Personal Statement I am the inaugural Chief of the Division of Surgical Oncology and the Chief of Surgical Services for the UNM Cancer Center. Since my recruitment in 2009 we have built a vibrant academic Division of Surgical Oncology which is now comprised of 7 clinical faculty in general surgical oncology, 1 PhD basic science faculty, 5 midlevels and a number of support staff. I also assist in the programmatic development and multi-disciplinary integration of sub-specialty surgical programs that include orthopedic oncology, head/neck surgery, urology, plastics & reconstructive surgery, thoracic surgery and gynecologic oncology. As a physician scientist, my laboratory has focused on key signal transduction pathways that control cancer metastases. In addition to this basic science work, I partner with my colleagues in the population sciences to understand the patterns of disease in New Mexico, the disparities that exist and how we may target them to impact change for better health outcomes of our population. Thus, I am ideally suited to be a part of the UNM Cancer Center P30. B.
