Academic Clinical Lecturer, Honorary Specialist Registrar
Professor Eugene Healy, Chair of Dermatology
________________________________________________________________________
Introduction
The University of Southampton, together with the University Hospital Southampton NHS
Foundation Trust, wishes to appoint an Academic Clinical Lecturer (ACL) in Dermatology.
The post-holder will pursue his/her development of research and teaching within
Dermatopharmacology in the Academic Unit of Clinical and Experimental Medicine Sciences
of the University of Southampton Faculty of Medicine. The ACL will also have clinical
commitments at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust with training in
clinical skills required for specialist accreditation and to full registration within the
Dermatology.
The post is subject to terms and conditions of service determined by the University of
Southampton and in its honorary clinical capacity by the UHS NHS FT board.
Details of the Post
Academic training and development of the ACL
This is an academic post sponsored by NIHR via the University of Southampton and Health
Education England - Wessex. It provides a career pathway for able and ambitious trainees
in Dermatology who have already shown excellence in dermatology research by
successfully completing a higher degree, e.g. MD or PhD. The development and
strengthening of the successful candidate’s dermatology research will take place in the
dermatology academic group within the CES Unit, a multi-disciplinary division within the
Faculty of Medicine consisting of clinical and basic scientists focusing on mechanisms
underlying a range of diseases caused by environmental agents, including inflammation
and cancer. The strengths of the Faculty of Medicine result from the combination of an
excellent scientific community focused on elucidation of fundamental mechanisms
underlying human diseases, including cancer.
The University of Southampton (http://www.southampton.ac.uk/), member of the Russell
Group of highly research active universities, and UHS NHS FT have developed a combined
research strategy since 1992. The Southampton Academic Dermatology Unit is one of the
major academic and research dermatology centres in the UK and has an international
reputation for skin research. It is placed within the Clinical Experimental Sciences Academic
Unit which comprises approximately 200 researchers within the Faculty of Medicine. In the
2014 Research Excellence Framework, 75% of the research in Medicine was rated as "world
leading" or "internationally excellent", 94% of the research impact was rated as 4*+3* (i.e.
the top grades) and the research environment rated as excellent (100% at 4*+3*).
The research in the academic dermatology unit is focussed on molecular processes in skin
resulting from interactions with environmental factors including ultraviolet radiation,
allergens and irritants, which result in a variety of neoplastic and inflammatory skin
disorders. Specifically, the research examines mechanisms underlying susceptibility to skin
cancer, genetics, and cutaneous immunology. The investigative approaches range across
the spectrum of translational research, using cellular and molecular laboratory methods,
and a strong emphasis on clinical research in humans, capitalising on the availability of the
NIHR/Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Facility and adjoining NIHR Biomedical Research
Centre.
The academic dermatology unit was established in 1998, and the department has an
excellent publication record, and has secured a number of prestigious grants, fellowships
(including Wellcome and MRC) and industrial grants. The department has a core of
scientific personnel comprising clinical academics, post-doctoral scientists and graduate
PhD students. The ACL will join the academic dermatology unit, which is directed by Prof
Healy who has the additional experience of having trained along the MRC fellowship route
at Clinical Training, Clinician Scientist and Senior Clinical Fellowship levels.
Research Duties of the ACL
The ACL will have 50% of his/her post protected for further research, benefiting from the
facilities of the academic dermatology group and CES, as well as any other facilities from
within the Faculty of Medicine, as appropriate. The ACL will be responsible to Prof Eugene
Healy, Academic Lead for Dermatology and Director of Clinical Academic Training in
Southampton. The ACL is expected to continue the research he/she started during his/her
PhD studies in dermatology, moving from a position of an accomplished student towards
that of an independent researcher who would be competitive for a Senior Lecturer position.
It is expected that the ACL will apply for an intermediate fellowship to support his/her
research in order to facilitate development towards independent research. It is anticipated
that the ACL will also provide occasional teaching at undergraduate and/or postgraduate
levels as directed by Prof Healy.
Clinical training of the ACL
The clinical training of the ACL will be provided and supervised by the Specialist Training
Committee (STC), allocating 50% of the ACL’s training time to clinical work that would lead to
completion of specialist training. The trainee will join the Wessex Specialist Training
Programme in Dermatology, which is co-ordinated through the Health Education England –
Wessex (formerly known as Wessex Deanery). Experience offered will cover the training
needs of future consultants in all aspects of this specialty, as well as academic career
development. The post will ultimately lead to accreditation (CCT) in dermatology. The
Wessex dermatology programme provides a very strong clinical training environment closely
integrated with a high level academic setting. The programme is based in a major teaching
hospital and a number of district general hospitals: University Hospital Southampton NHS
Foundation Trust (UHS), St Mary’s and Haslar Hospitals in Portsmouth and Christchurch and
Poole Hospitals in Dorset. The ACL will be placed in one of the accredited NHS Trusts in
agreement between the ACL, the STC Chair/Programme Director, Dr Bronwyn Hughes, and
the Academic Lead, Prof Eugene Healy, but it is anticipated that the clinical training will be
based where possible in Southampton in order to facilitate continuing contact between the
2
ACL and his/her academic mentors. The Southampton department comprises 11
consultants, 8 of whom are NHS staff and 3 are academic. The department offers a
comprehensive range of dermatology training and provides a solid grounding in evidencebased practice. Full details of Dermatology within University Hospitals Southampton NHS
Foundation Trust can be found at
http://www.uhs.nhs.uk/ContactUs/Directoryofconsultants/Consultants-by-service/Medicalconditions-consultants/Dermatology/Dermatology-consultants.aspx while details of the
whole programme in the region can be obtained on request.
Administrative duties
The post-holder will be required to undertake administrative duties associated with his/her
research and associated with the care of patients in his/her clinical role.
General provisions
Subject to the provisions of the Terms and Conditions of Service, the post-holder will be
expected to observe the University’s and the Trust’s agreed policies and procedures,
including those concerning research and clinical matters, and to follow the standing orders
and financial instructions of these institutions. The post-holder will be expected to make
sure that there are adequate arrangements for hospital staff involved in the care of his/her
patients and to be able to contact him/her when necessary.
Residence
Residence within either 10 miles of or thirty minutes by road from Southampton General
Hospital is a requirement of this post unless specific approval for alternative arrangements
is given by the Trust.
Visiting
The main point of contact is Prof Eugene Healy ([email protected]), Academic Lead and
Director of the Clinical Academic Training Programme.
Review of the Job Description
This job description will be reviewed each year by the post-holder, Prof Eugene Healy and
the clinical lead of the relevant clinical department. Local procedures will be followed in the
event of any disagreement over proposed changes culminating in an appeal to a subcommittee of the University of Southampton. Job description changes will be reviewed
under the Service Level Agreement.

procedure for considering whether to terminate the substantive contract of
employment with the University in such circumstances is set out in the University’s
Statutes and Ordinances from time to time in force and in a protocol between the
University and the NHS Trust. The appointee will be required during their tenure of

University subject to a maximum contribution of £4500. The purchase of such a house
or flat must be as a consequence of taking up the appointment and the claim must
normally be submitted within twelve months of taking up the post.
8.
The person appointed will be required to observe the Charter, Statutes and Ordinances

University's Equal Opportunities Policy:
"The University of Southampton confirms its commitment to a comprehensive policy of
