Estimating the value of travel time in rural Africa from a stated preference experiment on water source choices Peter Kimuyu Joseph Cook Josephine Gatua Annalise Blum Dale Whittington Despite its importance in an investment analyses, there are few estimates of the value of travel time in Africa. We estimate the value of travel time by asking 388 rural households in Meru County, Kenya to rank two new hypothetical water sources against their current water source. The two new hypothetical sources were described as safe and reliable to use, but varied in their distance from the household and the price charged per jerrican. We observe the characteristics of their current "primary" water source. Our results imply that the range of value of travel times is USD 0.14 -- 0.34 per hour, or 34% - 83% of the unskilled wage rate in the area. Project dates 2013-2015
