RATIONAL

The Senior Project provides students with the opportunity to conduct an in-depth exploration of
personal interest and demonstrate skills necessary to meet the challenges for future employment.

This experience will focus on the K-12 education and showcase the skills and abilities expected
of a successful post-secondary student, employee, and/or citizen.

Successful completion of the Senior Project, including all cycle class assignments and portfolio
presentation, is a mandatory graduation requirement.
GUIDELINES

Choose a project that allows for development of either a physical project, a written product, a
performance task, a teaching or leadership experience, or a physical or career-related experience.

The project must involve the bettering or educating of society in some way and be a learning
stretch for the individual student.

The project cannot involve weapons (of any kind), hazardous or explosive materials, and/or
unsavory items such as pornography or vulgar language. “Hot Topics” should be avoided.

Projects must be approved by the student’s 4th Quartile Junior Cycle Class teacher and Senior
Project teachers. If you choose to make any changes to your Senior Project (after it has been
initially approved), you MUST get permission from your faculty advisor first and Senior Project
teachers.

The project must be the student’s original work (refer to JHS Student Handbook for definition of
and penalties for “plagiarism”).

The project should represent a significant amount of time, effort, and appropriate
difficulty. It should be something that involves student learning.

The project should be completed outside regular class and co-curricular activities. A project
produced for any student organization, including Boy/Girl Scouts and legally mandated
community service, will not fulfill the Senior Project requirements
REQUIREMENTS
1. PROJECT







Project may be a physical product, a written product, a performance, a teaching or leadership
experience, a physical experiment, or a career-related project.
Project must show a learning stretch, that takes the student beyond what he/she has ever done.
Project must be completed by student, NOT by mentor, parent, etc.
Project costs must be fundraised or donated by an unrelated source; students, parents/guardians,
etc. may not pay for necessary materials and/or resources.
Project development must be approved and monitored by a mentor and a work log of time put
into its completion must be maintained and verified by him/her.
All receipts must be kept and attached to Budget Form.
Written documentation for project donations must be received.
2. BINDER
 The binder is a physical record and documentation of the work completed. It will be on display
for the panel to review prior to the presentation. A complete binder will provide the panel with a
clear picture of the project’s workload and the student’s effort.
 The binder must contain all required documentation, neatly organized according to the checklist
within this handbook.
 The binder should express the student’s personal style. Although all required items must be
included, the student should include personal creativity, such as a decorative cover, an original
binding, and other personal touches. The final product should be something the student is proud
to present.
3. PRESENTATION
 The presentation should take 8-10 minutes, not including time for questions from the members of
the panel.
 The presentation will be judged on content and delivery using the rubric within this handbook.
 The presenter should dress in professional attire or attire that reflects the nature of the project.
 The presentation will include the Eportfolio developed in Portfolio Compilation, but the
incorporation of other visuals that highlight the project are encouraged, especially the project
itself if applicable.
 The presentation will be delivered to classmates and instructors during the fourth quartile in
preparation for the formal presentation that will occur in May to a panel of teachers, graduates,
community members, school board members, etc.
