Cobolt (Co) and chromium (Cr) induced adverse reactions to metal debris (ARMD) are common phenomena in metal-on-metal (MoM) hip arthroplasty. In this study we investigated the correlation of blood and synovial fluid inflammatory markers with macro- and microscopic findings in ARMD, patients’ symptoms, and synovial fluid and blood Co and Cr levels in a cohort of 196 MoM patients revised for ARMD at our institution. No significant correlation was found with any of the tested parameters. Over 90 % of the inflammatory markers were at normal range. In conclusion, inflammatory markers do not seem to have diagnostic value in evaluating the severity of ARMD. Instead, they are useful in differential diagnostics between prosthetic joint infection and ARMD.
