Carole King, Tapestry, and the Troubadour
Reunion Tour: The Astrology of a Cultural Phenomenon
by John Marchesella
I
N THE SUMMER OF 2010, I had the great
pleasure of seeing Carole King, James
Taylor, and other amazing musicians in
the Troubadour Reunion Concert at
Madison Square Garden in New York.
(Those readers under age 50 can find
these names on Wikipedia).
My companion, 42 years old and probably
the youngest and newest fan in the huge
arena, remarked, Wow! The place is sold
out. I’m shocked, and then, like a knife
through my heart, she said I thought all of
their original fans would be dead or too
old to stay up this late.
after the revolutionary configuration of
Uranus-Pluto in Virgo opposite Saturn in
Pisces of the mid-60s. By this time, Pluto
and Neptune were changing signs to Libra
and Sagittarius respectively and, very
notably, it was just a month after the
break-up of the Beatles. Indeed, the world
of music was changing.
Little did she know the effect of these
musicians on a generation, and more
specifically, the phenomenon that King’s
Tapestry album was back in the day.
Granted, it wasn’t the Beatles or the
Stones or anything like Woodstock, but
it’s what followed their era in music that
set a new template.
For such a remarkable impact on a generation, we would expect to see equally remarkable astrological indications…but, we
don’t, really…except for a surprising one.
Yes, of course, it is highly significant that
the album was recorded, released, and
skyrocketed in the midst of King’s Saturn
Return, which includes the conjunction to
her natal Mars, often a time when a new
work direction fires up. And of course, it
helps to have Mars on the World Axis at
15° of a fixed sign, in her case. On the
other side of Saturn is Uranus. (Note: the
World Axis consists of 0° of the cardinal
signs and 15° of the fixed signs.)
Rave reviews, Grammy Awards (when they
had, at least, a little meaning), and sales
that even broke the records of the Beatles!
Ironically, John Lennon once said that in
their early years, he and Paul McCartney
just aspired to be the British version of
Goffin and King, her earlier incarnation
with her hit-writing husband, Gerry Goffin.
And all this from a woman in the music industry! That was unheard of before this time.
Specifically, the release date of the
Tapestry album was January 30, 1971, well
This Saturn Return also connects with the
natal square to her Sun and Mercury in
Aquarius, breaking her from her 4th house
past and perhaps forcing her to overcome
deep-seated fears and insecurities of
working and performing as a solo act. We
can assume this could not have been a
comfortable success for her. It is also
relevant that transiting Saturn was rising
above the horizon, throwing his weight to
the top of the chart. If one does the tasks
of Saturn below the horizon, one can reap
a bountiful harvest as Saturn rises about
the horizon.
Interesting, too, there is a triple whammy
connection between Saturn and Mercury.
First, in the natal chart, Saturn in Taurus
squares Sun in Aquarius. Second,
because this was the time of her Saturn

Return, by implication, transiting Saturn
was also in square to natal Mercury. And
third, Mercury doesn’t move very much
by progression because she was born in
the midst of its retrograde phase, so
progressed Mercury was just passing out
of orb of the square to natal Saturn.
Ordinarily, we would not associate these
planets with a generational accomplishment, much less a musical one, but
because they rule the 4th house and 11th
house, she was able to put her finger on
the pulse of the public to create something popular. The rules of rulership
should never be forgotten in predictive or
natal interpretation.
Also, the influence of Mercury shows up
on all the writing she did on the album,
i.e., music and lyrics, as well as the close
communal connections between the
musicians on the album. Even the
personalized liner notes were a big deal
back in the day. A noteworthy astrological
indication of the unexpectedness of the
album’s success is the lunar eclipse that
took place at 20° Leo 56’ on February 10,
1971, just days after its release, which
took place in her 10th house, within a
degree of opposition to her Sun. Furthermore, since that was her 1971 solar return,
the eclipse’s effects were felt throughout
her personal year, sustaining the album’s
success. That’s a good deal of exposure,
to say the least! Perhaps the finger of fate
is not so fickle, after all.

All of these factors, however, are still not
enough for this astrologer to explain the
effect of Tapestry on the music industry
and for its generational effect.
The one transit, and it’s a surprising one
that does explain the album’s impact is
Pluto’s partile conjunction to natal Neptune. We don’t usually associate the coming together of transiting outer planets
with natal generational planets in a personal horoscope to symbolize the connection
between the individual and the collective.
So, what makes this one so special?
Well, first of all, the most obvious keywords
describe it: a transformation (Pluto) of the
music (Neptune) world. To boot, her Neptune and the transiting Pluto are at a critical
degree, at the end of Virgo, and even more
significantly, within a degree of the World
Axis (0° Cardinal), which, as already mentioned, connects with her natal Mars. By
house placement in the Placidus system,
this conjunction sits at the end of the 11th
house within orb of the 12th house. In other
words, this is where the collective consciousness meets the collective unconscious. Her musical ability had the potential
to tune in with the Zeitgeist, so to speak,
and transiting Pluto fulfilled the potential. A
very important factor in predictive astrology
is the axiom that the potential for the forecasted event must be in the natal horoscope. That’s what separates a pat interpretation from a tailor-made one for the

individual. More personally for her,
Neptune is the ruler of the natal 5th
house, another indication of her selfexpression serving the needs of the
collective. The interpretation of rulership
is that the house serves the ruler. In other
words, we, the public, created Tapestry.
Carole King just channeled it for us, but of
course, when an individual expresses or
experiences something for the collective,
it’s not a mere fete.
That’s what I saw at that concert that night.
A mob of people sharing in the ownership of
our songs, songs that expressed our experiences, experiences that were, at once, individual and unique to each of us as well as to
the collective and universal. Obviously,
with Pluto coming from the natal 10th
house, she received great recognition for
the work and had the natural potential to
make such a social impact with her career.
One of the interpretations of the natal
potential of Pluto in the 10th is to
regenerate/recreate/re-invent/revise one’s
career and reputation. Tapestry certainly
did that, given that it was a comeback
project, resurrecting her out from the pop
songs of the early 60s and into the rank of
a serious songwriter and performer.
And by the way, who else would write a
song entitled You’ve Got a Friend but an
Aquarius! Sometimes, our astrological
symbols manifest in some uncannily literal
ways. Here’s another example of that.

Among the many other ties of friendship
and creativity between their charts, we see
a very notable conjunction of his ruling
planet Mercury in Aquarius to her Sun
and Mercury which, again square her natal
Saturn and Uranus. The enjoyment of each
other’s company and camaraderie in their
mutual professional endeavors might also be
seen in the close conjunction between her
natal Jupiter in Gemini and his MC. A
quick glimpse of their composite chart
(using midpoints between house cusps
and planets) shows us a Libra Ascendant
conjoined with Neptune, and a conjunction of Venus and Jupiter in Pisces! So,
who else should declare undying friendship for each other in song? Interesting,
too, is that their composite Sun in Pisces
is in the same sign as Taylor’s natal Sun
(the masculine figure), and the composite
Moon is in Aquarius (indicating the
feminine influence, namely, King’s natal
Sun in Aquarius).
Another interesting feature of this composite chart is the timing factor. This specific
concert took place at the infamous and

The hit version of You’ve Got a Friend
was actually recorded by James Taylor,
whose rendition might be even more
memorable than King’s version. When we
compare their horoscopes, we see his
Virgo Ascendant within a degree of
conjunction to her North Node in the 11th
house. Talk about the bonds of friendship!

famous Madison Square Garden in the
immediate time of the Lunar Eclipse on June
26, 2010 at 4° Capricorn 50’, in aspect to the
angles of the composite chart. And the
extended tour took place while Saturn and
Pluto were in aspect to the angles of the
composite chart, i.e., awakening the dead,
raising the dead from their graves, and
having the skeletons rattle in the closets.
And here’s another bit of astro-irony. Tapestries are represented by the asteroid,
Pallas Athene, which sits exactly at the bottom of King’s natal chart at 28° Capricorn
18’, opposite the MC! Do you think the
gods have a good laugh at us sometimes?
So, besides astrologically exemplifying
these horoscopes, the points of this article
to take away are:
1. One of the best ways to learn
astrology is to examine the chart of a wellknown person when you are reading his or
her autobiography, seeing a biopic, or
looking for the development in a person’s
long-term body of work and lasting effects
on the collective.
2. People with difficult charts can
succeed in the world, although what’s
more important than success, is being true
to one’s self in the manifestation of one’s
potential. In looking at King’s natal chart,
we see some very challenging aspects,
namely, those squares between the Taurus
and Aquarius planets, involving the
angular houses as well as the not-so-easy
8th house. (An interesting twist on this
aspect is the joint rulership of Saturn and
Uranus of Aquarius.) The opposition from
Pluto to Venus, ruler of the chart, is not a
cakewalk either. And those who think
retrograde planets are delayed or
restrained in expression will have to think
again, given King’s ruler, Venus, as well as
Mercury are retrograde. So, don’t jump to
negative conclusions when you see such
natal placements.
3. Although it is imperative to know the
rules of natal interpretation as well as
predictive astrology, we never really know
what the indications of manifestation will
be. Ordinarily, we might miss the significance of something like transiting
Pluto on natal Neptune, but in this case,
it’s all-important for the native’s experience as well as her connection with the
world. Life might be predictable, but
astrology is full of surprises.

Message from the Chair
Dear Members,
W
ELL, ONE MONTH DOWN, 35 MORE TO GO, I’m still standing and we’re not out of
business, so I guess we’re getting off to a good start!
My thanks to all of our Board members and staff for their patience, support, and
guidance through our launch as well as to everyone who very kindly sent me a
vote of confidence. A special thank-you goes to Ken Irving, our terrific webmaster.
It does not take one to know one. It takes one not-in-the-know to be grateful to the
one in-the-know!
I would like to welcome to the National Board Demetrius Bagley as Director of
Communications and Media, and Loretta Lopez as Publications Director. He’s
following through on upgrading all of our IT programs, including old cassette
tapes to CDs, uh, MP3s, and increasing our social media presence; and she is
sharing her professional skills and gifts as graphic designer to our bi-annual
journals.
I also want to commend Mark Kuenzel and Tad Mann for their years of service in
these positions respectively, and we can all look forward to meeting up with them
again at UAC 2012.
And speaking of UAC 2012, NCGR has announced our pre-conference events.
Bruce Scofield will present 2012: Our Clients, the Press, and the Mayan Calendar,
Frank Piechoski will offer Presentation Skills for Astrologers, and there will be a
walking tour of New Orleans, visiting the astrological sites on the streets of our
wonderful hosting city and wrapping up with a group discussion on the mundane astrology of the recent events there.
Please continue to visit the website for UAC 2012 for details and pre-registration
for these events as well as other unfolding information about this great coming
together of astrologers.
As I write this letter to you, we are approaching International Astrology Day, but
by the time it’s received, our own personal holiday will have taken place. So, I
hope each NCGR chapter as well as our members-at-large enjoyed some celebration of astrology and our community. Please feel free to write to us and let us
know how you basked in the Aries Ingress, that IAD is, and we’ll post your
notices if you like.
And just a reminder that NCGR-PAA is no longer a membership organization, but
it is still operating as a certification service and networking website. So, please
visit www.astrologersalliance.org.
I ask you, the reader of this edition of memberletter, to remind other NCGR
members, who might not be up to snuff that this publication is now sent on-line
bi-monthly. If they are not noticing it, reading it on-line, or downloading a printout of it, then they are missing out, not only on one of their best member benefits,
but also on one helluva info letter! So, please mention it to your fellow members,
and better yet, discuss its great articles.
Until next time, peace.

Call for Papers for
NCGR Research Journal
T
HIS IS A CALL FOR PAPERS (ARTICLES) for
the NCGR Autumn-Winter 2011
Research Journal. The theme for the
journal is Modern Planets (Uranus,
Neptune and Pluto). The articles (papers)
should attempt to shed light on the
influence of the modern planets on any
one or more of the following areas based
on research: political, social, economical
events, spiritual evolution; human
evolution, technological evolution, world
economies, globalization (collective
living), modern medicine, longevity, or any
other subject to which you can apply
research methods.
Guidelines
As NCGR Research Director, I would like
to invite you all to submit your research
for the upcoming Research Journal
(Winter Solstice 2011) by submitting your
abstract, and subsequently submitting
your paper. Astrological research can be
divided in two broad categories:
subjective and objective.
Subjective research typically includes a
host of implied assumptions and
limitations. However, it is still important to
carry out such research to gain more
insight into astrology. And discussing
these results with total openness and
inquiries with an unprejudiced and nonjudgmental mind will certainly result in
advancing astrology in a more meaningful
and positive way.
Objective research, on the other hand,
would stay away from making many
assumptions, or minimizing them as much
as possible. For instance, a research
topic such as weather predictions or
economy predictions would more likely
depend on planetary cycles and wouldn’t
require chart analysis; while a research
topic that involves an event or personal
chart is likely to be subjective.
The work is expected to be original,
research-based, and not published
elsewhere. The article must clearly state
the research goal or goals, as well as list
the assumptions or limitations as clearly
as possible. The research should stand on
its own. The article does not need to be
concluded with a successful research
finding. It’s the process and attempts that
have been made to carry out the research
that would be given serious consideration.
The invitation to participate and share your
research work with others is open to all,
including veteran writers as well as newcomers. Please send your abstract (80 words
maximum), which must clearly state the
objective of your research, to me at the email
address below no later than May 1, 2011.
Please email me the completed article
(approximately 6000 words) by August 1,
2011. If you have questions, please
contact me directly.

square the Aquarius Midheaven. It
indicates that he is an aggressive individual and someone who does it his way.
My next thought was how complex an
individual he is, and why at this time is he
on such a self-destructive path.
Since he is a public figure, I set my sights
on the cardinal axis (0° cardinal signs) and
looked at his compulsion to live his life
out in the public eye with no closed
drapes to retreat behind. Then I looked at
his chart on the 90° dial and saw that the
midpoint of his Sun/Venus=Uranus/
Cupido=cardinal axis=Hades. In 1974 at
age 9, when his progressed Sun was at
the midpoint of his Moon and his Uranus,
he was given a small part in one of his
father’s films, and that paved the way to
influence who he was to become.
Sheen pursued acting in high school,
which graduated into film roles. His Sun/
Venus=cardinal axis planetary picture tells
us that the public would receive him in a
positive manner as would the opposite
sex, big time. But his Sun/Venus=Uranus/
Cupido=cardinal axis=Hades planetary
picture tells a darker story, and when hit
by a transiting planet shows us a nastier
side. Uranus/Cupido=the cardinal axis
could indicates a changing cast member;
adding his Sun/Venus=Hades tells us that
he likes the attention he gets from
females. Add Hades and you get someone
who likes hookers, and the seedier side of
sex (where hurting his partner may be part
of the game). He is one person who
should never have married, as he is not
monogamous, especially since the
cardinal axis + his Moon =
Jupiter, and this Moon is
22 ½° to his Venus. This
man can only be faithful to
one woman for a short
period of time. He can be
very charming but does
not know about humility.

Sheen’s Mercury is
22 ½° to Pluto. He would
rather tell others what to

born when Saturn was
opposite Uranus. This
says that at times he
will find himself
caught between a
rock and a hard place.

brings in his Mercury

Venus. What was he thinking? He
married Brooke Mueller, his third wife on
June 30, 2008 just after transiting Uranus

midpoint of his Jupiter and transiting
Uranus. It is very clear that he never
consulted an astrologer before he got
F

married. All three of his marriage dates
indicated that they would have a short life
span.
On April 23, 2003, the successful television show, Two and a Half Men, in which
he starred, aired as transiting Jupiter conjoined the midpoint of his Pluto and the
cardinal axis—what a configuration for a
successful change in his world!? At the
same time, his progressed Sun was 17°
Libra 12’ (keep that figure in mind) semisquare his Ascendant, and placed on the
midpoint of his Moon and Midheaven,
and 22 ½° to his Mars. He began a whole
new career and different phase of his life.
Sheen’s latest troubles began around
Christmas 2010. In the wee hours of
December 26, a hooker, who was entertaining him, called the police, as both the
cardinal axis and his Hades were on the
midpoint of transiting Saturn and natal
Sun and Uranus, and transiting Pluto was
semi-square his MC/ASC career axis. All
this heralded the beginning of the end, as
transiting Uranus was midpoint his Moon
and Jupiter. The media’s presence and
reporting of the chaos and total irresponsibility meant that the incident completely
played out in the press.
Let’s now revisit his progressed Sun.
When his program Two and a Half Men
first aired, his progressed Sun was 17°
Libra 12’. On January 26, 2011 Saturn stationed retrograde at 17° Libra 14’, foreshadowing CBS’s decision to stop filming
the show and fire Sheen. Saturn will give
you rewards if you have your nose to the
grindstone. On the other hand,,it will yank
it all away if you are playing games and
are taking life for granted, as Sheen has
done and continues to do.
Transiting Uranus has just crossed the
cardinal axis again. This set off his entire
chart on March 12, followed on March 31
by Mercury going retrograde on the
midpoint of natal Neptune and the
cardinal axis, preparing the stage for his
exit from center stage. The midpoint of his
natal and progressed Sun, which tells you
where he is at this stage of his life, falls
midpoint the Mercury station retrograde
and his Sun /Uranus midpoint. On April 9,
Pluto stations retrograde at 7° Capricorn
30’, which is 22 1/2° from his Uranus, the
midpoint of his Pluto and Saturn, and on
the midpoint of his Moon and Venus. Not
very good for his wallet. Then Mercury
will go direct on April 23 on the midpoint
of his Mars and Pluto, and 22 ½° degrees
to his Moon/Uranus midpoint, and his
Mercury and Ascendant.
Most important, however, is the question
of his addictive personality, and where it
is indicated in the chart. It is not the
Neptune alone but the combination of
Pluto (obsessive compulsion), and
Neptune (to need to escape), and this
midpoint in his chart falls on his ASC. In
addition, this midpoint is 22 ½° to his
Mars and was set off by the retrograde
Saturn station. It will be transited three
times by Mercury, beginning with the full
moon on March 19. His ride on the fast
track to destruction could either land him
in a mental hospital or the morgue.
Postscript. In the time since this article
was written (mid-February), Charlie Sheen
failed in his first attempt at a one-man
show. Just as I said earlier in the article
when I noted that Mercury retrograde on
March 31 on the midpoint of natal
Neptune and the cardinal axis would
prepare the stage for his exit from center
stage, Charlie Sheen premiered his oneman show in Detroit on April 2, 2011. The
midpoint of transiting Sun and Saturn was
midpoint his natal Sun/Neptune and
22 1/2° to his Saturn and the cardinal axis.
This planetary combination reflected the
fact that Sheen bombed, and many audience members walked out and screamed
for their money back. Charlie, you really
have to get yourself a good astrologer.

Transneptunian Planets
Ð Cupido. Family, marriage, groups
and community, society as a social group,
art, and artist colony. Negative side is
clannishness and exclusivity.
Ñ Hades. Secrets, nastiness, vile
and evil matters, poverty, neediness.
Medicine, especially surgeons, astrology, and prostitution. I think we should
include legal practices, since lawyers’
actions are sometimes more criminal than
their clients’ activities.
Ò Zeus. Fire, machinery, rockets
explosives. Power to rise above,
productive performances, creative
energies, goal-oriented, fearless, and
independent. Negative side is out-ofcontrol energy like rage, overconfidence,
egotism, and procreation.
Ó Kronos. Ruler, leader, father, king,
nobility. Authority, judge, D.A. head doctor,
the boss man or woman. Head of state,
police, independence, and mastery. Anyone looked up to and held in high esteem.
Ô Apollon. A combination of Jupiter
and Gemini, it represents mass
communications, great success, distant
places, commerce, trade, and science.
Getting away with murder, great powers
of intellect, and multiplicity. Negative side
is overconfidence, overlooked details,
not seeing the forest from the trees.
Õ Admetos. Begging, beginning
and end of life. Closed in spaces like
closets, boxes, coffins, even washing
machines (cycles plus closed-in spaces)
and fences. Most Uranian astrologers
have a strong Admetos, because we use
dials that turn. Less, intense focus and
deep concentration, plus raw materials,
landfills, real estate, and durability.

Omnipotence, power, plants, and storms.
Negative side is violent and out-ofcontrol energy.
× Poseidon. Enlightenment, spiritual

Rectification Based on Soul Purpose
and Zodiacal Divisions
by Winai Ouypornprasert
A
CORRECT BIRTH MOMENT IS OF utmost
importance for natal chart
analyses. Rectification is a reverse
process from known information of the
native to specify the actual birth moment.
Many rectification techniques are based
on important events timed by solar arc
directions, progressions, and transits.1 All
these techniques require a list of
important events and labored effort. Other
techniques are based on characteristics of
the native, which may be changeable and
need high skills for discernment.2
native have many drawbacks and are very
time-consuming, I propose a conversation-oriented rectification based on soul
purpose.
house system, Mean Node, and
transneptunian planets.7 However all other
astronomical and astrological factors can
also be included in the future.
During the process the astrologer will ask
the client a series of questions and the
client has to select the choice from meanings of adjacent signs, houses, decanates,5 dwads,6 or smaller divisions of zodiacal signs, which are most fitted to his or
her soul purpose. With a series of questions of fast-moving astrological factors,
midpoints or sensitive points can be
narrowed down to a small orb. As soon as
the possible positions of a fast-moving
factor such as Midheaven, Ascendant, and
Part of Fortune and so on is limited to about
15 minutes of arc, the birth moment can be
specified precisely to one minute in time.
Since the Midheaven (also known as the
Meridian) represents the soul purpose or
true nature of the native, the Equal House
System (based on the Midheaven degree)
proposed by the Astrological Lodge of
the Theosophical Society of London in
1952 plays an important role in rectification. In this system, the Midheaven degree begins the 10th house, and the other
cusps are derived by adding multiples of
30° to the Midheaven degree.
Within the framework of the research
project of the Uranian Astrologers Club,
Thailand (UACT), thousands of
horoscopes were rectified based on the
native’s soul purpose together with
Midheaven Equal house cusps and
zodiacal divisions. With the proposed
technique a rectified birth moment can be
obtained as accurately as one minute in
time within a duration of 10-15 minutes.
The effectiveness of the proposed
technique can be illustrated with two
examples.
Drawbacks of rectification based on events
will also be discussed. After that a rectification process is proposed. This technique
will be generalized so that the birth moment
can most likely be rectified to about one
minute in time.
Rectification of a Natal Chart
Rectification Based on Events
According to Leslie-Fleming-Mitchell
For the rectification of the birth moment
based on events, astrologers may encounter
many problems:
• the clients usually cannot remember the
exact date of the events and may require
some time to collect the data;
• the astrologers have to adjust the birth
moment several times and finally may have
to take the average to fit many events; and
• the reference of the tropical zodiac at
birth and the occurrence time of the events
are different, etc.
The birth moment in astrology may be
considered as the first independent
breath of the child. At that moment, the
child stops receiving the mother’s blood
and her electrical energy, and must begin to condition its own blood and respond independently to the cosmic vibrations present in the Earth’s magnetic
field.3
This definition of the birth moment has
agreed very well with the birth moment as
recorded since 1962 in birth certificates in
Thailand, which are recorded as soon as
the obstetrician cuts the umbilical cord
between the umbilical clamps as soon as
the stop of the pulse of the cord.4 Since
rectifications based on events and
appearances or characteristics of the
Therefore the rectification is quite a tedious
job for astrologers.
Proposed Rectification Technique
A rectification technique based on soul
purpose has been developed based on the
tropical zodiac, the Midheaven Equal
The 12 house cusps on the 360° movable
dial invented by Alfred Witte has proven
to be a powerful tool for adjustments of
the birth moment. Since there are 22
astrological factors applied in the standard
Uranian system, with the 12 house cusps
it is most likely that at the true birth
moment, we can narrow down the Meridian and the corresponding house cusps to
a small arc when utilizing the positions of
all factors in the horoscope.
The main technique used is to review the
meaning of factors in two adjacent
houses, and then determine which
position best applies to the individual.
Then the rectified birth moment can be
tested for the most dominant, or principal
planets. According to Jackie Slevin, the
principal planet is defined as the planet
nearest to the degree of the Midheaven in
a Ptolemic aspect within signs.8 However
within the framework of the research
project of UACT, we can apply several
principal planets and non-Ptolemic
aspects as well as transneptunian planets.
Since the rectification is based on soul
purpose, the astrologer can ask the client
to select the house best suited for each
astrological factor based on his soul
purpose, instead of the events. Based on
the rectification of over 1000 cases, the
F
page 10
Midheaven Equal House System seems to
be more suitable to serve this purpose
than the Meridian House System, which is
most used in Uranian Astrology. This
technique has several advantages over
other techniques:
• the process can be carried out within
just 10-15 minutes in time; and
• the astrologer can move the 360° dial to
obtain the true position of the Meridian
without any lengthy calculations, then
simple arithmetic is required only at the
last step i.e. around four minutes in time
for one degree of arc for the Meridian. etc.
Proposed Rectification Technique
To generalize the proposed rectification
technique based on soul purpose as described above, the use of zodiacal divisions
may be applied e.g. signs, decanates and
dwads9, degrees10 etc. In the case that the
uncertain period of birth spans a longer
time frame, or the true Midheaven may be
found within a larger degree span, the
following factors may also be used:
• Jupiter in signs to locate the birth
year;
• Sun in signs to locate the birth month;
• Moon in decanates to locate the birth
day;
• Meridian or Ascendant in decanates
to locate the birth hour;
Factors of fast motion including Meridian/
Ascendant/Part of Fortune (Ascendant+
Moon-Sun) /Perch Point (Meridian+Sun
+Poseidon) in decanates/dwads/ degrees
or smaller zodiacal divisions may be used
to achieve the rectified birth moment upon
the required accuracy e.g. within one
minute in time or within seconds in time.11
Examples
In this section two examples will be given
to show the effectiveness of the proposed
technique. Please note that there is no
specific order in the rectification process
and no requirement to use all the tools
available e.g. house cusps, zodiacal
divisions, astrological factors, and
dominant planets as well as principal
planets. The astrologer has to select the
tools properly to obtain the actual birth
moment as soon as possible. All astrological factors were obtained with the software developed by the author. Full precision formulas were used. Maximum discrepancies were seconds of arc for all astro-

approximately four minutes in time

Example 1. Fig. 1 shows the urectified

10° Aquarius 00’30” is very close to the
boundary between the 1st decanate of
Aquarius, which is Aquarius, and the 2nd
decanate of Aquarius, which is Gemini, the
next air sign. He confirmed that his true
nature, represented by the Midheaven, was
a pure Aquarian with no influence of Gemini
at all. Therefore his birth time could not be
later and should be at least one minute of
time earlier (More precisely two seconds in
time earlier). Therefore the actual Meridian

chart. Based on information available, the
actual birth time could be 10 minutes later
or earlier i.e. the true Meridian could be
shifted forward or backward within 2° 30’
of arc. When the focus point of the 360°
dial is placed on the unrectified Midheaven (10° Aquarius 0’30”), we can see
that Mercury (10° Capricorn 10’42”),
Moon (8° Aries 50’43”) and Kronos (8°
Gemini 29’00”) are very close to the 9th,
12th, and 2nd, house cusps of the MC
Equal House system, respectively. He
confirmed that his thought (Mercury) was
strongly related to the 9th house, and his
mother (Moon) preferred exposure to
society (11th house).
This conclusion automatically indicated
that Kronos should be in the 1st house.
Therefore the true Meridian should fall
somewhere between the longitudes of
Moon and Mercury i.e. 8°50’43”-10°10’42”
Aquarius. Therefore his actual birth time
could not be later any minute in time (more
precisely could be at most 42.8 seconds in
time later for 10’12”) and could be earlier
Up to this stage we might apply the
meanings of degree symbols such as
Sabian Symbols to confirm the possible
positions of Meridian and Ascendant. He
confirmed that his true nature (Meridian)
was A popularity that proves ephemeral,
which corresponds to the Sabian symbol
for 10° Aquarius. Therefore the actual
Meridian should lie within 9°01’00”9°59’59” and his actual birth time could
be four minutes in time earlier at most only
i.e. his birth time should be 13:36-13:39.
He also confirmed that the way he
F
page 11
presented himself to the world (Ascendant) was A symbolical battle between
swords and torches, which corresponded
to the Sabian symbol of 17° Taurus. This
concluded that his actual birth time could
be at most three minutes in time earlier, so
that his birth time should be 13:37-13:39.
Furthermore we can confirm the degree of
his sensitive point of personality
(Meridian+Sun+Poseidon). He confirmed
that his personality observed by the
others was A barn dance, which corresponded to the Sabian symbol of 22°
Gemini. This concluded that his actual
birth time should be two minutes in time
earlier at least, so that his birth time
should be 13:37-13:38.
Since Mercury and Moon are very close
to exactitude of the semi-sextile and
sextile, respectively, we can apply the
concept of the principal planet. He
confirmed that he usually used his
thoughts (Mercury) as the most important
tool for his life’s goals. Therefore his true
birth time should bring the position of
Mercury closer to the exactitude of semisextile than that for the Moon’s exactitude
to sextile. This concluded the rectification
process and the actual birth time should
be 13:38.
Fig. 2. Rectified Horoscope and Dominant Planets for Example 1.
The rectified natal chart and dominant
planets are shown in Fig. 2 (see right).
Please observe that, for the rectified
horoscope, Mercury is 39’47” from the
exactitude of semi-sextile and Moon is
41’12” from the exactitude of sextile. And
the most dominant factor in his natal chart
was Mean Node. The confirmation that
the turning points in his life and his
profession was mainly related to connections (Mean Node) ended the process of
rectification.
Example 2. Fig. 3 (see right) shows the
unrectified chart. Based on information
available, the actual birth time could be 10
minutes later or earlier i.e. the true
Meridian could be shifted forward or
backward within 2°30’ of arc (11° Taurus
38”-16° Taurus 11’38”). Based on this
information the actual Meridian should lie
within the second decanate (10°-19°59’)
only, which is Capricorn, the next earth
sign from Taurus, which is the Midheaven
sign. Therefore, we can look to the dwads
which are 2 1/2° each. The possible

position of Meridian could be in 1st 10°12°29’), 2nd (12°30’-14°59’), or 3rd dwad
15°−17°29) of the second decanate. She
confirmed that her true nature (Meridian)
was Taurus, plus Virgo (the 2nd decanate),
plus Scorpio (3rd dwad in 2nd decanate).
Thus her actual Meridian should lie
between 15°-16°11’38”. With the Sabian
symbols she confirmed that her true
nature (Meridian) was An old man attempting vainly to reveal the mysteries,
which corresponds to the Sabian symbol
of 16° Taurus. Therefore the actual
Meridian should lie within

Fig. 4. Dominant Planets of the Rectified Horoscope for Example 2
15°01’00”- 15°59’59” and her actual birth
time could be 6-9 minutes in time later only
i.e. her birth time should be 23:51-23:54.
She also confirmed that the way she
presented herself to the world
(Ascendant) was A pageant, which
corresponded to the Sabian symbol of 15°
Leo. This concluded that her actual birth
time could be four-eight minutes of time
later. Based on the information about
Meridian and Ascen-dant her birth time
should be 23:51-23:53.
The rectified natal chart and dominant
planets are shown in Fig. 4. Please
observe that, for the rectified horoscope,
Apollon is 1°21’46” from the exactitude of
biquintile and Uranus is 1°35’22” from the
exactitude of opposition. The most dominant factor in her rectified natal chart was
Uranus. The confirmation that the turning
points in her life and her profession were
mainly related to unexpected events
(Uranus) concluded the process of
rectification.
Furthermore she also confirmed that her
personality observed by the others
(Meridian+Sun+Poseidon) was A modern
Pocahontas, which corresponds to the
Sabian symbol of 28° Cancer. This again
concluded that her actual birth time
should be 23:51-23:53. Within this
possible range of the actual birth time,
Apollon and Uranus are very close to
exactitude of biquintile and opposition,
respectively. She confirmed that she
usually used her knowledge and
experiences (Apollon) as the most
important tool for her life goals.
(Charts used in this article are courtesy
of PlaPlace Software by "Srikanya.”)
Therefore her true birth time should bring
the position of Apollon closer to the
exactitude of biquintile than that for the
Uranus’ exactitude to opposition. This
concluded the rectification process and
the actual birth time should be 23:51.

There are four main phases of the fixed
stars. The first and strongest is the
heliacal rise. This can be calculated for
when the star rises invisibly with the
Sun—called the true cosmic rising—or for
when the star is visible in the sky just
before sunrise—the apparent heliacal
rise. Each phase occurs once a year. The
heliacal setting, on the other hand, occurs
when the star sets at sunrise.

is in Aquarius, ruled by its traditional
ruler Saturn, in rather indifferent T-State
being cadent, whose only aspects are
with the malefics.
Both natal Jupiter and Venus are in phase
change, modifying their qualities’
manifestation. Jupiter still invisible under
the beams is strengthened because it is
rising before the Sun, while Venus is
fading in the morning sky as it changes
from Lucifer (morning star and rising
before the Sun) to Hesperus (evening star
and rising after the Sun), entering a
period of absence from the sky for more
than a month. Any phase change by
Venus reinforces a critical movement in
our nation’s fate. Venus had a phase
change during the national elections on
November 2010, going from evening to
morning star.
On December 2, just before the first of the
three 2010-2011 United States Saturn
Return charts, Venus entered the first
gate conjoining visually for the first time
since its heliacal rise with the crescent of
the old Moon in the sky. Cayelin Castell‘s
article in the Shamanic Astrology
newsletter (www.shamanicastrology.org)
cites this date and analyzes it from a natal
and esoteric perspective. For mundane
purposes, it should be noted as the first
of a seven-fold stage that forms a ‘minicycle’ within the two larger Venusian
cycles and monitored for events to see if
Saturn Return. March 22, 2011.
Saturn Return.
December 3, 2010.
Saturn is retrograde, making a phase
change, and opposing Jupiter. This
forming configuration in the second return
chart is the third in the series of JupiterSaturn oppositions, which began on May
23, 2010 in Pisces-Virgo, recurred August
16, 2010 in Aries-Libra with Jupiter
retrograde, and ends on March 29, 2011,
with Saturn retrograde. Jupiter although
dignified by being the Trigon ruler of fire
by night is now dying or sinking into the
Sun, heliacally setting and thus making a
phase change, whereby its action as a
benefic is weakened while ‘opposed’ by
Saturn, which itself is making a phase
change, approaching its Acronychal rise.
(See left for chart.) In
the first chart of the
Saturn Return series of
2010-2011 (the 8th U.S.
Saturn), Mars at 26°
Sagittarius 49’ conjoins
the Galactic Center at 27° Sagittarius 0’.
The Sun has just transited the celestial
longitude of fixed star Antares, and is
about to cross the natal Ascendant
toward transiting Mars in a ‘fortunate’
house, the 9th, which is also in a superior
square to the Jupiter-Uranus conjunction.
Jupiter, although dignified in its ruler
Pisces, is in an unfortunate house, the
12th, and so it does not prosper in its
actions although it may mitigate disaster.

there is a recognizable
pattern of manifestation.
The Moon too should
be watched through its
seven-phase cycles.
Finally it should be kept
in mind that Venus as a
morning star was
considered more warlike
by Mayan as well as
Mesopotamian cultures
and had a recognizable
dual nature to other
cultures as well.
As this was being written, the Senate was
deciding the fate of millions of
unemployed whose interests are being
weighed against the continuation of tax
breaks for the very wealthy. As this is
being edited on December 21, 2010, the tax
breaks for the rich were extended for two
years but the unemployed received only
an additional 13 months of benefits!
The Scorpio Moon of the first return chart
is close to the setting degree of the fixed
star Zuben El Genubi, the Southern Scale,
which gives a mixture of Mars and Saturn
according to Ebertin, and which is part of
the Nakshatra Vishakha, whose image is a
gate. Ascendant-ruler Mars squares
Jupiter, and as the traditional ruler of
Scorpio, it disposits the Moon and Venus.
Saturn is in the 7th whole sign house of
open enemies. Finally, Pluto in Capricorn
begins its transit of opposition to the United
States’ natal Cancerian planets. This chart
promises conflict and misfortune.
(See chart on p. 16.) The second return
on March 22, 2011 occurred just after the
Vernal Equinox on March 20, 2011.
Because the Ascendant degree falls in the
last degrees of Virgo, we can consider
Saturn and Libra to be angular. But often,
should the majority of the portions mark
the hour, then the post-ascensional image
will lend itself jointly to the conduct of
advantageous business with the HourMarker (Robert Schmidt, The Astrological
Record of the Early Sages, Definitions and
Foundations, p. 50).
Jupiter is the bound ruler of both its own
position and Saturn’s as well as
dispositing Aries’ ruler Mars, which in
turn disposits Jupiter and, in its own
bounds, is transiting Pisces. Transiting
Mars, a malefic squaring its natal position
(in an unfortunate T-state in the Porphyry
6th house), suggests further cuts on jobs
and further bad news about the economy.
In some ways this resembles a tug of war
between impulses, the expansive one and
the conservative one with a possibility of
Martial violence. (As we go to press, this
prediction panned out with the bombing
of Libya in March, 2011.)
Mars enters Aries on April 2, 2011 and will
be in communion/metoché, acting jointly
with the Sun until it enters Taurus on April
20. On April 18, Mars will square Saturn.
The polarized forces of the second return
are the stalemate before the storm. It
should be noted that Jupiter makes an
approaching square to the natal Cancer
planets as is transit Mercury to natal
Mercury! Uranus has just made a phase
change and entered Aries as well, and

with the stelllium in Aries, and Mars in the 7th house, war
will be a topic during this time.
Finally, Venus is close to the Celestial Longitude of 23°
Aquarius 42’ of the fixed star Deneb Algedi, the Lawgiver.
Neptune transited this star on February 5, 2009, and it
would be wise to look at what has happened to the rule of
law since then, and speculate on what this transit will hold
in store since Neptune has recently transited the United
States natal Moon at 27° Aquarius 10’.
Saturn Return. August 28, 2011.
The third Saturn Return has Saturn in the 3rd house, which
by opposition to the 9th, also alludes to authority and the
government (Eduardo Gramaglia, Astrologia Hermetica,
“Topoi: El Sistema De Casas Hellenistico,” p. 147).

Cancer and in bad T-State in the 12th, just
finishing its transit of the United States natal
Sun, makes an approaching square with
Saturn, which strikes backwards with its
own ray.
all Mercurial matters. The Leo MoonMercury conjunction of the final return,
suggesting an autocratic control of the
popular voice is approaching opposition
to the natal national Moon which is still
within orb of conjunction by transiting
Neptune.
Meanwhile transiting Uranus and Pluto are
squared, and both make hard aspects to the
United States’ natal benefics, Jupiter and
Venus. The 9th whole sign house placement
of Uranus suggests that everything signified by that house will be in upheaval. DeVore assigns the 9th house to the Secretary
of State and the educated classes—those
who control or govern the reading, writing
or traveling habits of the public (Nicholas
Devore, Encyclopedia of Astrology, Philosophical Library, 1947, p. 217).
The events immediately following the first
Saturn Return give ample evidence of a
greater concentration of wealth for the
already wealthy, a continuing diminishment of the freedom and generous
economics that once made the United
States the envy of the world and an
increasing and accelerating decline of its
national and economic position along with
ongoing increase in hardships for the
common population.
It should be noted that Mercury and the
Moon in the 1st house are adverse to the
Sun and Venus, which is making its phase
change from morning to evening star in
Virgo in the whole sign 2nd, bracketing
between them the fixed star Zosma,
Victims, which rises at 6° Virgo, and
Alphard, connected with poison by
Ebertin, which rises at 5° Virgo, close to
the Sun of this chart. Mercury in the U.S.
natal chart is in opposition to Pluto,
giving an initial difficult and disintegrating
condition for our national discourse and
By the Equinox we may see war, and by
August, violence in the streets. With
Jupiter and Uranus changing signs from
the water to fire element, the weather
should change from flooding to drought
and wildfires. The Jupiter square and the
Mars transit of Cancer may cause crop
failure and large rises in the price of food.
The transiting Neptune to the U.S. Natal
Moon combinations indicate a continuing
of legal distortion and the Mercury
transits could foretell a media aided classwar or even shooting war given the 7th
house Mars and the Aries stellium in the
March chart.
Note: Daniel Giamario, Bernadette Brady,
and Diana Rosenberg have been germane
in re-introducing concepts used in this
article. The series of Moon/Venus ‘Gates’
connected to the Inanna legend is employed by Giamario’s school of Shamanic
Astrology. Brady’s Starlight Program has
been used for all calculations of astronomical and visual data included in the chart
analysis. Finally, I am especially indebted
to Project Hindsight for the translations of
Ptolemy’s work on phases as well as other
works on fixed stars by Vivian Robson
and Ebertin-Hoffman, Hellenistic techniques, and philosophical concepts.
(This article refers both to the Porphyry
house system as well as to the whole sign
house system, the latter of which is
always noted in the article.).

Chapter of NCGR. She was Education Chair and President for many years, and he sat

OANNA SHANNON AND JULIAN ARMISTEAD WERE GREAT FORCES
To honor the memory of their service to the community and their contribution to
astrological education, as well as to encourage education and service from up and
coming astrologers, their estates are creating a scholarship in their names. Once a
year, $1000 will be awarded to an astrologer or student who is a member of NCGR and
in the process of becoming certified by NCGR-PAA.
The requirement is simply to write an essay of no more than 2000 words, including
your credentials, your experience in astrological education and service to the astrological community thus far, your aims in your work with astrology, and how the scholarship would help you in your study of astrology.
The scholarship can be used for anything that will facilitate the winner’s study, i.e.,
books, computer software, classes, conferences, etc. That will be at the winner’s discretion.
Finally, at the end of the year, the winner should submit a brief essay evaluating his or
her experience of that year’s study and service.
Submissions should be made to John Marchesella in a Word document via email to
[email protected] by June 30, 2011, and he, in turn, will submit the candidates
to the NCGR Board. The winner will be selected by the NCGR Board and announced in
the September-October memberletter.
John Marchesella
Rodney Smith delivered a presentation
comparing Chinese to Western astrology
using the chart of Jackie Chan. Phil and
Sandy Meade presented Vedic Yantras and
their western counterparts, describing the
common ground between the sacred
symbolism from both cultures. Nancy
Emmert discussed a recently formulated
fusion of I-Ching, astrology, and the
chakral energy system called Human
Design. All presentations were wellreceived and displayed the diversity of
talent in our local community.

Astrology Day was held on Friday, March
18, 2011, at the Source of Life Center. The
theme for the evening was Saturn, Uranus,
Neptune, and Pluto from four different
generational perspectives. There were
four panelists: Shirley Soffer, Joseph
Carasso, Tracy Allen, and Kirk Kahn.
The theme for Astrology Day was Pat
Morimondo's Focus Groups. John
Marchesella introduced how the focus
groups got started many years ago and
that our panelists would discuss the
findings from the focus groups but add
their own understanding of these planetary energies from the perspective of
their particular generations. Shirley Soffer
spoke on Saturn, Joe Carasso on the
Uranus square Neptune generation, Tracy
Allen discussed Neptune aspects and
Neptune in Scorpio, and Kirk Kahn
discussed Pluto aspects from the Pluto in
Scorpio perspective of his generation. It
was a good turnout and there was a Q&A
between panelists and audience.

(We received this note from Terumi

Chair John Marchesella’s note to her
expressing NCGR’s concern. Our
thoughts and prayers continue to be with
the people of Japan-Ed.)
T
for your warm
concern. We cannot to get an overall
picture of the damage of this enormous
disaster, now. It would take time to grasp
the full extent of the damage. At present,
we can only know that some thousands
lives were lost and several cities were
almost totally devastated by Tsunami.
Perhaps, the number of the dead seems to
be more than ten thousands. Some of our
chapter members live in the disasterstricken area, but it is difficult to gain the
information how they are doing at this
point. Over 300,000 people are taking
refuge in evacuation sites. I hope they are
safe. The damage of Tokyo area by this
earthquake was slight, but the lifeline
system are limited because of the damage of
power plants. In Urayasu, suburb of Tokyo,
where I live, the water supply
and municipal gas supply are
cut off right now. The
suspension of power supply
will continue systematically
in several weeks in our Kanto
area (East part of Japan).
HANK YOU VERY MUCH
High standards prevail! There will be a
bulletin board for posting announcements. Bring your friends, your family—
everyone is welcome! Remember to bring
a chair or blanket for sitting, if possible.
This is a family picnic and children are
welcome but please bring toys or games
that will entertain and satisfy a small
child's restless energies. Badminton is
available for adults. For more information, contact Lynn at 301-589-2074,

many years, it's a great way to fill in the
gaps and delve deeper into a particular
branch of astrology that you may have
bypassed along the way. If you're that
middle-range student practitioner,
perhaps doing some readings here and
there for friends and relatives, it's a great
way to consolidate what you know and
give yourself the confidence to go
further in your astrological development.

Planetary Strength: A Commentary on
Morinus, by Bob Makransky, The Wessex
Astrologer Ltd., www.wessexastrologer.
com, 2010. Paper. 119 pp. £11.99 Br.
B
ob Makransky describes this book as
a commentary on Morinus, although
he also comments on the methodology of
Marc Edmund Jones. Regardless of
whether you’re a traditional astrologer or a
modern one (and I would mention that
Makransky DOES discuss Uranus,
Neptune, and Pluto), you’ll find this book
an absolute goldmine of information.
Makransky discusses planetary strength
in relation to essential dignities (which he
doesn’t apply to the modern planets),
retrogrades and stations, synodic cycles,
conjunctions with fixed stars, angular and
cadent house placements, and more.
except that he lived in Guatemala at one
time and also that he does a magical
almanac that is quite useful. He is very
clearly a very knowledgeable astrologer
and a good writer, who combines both
clarity and good humor.
What else can I say? As far as I’m
concerned, if you interpret natal charts, or
if you intend to interpret natal charts, this
book is an absolute must-have. If you’ve
made it beyond the first dozen weeks of
your studies, buy it now. This is a book
you’ll enjoy reading, and will learn from
and will no doubt refer to often. Price-y?
Yes for those of this side of the pond, it is
a bit. But you could probably spend twice
as much on books with half the
information.
Just buy it. You won’t be sorry!
Material is for the most part presented
cookbook-style, along with some
explanatory commentary from Makransky.
Interpretations are succinct, pithy, and for
the most part, spot-on. While it is not
mentioned in the book, I think some of this
material may have appeared as articles in
Considerations many years back. Again,
no matter. It’s all worth a reread and it’s
good to have it all in the same place.
There is an index and a glossary but no
bibliography. The only chart in the book is
that of Morinus, and while it doesn’t
mention house system I have a sneaking
suspicion that this would be Morinus
houses.
The appendix on the methodology of Marc
Edmund Jones covers preponderance and
absence and is very brief. I would have
liked to see it fleshed out and perhaps
contrasted and synthesized with the
Morinus material in greater detail,
however, the material presented is, as is
everything else in this book, useful.
I would have also liked a bit more
information about Makransky himself. I
have, as I say, encountered his work
before, but I know very little about him
The Future in the Stars: The Astrological
Message for 2012 and Beyond, by Alison
Chester-Lambert, Findhorn Press, www.

$16.95 U.S./£9.99 Br.
T
his is a book about Pluto and the
dwarfs—Ceres, Charon, Makemake,
Haumea, Eris, and Sedna. It is also a book
about the astronomy of the discovery of
the dwarf planets and of Pluto’s demotion,
the mythology of the dwarfs, the spiritual
meaning of each, and how and why they
might be important in the 21st century.
There is also discussion of related
mythology, much of which has relevance
if you are interested in asteroids. For
example, there is information on Nyx and
Hydra, the Moons of Charon-Pluto; in
mythology, Nyx, the goddess of darkness,
was Charon’s mother. Her mother was
Chaos. And Hydra was the nine-headed
snake that guarded the entrance to the
underworld. Kind of a dark, gloomy
bunch, overall, though Nyx also gave
birth to Eros.
F
page 23
In terms of Eris, there is both the spiteful
energy of the bad Eris, and the good Eris
that is the part of the natural system of
justice that punishes perjurers and those
who attempt to take what doesn’t belong
to them. Likewise, each of the dwarfs are
discussed in terms of what their discovery
may mean in terms of earth changes—
Sedna and global warming, Haumea and
its tie-in with circadian rhythms, etc.—and
what they may mean in the grand scheme
of things in 2012 and beyond. And yes,
the Mayan prophecy and other 2012
prophecies are discussed, along with
sunspot activity and other interesting
phenomena.
Among other things, there’s a discussion
of the so-called Indigo Children coming
into their own. Frankly, I’m more
interested in the myths of the dwarfs than
the myths of the Indigo Children, but if
you feel otherwise, you’ll no doubt find
this section interesting. The overall
message of this chapter is that we need to
embrace change rather than fear it. There
are no charts or cookbook interpretations,
nor is there an index. There are, however,
extensive notes and reference listings for
each chapter and many evocative
illustrations.

Lorraine Welsh (1928-2011)
L
ORRAINE WELSH , FORMER NCGR
Journal Editor and Publications
Director, passed away on March 4,
2011. After celebrating her 80th birthday in
August 2008 with a party that was attended by many of her friends and astrological colleagues (including Ken Irving,
Madalyn Hillis-Dineen, Doug Dineen,
Alphee Lavoie, Priscilla Costello, Arlene
Nimark, Joyce Levine and myself), Lorraine
left Needham MA, her longtime home, and
moved to Brazil, where she lived until her
death with her friend Nely Borges and her
family, whom she adopted as her own.
Lorraine was born in Brooklyn NY but
moved to Needham MA as a teenager,
where she lived until her move to Brazil.
She received her B.A. in journalism from
Boston University and worked as Director
of Publications for the Boston Museum of
Science for more than 20 years. After her
husband Larry passed away in 1990,
followed by her retirement in 1991,
Lorraine was able to devote more time to
her passions which, in addition to writing,
included history and astrology.
Lorraine was active in the Needham
Historical Society, even serving as its
President, and she continued to write her
“Chronicles” column for the Needham
Times. She once told me that she loved
writing that column because it gave her a
chance to combine everyday observations
with tidbits about the history of Needham.
Lorraine devoted much of her time to
astrology, as well as her many interests.
Although Lorraine was extraordinarily
knowledgeable about astrology, having
subscribed to every magazine and journal,
as well as purchasing and reading almost
every astrology book that appeared (I
know since I saw her library), she never
wanted to do readings, and only lectured
at NCGR conferences, where she combined astrology and history.
Still her contribution to the astrological
community was enormous, and she served
NCGR and AFAN in a variety of capacities,
bringing her journalistic skills, exacting eye,
and moral compass to bear on her
board positions and the publications that she edited.
In an article that Madalyn HillisDineen wrote for the
memberletter in which she paid
tribute to Helen Huber, Mary
Downing, and Lorraine, who all
stepped down from the NCGR
Board at the same time, she
described Lorraine’s work for
NCGR.
Lorraine joined the NCGR
Boston Chapter in 1980, edited
their newsletter for 16 years,
and she served as Vice President. She
founded “The Astrologers’ Newsletter”
in Boston, which was once the news
organ for three groups: New England
Astrological Association, the Star
Rovers, and NCGR. When NCGR
became the only remaining group, they
retained the newsletter as their own.
Lorraine became a member of the
NCGR Advisory Board in 1993 and,
shortly thereafter, was named Editor of
the NCGR Journal. She was twice
elected a Director—in 1995 and in
1998. She edited the NCGR textbook,
“Essentials of Intermediate Astrology”
and wrote the lead article on transits.
She wrote the astrological style sheet
for NCGR Publications and compiled
an Index of the Publications in the
early 90s. Lorraine has lectured
frequently at NCGR lectures and
beautifully combines her astrological
knowledge with her love for history.
Lorraine’s love of asteroids led her to
become editor of the Asteroid SIG
newsletter, and she served two terms on
the AFAN Steering Committee (1998-2002)
as Newsletter Editor, transforming AFAN’s
quarterly newsletter into a 20-24 page
publication with feature articles and lots
of information. As Lorraine did on almost
all NCGR publications, she edited the
AFAN newsletter with her longtime friend
and partner in crime, Mary Downing, who
designed and produced what Lorraine
edited. Together, they were an unstoppable creative team. When Lorraine
stepped down from the AFAN and NCGR
Boards, she served actively on their
Advisory Boards.
For me, Lorraine was more than just a
colleague with whom I worked on the
NCGR Publications Committee and the
AFAN Steering Committee; she was my
mentor and my friend. When she first
approached me to become NCGR’s
memberletter Editor, I was reluctant since
while I proofread, edited, and even
authored articles and books, I had never
edited a newsletter before, which is a very
different mechanism.
Once I accepted the position, Lorraine
took me under her wing, and taught me the
editorial ropes, which meant adhering to
the style sheet that she created, and which
I use to this day. Lorraine was a consummate professional with an amazing work
ethic, and it did not matter to her whether
she was editing the newsletter for the
Museum of Science or for NCGR; it had to
be accurate and objective.
As Publications Director, she was always
available to me whenever I had a problem
or question, whether it had to do with

a writer. Lorraine was generous with her
time, and always encouraged me, as well
as other portential writers, to develop our
craft. She was a stickler for the facts, and
never hesitated to tell me to return articles
to writers so they could fact check and
conform their writing to the style sheet.
Lorraine taught me more about professionalism than most other people I have
worked with, and she has set the standards to which every NCGR Publications
Director should aspire.
Lorraine was tough but compassionate,
and she did not suffer fools lightly. She
was the first person to open her door to
others, but if you took advantage of her
kindness, or did not pull your own weight,
she had zero tolerance. There were times
when she bit off more than she could
chew, and was late with deadlines for
newsletters she edited, but when she delivered, it was always superbly done. I think
of her every time I produce an issue of
memberletter, and will miss her every day.
Lorraine taught me that politics do not
have to make a difference when it comes
to friendship or being able to work well
together, as long as your work ethic is
strong, and your heart is in the right place,
and Lorraine’s was.
Since she was a staunch Republican, and I
a staunch Democrat, I always steered clear
at first of political discussions, afraid that
our close relationship could be marred by
heavy disagreements. However, I soon
discovered that we agreed more than we
disagreed, where our work and our values
were concerned. We both believed in the
value of hard work, individual freedom,
and responsibility, and, most of all,
believed in the golden rule, simply treating
others the way you want to be treated.
you married?” And she said, “Of
course I am married.” I said, “Do you
have any kids?” She said, “No.”. So I
told her you got one now. I started
calling her mom. Not too long after
everybody started calling her mom.
Every time she called me and Carol
would answer the phone she would
say, “Is sonny there?”
In that same tribute that Madalyn wrote,
she also wrote this about Lorraine:
Lorraine Welsh taught me many things.
One that stands out is that you can be
an astrologer and a Republican too.
You could have knocked me over with
a feather when I made this realization.
Lorraine is one of the most interesting
women I know. She tells a story with
flair and delights readers of her New
England hometown newspaper column
with her whimsical musings about life
today and yesterday. Her reverence for
the past has led her to serve as
President of the Needham (MA)
Historical Society. Before she retired,
she worked as Publications Director
for Boston’s esteemed Museum of
Science. And, so, you can see that she
brought more than a spirit of
volunteerism and a willingness to
serve to her NCGR job; she brought
professional credentials as well.
Like me, she was born a New Yorker
but has learned to love Massachusetts
and its salty, sturdy inhabitants.
Fondly referred to as Mom by a
number of us on the Board, she is
someone one that I feel I can turn to
for unconditional acceptance and
love. In that sense, she really is like a
mother and the best kind of friend.
The fondest memories of those who knew
Lorraine went beyond her many skills and
talents, and had more to do with her humanity, sense of humor, generosity, and loyalty. When Lorraine was your friend, she
was your friend for life. Some people, including Madalyn Hillis-Dineen and Alphee
Lavoie, called her “Mom.” Alphee wrote
Lorraine was a survivor, having suffered
from diabetes and other chronic conditions for many years. She even cheated
death when she survived an aneurysm
and cardiac arrest in 1983. In addition to
her many friends and surrogate family in
Brazil (Nely’s grandaughter was named for
Lorraine), she is survived by her sister-inlaw, her nieces, and their families.
I met Lorraine about six months after I
lost my mother. She looked a lot like
my mom. I didn't know her from Adam.
I walked up to her and asked her, “Are

orraine Welsh passed away on
March 4, 2011. Lorraine spent her
last years of retirement living in
Brazil. Lorraine served the astrological
community tirelessly for many years. She
served on the NCGR National Board as its
Publications Director, was the Newsletter
Editor for the Boston Chapter.
I first met Lorraine somewhere around
1974 when I was President of the New
England Astrological Association
(NEAA). By profession Lorraine was a
journalist. Her day job was Publications
Director of the Boston Museum of
Science. As an NEAA member, Lorraine
soon took over the task of editing the
NEAA newsletter. At one point Lorraine
edited a combined newsletter for three
Boston astrological organizations—
NEAA, Star Rovers (the group Isabel
Hickey founded), and the Massachusetts
Bay NCGR Chapter. Ultimately, the
Massachusetts Bay Chapter morphed into
the Boston NCGR Chapter. Lorraine was
the Boston Chapter's first newsletter
editor and continued in that position even
after she became the Publications Director
for the National Board.
On a personal note, Lorraine and I were
friends for many years—enjoying dinners
and laughs. Lorraine served as a mentor
for many who wanted to improve their
writing and/or editing skills—and her help
was always offered with encouragement,
not criticism. Lorraine will be missed.
I invite any of you who would like to pay
tribute to Lorraine to email me at joycel@
joycelevine.com and we will put together a
tribute for memberletter and E-News.

Maurice McCann (1938-2011)
W
HEN I STARTED OUT IN ASTROLOGY in
the mid-80s, I was far too in awe of
astrologers like Maurice to try to talk to him.
He was already well known for his work and
an important figure behind the Astrological
Lodge. I can’t remember when things
changed, but I realized that they had when I
sat in his flat one afternoon drinking tea.
And when we sat in a café in Amsterdam
while he taught my children to eat crepes
swimming in chocolate sauce, there was no
doubt that we’d become friends.
We talked for hours, although I had to ban
him from phoning me too early in the morning. Maurice started the day at 5:00 AM
and I told him that there were only so many
times that I was prepared to discuss the void
of course Moon with him. Those conversations took place in a variety of venues—we
gossiped in Belgrade and sniggered
together in Atlanta.
Although I knew him as an astrologer, Maurice had started his career as a guitarist in
dance bands in Ireland. He also had a career
as an film extra—there was a great close up
of him in the dock with Anthony Hopkins
being sentenced to transportation in the TV
mini-series Great Expectations (1991) and
you can also see him playing in the band in
Victor Victoria (1982) as Julie Andrews and
Robert Preston take to the dance floor.
It was around 1972 when he discovered
astrology and it took over his life. Originally self taught, Maurice spent several
years drawing up horoscopes and doing
readings for friends. Finally, he decided
that he needed other astrologers around
him and began attending classes given by
Nick Campion. At that time, Nick was
teaching a different type of astrology each
night and when he was ill one night, he
asked Bernard Eccles to stand in and
teach horary. That’s when Maurice knew
that he was really hooked. From that moment on, horary was the only form of astrology that interested him. Natal astrology
involved too much conjecture and guesswork for his tastes but when it came to
horary, I was amazed—it was like look-ing
at a black and white television all your life
and then suddenly seeing it in colour.
In the mid-80s, there were only two
books available on horary—those
by Ivy Goldstein-Jacobsen and
Barbara Watters. Maurice was in the
bookshop the next day with a copy
of each in his hands. He was
determined to meet Derek Appleby,
then the expert in horary. It took
a while, but eventually Maurice
was introduced to him by Olivia
Barclay and they gradually became
firm friends. And it was after a reading
by Derek Appleby that Maurice
decided to quit music. Within three
days he turned his back on music and
never played the guitar again.
Maurice was part of the small group
of astrologers in the 1980s behind the
traditional revival. He spent hour after
hour, every day, testing the rules of
astrology. His fascination with astrology’s
history led him to gain a BA in the history
of propaganda in astrology during the
Civil War, and later to study for his MA in
Cultural Astronomy and Astrology at Bath
Spa University College. He was a regular
contributor to a wide variety of international astrological journals and his essays
appeared in several anthologies. He lectured in many countries, from Russia to
Canada and the USA and from Australia,
Germany, Norway and Denmark to Belgium, Italy and Yugoslavia as well as in the
UK, and, of course, his native Ireland.
Maurice was at various times, chairman of
the Astrological Lodge of London and its
treasurer as well as editor of Réalta, the
journal of the Irish Astrological Association.
Maurice was a great film buff, convinced
that Sophia Loren was the most beautiful
creature to have ever adorned this planet,
and an aficionado of the Sherlock Holmes
stories and the books of PG Wodehouse
and Charles Dickens—he spent many
hours trying to convince me that if I read
Dickens again I’d learn to appreciate him
more. That never happened. As an enthusiast of the Sister Fidelma mysteries, written
by his friend Peter Berresford-Ellis (under
the name of Peter Tremayne), Maurice
became a founder member of the Sister
Fidelma Society, based in Charleston, South
Carolina, and wrote several articles for the
society’s journal The Brehon.
As well as being an astrologer, Maurice was
a firm advocate of the reunification of his
birth country. From 1989 to 1991 he was
treasurer of The London Association for
Celtic Education. In his later years he
revived his studies of the Irish language and
the last books he asked for in hospital were
Irish books, his dictionary and grammar.
Maurice had been ill for a number of years
before his passing. In 2008, I invited him to
lecture at the Astrological Lodge of
London’s History of Astrology Conference.
Until the last minute, it wasn’t certain he’d
be able to make it. Happily he did so, but it
was to be the last time he spoke in public.
Maurice was born on December 23, 1938,
1:20 AM in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and
left our world on the evening of February
18, 2011. He will be deeply missed. Very
deeply missed. A memorial was held
Saturday April 2, 2011.

Our bimonthly memberletter needs
articles of about 2000 words that range from
current events to interpreting the horoscope of a famous person to illustrating a
technique. All astrological systems, techniques, and research results are welcome,
especially good chart profiles. We invite
all NCGR members to contribute articles,
and let us know which topics you want to
see covered in future issues. Please query

Short pieces, letters to the editor, and interesting facts are also welcome. If you are
