Job Title: Clinical Investigation Nurse
Job ref: CSS-0061-13
Grade: 5
Department: Clinical Science and Services
Accountable to Clinical Director (QMHA) and Staff Manager of
CIC as appropriate.
Responsible for: n/a
Job summary:
The position holder should take an active role in assisting to fulfill the performance goals and objectives of the current
research activities of the Clinical Investigation Centre, providing the highest standards of clinical research practice.
Competency: Knowledge and experience
Key tasks:
Liaise with line managers and other members of the department in designing achievable clinical trial projects within the
constraints of a university veterinary hospital setting.
Organise a suitable programme of case admissions and data acquisition.
Ensure successful co-ordination of the clinical research programmes into the normal working environment of the College’s
veterinary hospitals.
Co-ordination with the Epidemiology Group to maximise statistical power of the clinical research programmes.
Oversee all aspects of the clinical research programmes ensuring accuracy and dependability of the data acquisition.
Ensure that the highest standards of animal welfare are maintained at all times.
To undertake training courses as identified by line manager including Home Office courses and be prepared to hold a
Personal Licence (PIL) and work under ASPA.

Key tasks:
Demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills when engaging with individuals in the RVC, the RVC small animal referral and
clinical investigation centre team members.
Generate written reports as and when required.
Writing of study material including, but not limited to, study protocols, standard operating procedures and Ethics and
Welfare Committee submissions.

Deliver effective research activities within the unit as appropriate.

Key tasks:
Identification and recruitment of cases by monitoring admissions diaries.
Collection, storage and processing of samples from in-patients and from field visits.
Obtaining data for longitudinal studies.
Conducting field or practice visits.
Assistance with animal handling and clinical procedures, particularly on field or practice visits.
Maintaining records, data entry and database management.
Ensure standards for quality of service delivery are consistently met and be receptive for continuous change and
improvements.
Resolve complex and difficult research issues.

Translate policy and analysis into practical actions.

Key tasks:
Contribute ideas and information in support of the research marketing plan.
Participate in the administration and management of the clinical investigation centre.

Engage with day-to-day problems that crop up within the team to enable the research tasks to be managed most effectively.

Contribute to the advancement of science and our management/understanding of disease processes and support the clinical
director and clinical investigation team members in research activities.

Comply with all relevant RVC, CIC and RVC small animal referral hospital policies, procedures and guidelines, including
those relating to Equality, Health and Safety and Data Protection.
Respect and care appropriately for all CIC, RVC small animal referral hospital and RVC property and facilities.
