PURPOSE
To describe the requirements for proper handling of trash so that it is not a
potential source of contamination for dietary supplements.
II.
SCOPE
This SOP addresses the requirements for safe, proper handling and disposal of
trash in the interior and exterior of the plant. These requirements for handling and
disposal of trash also apply to all satellite plants and warehouses.
III.
IV.
RESPONSIBILITIES
A.
As part of the Good Manufacturing Practices Employee Training Program,
Management must ensure that employees are trained in the proper handling
and disposal of trash in the interior and exterior of the plant.
B.
Management is responsible for providing approved containers for collection of
trash in the interior and exterior of the plant, for establishing an effective trash
collection program, and for ensuring that the requirements of this procedure
are observed.
PROCEDURE

Interior Trash Control
1.
An adequate number of approved, properly-labeled, covered, and
conveniently located waste containers must be provided for collection of
trash where exposed products are handled. Waste containers that are
part of a color-code system are recommended.
2.
Waste containers in the interior of the plant must be emptied at least
once daily to prevent overflow, the development of odors, the potential
to attract and become a breeding place for pests, and be a potential
source for product contamination.
3.
In rest rooms where paper towels are used, conveniently-located,
covered waste containers must be provided. An exception is made for
open stainless steel waste containers for paper towels that are flush with
walls. Free-standing waste container design must be such that
employees are not required to touch the cover of the waste container.

Waste containers must not be permitted in individual toilet stalls for
discarding of soiled toilet paper.
Exterior Trash Control
1.
Adequate trash and waste disposal facilities must be available outside
the plant to handle the needs of the plant.
2.
Covered dumpsters must be used to collect process waste, and open
dumpster may be used to collect cardboard, paper and inorganic
materials.
3.
Areas around dumpsters must be maintained clean and free of debris
and liquids. Vegetation in close proximity to dumpsters must be kept
well trimmed so that it does not serve as harborage for pests.
4.
Dumpsters must be emptied at a frequency that will prevent overflowing
conditions, objectionable odors and the potential to attract and become
a breeding place for pests.
