, firmly and courteously with the public.
Ability to prepare written reports and publicity material.
Ability to maintain an effective working relationship with other employee.
Physical Requirements
Must be able to perform basic life functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching,
standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, talking, and hearing.
Must be able to perform light work exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to
10 pounds of force frequently, and /or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
Must have visual acuity to transcribe, prepare and analyze data, utilize computer terminal and
perform accounting.
Desirable Education and Experience
Graduation from a four year college or university with a degree in sports administration,
recreation management, cultural arts or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and
experience.
Special Requirement
Possession of a valid N.C. driver's license.
Possession of First Aid and CPR certifications.
