Handout 3: Anatomy
Learning outcome 1 Assessment criteria 1.1.
Some of the main muscle groups involved in moving and positioning are:











Gluteus maximus
Quadriceps ( Rectus femoris, Vastus medialis, Vastus lateralis)
Hamstrings (Biceps femoris, Semi membranosis, Semi tendinosis)
Gastrocnemius
Latissimus dorsi
Trapezius
Biceps
Triceps
Deltoid
Pectoralis major
Abdominals (Rectus abdominus, external and internal obliques)
These are shown on the following diagrams.

Functions


Gluteus maximus: the large muscle in the each buttock which provides power
when extending (straightening) the hips.
Quadriceps: (Rectus femoris, Vastus medialis, Vastus lateralis): a large muscle
group on the front of the thigh which straightens the knee.









Hamstrings: (Biceps femoris, Semi membranosis, Semi tendinosis): a large
muscle group on the back of the thigh which bends the knee.
Gastrocnemius: the calf muscle which lifts the heel and straightens the ankle.
Latissimus dorsi: a large muscle on either side of the spine which supports the
spine and stabilises the shoulder joint.
Trapezius: muscles on the spine which also raise the shoulder girdle.
Biceps: this muscle bends the elbow.
Triceps: this muscle straightens the elbow.
Deltoid: forms the curve of the shoulder and lifts the arm out to the side.
Pectoralis major: one of the group of muscles on the front of the chest which
bring the arm in to the side.
Abdominals (Rectus abdominus, External and Internal obliques): support the
‘core’ of the body in interaction with the muscles in the back to give a stable
central point.
