What is the rock cycle? Answer: 2. What are the three main types of rock? Answer: 2 2 2 2 2 2 3 3 3 3 3 3 Igneous Rock Everything has a melting point, even rocks. When rocks are heated to their melting point they become liquid. Scientists call liquid rock, lava or magma. Magma is liquid rock that is under the Earth’s surface and lava is liquid rock that is on the Earth’s surface. Regardless of where the liquid rock is, when it cools and solidifies it becomes igneous rock. Igneous rock is rock formed when molten rock cools and solidifies. Magma or Lava Igneous Rock Cooling 1. How are igneous rocks formed? Answer: Video: Lava Sculptures: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qH0Ekmx7Aek What makes igneous rocks different? Just like all rocks, igneous rocks are made of a mixture of minerals. The minerals in the magma or lava that formed the igneous rock determine the mixture of minerals that are in it. All igneous rock formations are a unique mix of minerals. These unique mixes of minerals make them different. They can be different colors, textures and density. Different Type of Igneous Rocks 1. Why are different igneous rock formations different from each other? Answer: Types of Igneous Rock Formations There are two types of igneous rock formations, intrusive and extrusive. The difference between the two has to do with where they are formed. Intrusive Igneous Rock As heat from the Earth’s core rises through the crust it melts its way through the rocks above. Sometimes it makes it to the surface forming a volcano. Most of the time however it cools before it reaches the surface. When this happens scientists call the igneous rock that is formed intrusive igneous rock. Intrusive igneous rock is formed by magma that cools underground. Extrusive Igneous Rock When the molten rock reaches the surface it becomes lava. When lava cools and solidifies we call it extrusive igneous rock. Extrusive igneous rock is formed from lava that cooled on the Earth’s surface. Extrusive Igneous Rock Intrusive Igneous Rock Sedimentary Rock Magma Video Link: Igneous Rock http://www.schooltube.com/video/1db4b49ffe290cd8fd16/ 1. What are the two main types of igneous rock?
