Approval Signature PURPOSE To describe the requirements for proper handling of trash so that it is not a potential source of contamination for dietary supplements. II. SCOPE This SOP addresses the requirements for safe, proper handling and disposal of trash in the interior and exterior of the plant. These requirements for handling and disposal of trash also apply to all satellite plants and warehouses. III. IV. RESPONSIBILITIES A. As part of the Good Manufacturing Practices Employee Training Program, Management must ensure that employees are trained in the proper handling and disposal of trash in the interior and exterior of the plant. B. Management is responsible for providing approved containers for collection of trash in the interior and exterior of the plant, for establishing an effective trash collection program, and for ensuring that the requirements of this procedure are observed. PROCEDURE A. 81931529 Interior Trash Control 1. An adequate number of approved, properly-labeled, covered, and conveniently located waste containers must be provided for collection of trash where exposed products are handled. Waste containers that are part of a color-code system are recommended. 2. Waste containers in the interior of the plant must be emptied at least once daily to prevent overflow, the development of odors, the potential to attract and become a breeding place for pests, and be a potential source for product contamination. 3. In rest rooms where paper towels are used, conveniently-located, covered waste containers must be provided. An exception is made for open stainless steel waste containers for paper towels that are flush with walls. Approval Signature Waste containers must not be permitted in individual toilet stalls for discarding of soiled toilet paper. Exterior Trash Control 1. Adequate trash and waste disposal facilities must be available outside the plant to handle the needs of the plant. 2. Covered dumpsters must be used to collect process waste, and open dumpster may be used to collect cardboard, paper and inorganic materials. 3. Areas around dumpsters must be maintained clean and free of debris and liquids. Vegetation in close proximity to dumpsters must be kept well trimmed so that it does not serve as harborage for pests. 4. Dumpsters must be emptied at a frequency that will prevent overflowing conditions, objectionable odors and the potential to attract and become a breeding place for pests. CONFIDENTIAL Date
