RecallIndex.ThisindexisaCanadianversionofthewell-knownU.S.RecallIndex,whichStericycle
ExpertSOLUTIONS™hasreleasedannuallyforthepastfiveyears.TheindexoutlinesCanadianrecall
trendsandprovidesinsightsintothe2016Canadianrecallsintheconsumer,foodandbeverage,and
healthindustries.
TheinauguralCanadianindexhighlightshowtherapidpaceofinnovation,whichbringsmoreadvanced
productstomarketeachyear,hasincreasedtherateofrecalls.Technicalinnovationisalsoseenasa
contributingfactortohigherrecallvolumesinsomeareasduetotechnology’simprovedabilitytodetect
errorsand/orcontamination.
Theindexrevealsthatoverallproductrecallshavebeenonthedeclinesince2014.However,consumer
productrecallshaveincreasedsignificantlyin2016,withthehighestnumberofrecallsinthepastthree
years.Children’sproductsledasthelargestconsumerproductrecallcategory,thesecondtimethis
categoryhasledsince2014.
Thefoodandbeverageindustryhadexperiencedasharpdecreaseinrecallsinpreviousyears,though
hadaslightincreasein2016.Nearlyhalfofallfoodandbeveragerecallswereduetoallergens,witha
majoritystemmingfromeggsanddairy.Thesecondlargestcategoryoffoodandbeveragerecallsis
microbiological,duetonewhealthsafetytechnologiesthatmakedetectingbacteriaeasier.
Healthproductsexperiencedaslightdeclineinrecallsoverthepasttwoyears.Theleaderinthis
categorycontinuestobemedicaldevices,makingupover80percentofallhealthproductrecalls.Of
concernisthemoderateincreaseindrugrecalls(thesecondmostcommonhealthproductrecall).
“Asthe2016dataillustrates,theCanadianmarketisnotimmunetothetrendofmultinationalproduct
recalls,whichhaveimpactedmoreconsumersthaninpreviousyears,”saidAlexTamburini,Senior
NationalDirector,StericycleExpertSOLUTIONS.“Onaverage,one-thirdofallrecallsimpactboththeU.S.
andCanada,requiringmultinationalcompaniestodevelopaNorthAmericanstrategytomanagethe
situation.We’realsoseeingamoreheightenedsenseofresponsibilityfromsmall-tomid-sized
companiestopreventconsumerinjuryandminimizecommercialimpact.”
