JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Title:
Machine Operator-Wood Chipper
Grade:

Reports to: Supervisor/Superintendent
1.
JOB PURPOSE
To provide the NRA with skilled operation of tractors, bush cutting equipment including
pruners, trimmers, mowers and chain saws on a regular basis.

Staff reporting to Job Holder – None
To provide manual support with tools to construction and maintenance activities.
Operates the wood chipper machine by the roadside landing to grind piles of
debris;
Communicates safe machine & debris movement activities;
Operates chipping machine in accordance with safe working procedures;
Checks for proper functioning of the equipment during operation and makes
necessary adjustments.
Performs preventative maintenance on equipment, including operation pre-check
and services equipment with proper fluids and lubricants.
Occasionally acts as a lead person instructing a small crew of workers in the
operation of assigned equipment.
Performs other duties as assigned or required including assisting in preparation for
hurricanes and debris clearance in the aftermath of such and other emergencies
and natural disasters.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION
The National Roads Authority is the Statutory Authority responsible for planning, design,
construction and maintenance of all Government roads, car parks and any other projects
that may be assigned. In this regard, the major responsibilities include planning, design,
budgeting, construction, maintenance and cost efficiency of these projects.

KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS
o Graduation from high school or possession of a General Educational Development
Certificate (GED) and four (4) years of experience in the operation of wood chipper
and/or heavy equipment.
o Considerable knowledge of the operation and maintenance requirements of the
Carlton 1790 Wood Chipper;
o Good knowledge of local traffic laws and regulations;
o Extensive knowledge in overhead power lines and safety of proper methods of
placement and or attachments of communication infrastructure in an aerial or
unground environment where bushes and shrubs need to be maintained or
removed;
o Ability to operate heavy truck and construction equipment skillfully and safely;
o Ability to understand and follow verbal instructions, read and follow written
instructions; ability to complete paperwork;
o Ability to perform heavy manual labour under any type of weather conditions;
o Ability to courteously and tactfully communicate with fellow workers, supervisors,
other members of the organization, and the public in giving and receiving
information.
o Qualified as Machine Operator.
o Must have a valid Group 4 driver’s license.

ASSIGNMENT AND PLANNING OF WORK
Superintendent or Supervisor assigns daily duties.

SUPERVISION OF OTHERS
Not required but is required to train staff to his level of competence.

OTHER WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
Works closely with other operators in carrying out daily tasks.

DECISION MAKING AUTHORITY AND CONTROLS
Reporting all incidents, accidents, breakdowns and faults to Superintendent or
Supervisor.

KEY FEATURES
Working at times in adverse weather and poor air quality conditions.
Protective clothing, equipment and uniform provided.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Working environment is primarily outdoors including during inclement weather. May be
exposed to the following: hazardous materials, animal waste/dead animals, flammable
liquids, cramped work areas, excessive dust, weather/temperature extremes, trench
excavations,
underground
gas/electric/petroleum
lines,
rough
terrains,
cutting/chipping/grinding, hazardous/toxic atmospheres, sewage, damp/wet surfaces,
animal bites, snake bites, insect bites, poisonous plants, overhead power lines, toxic
fumes/vapors/odors, confined spaces, compressed gases, high noise areas, oily
surfaces, water environments, refuse/garbage/litter; and may be subject to shift
irregularities, and to work overtime. Equipment enclosure required to protect from the
elements.
