Educating families 3. Directing the media in the right way The article that I was focusing on for my research analysis essay presents a different variety of roles that family can play in order to set a mean for a good body Jung 3 image or help the young generation to fight obesity or depression. The first role that the article presents and in my opinion is pretty crucial for the correct growth of youth is the fact that family and parents in particular can help kids to fight obesity and depression. In fact representing the idea that if parents set a specific limited time for watching TV during the day is a brilliant idea. Kids can use their time to find other activities, involve in outdoor programs, play sport with their friends or make new friends. When friends and family start having a more profound meaning in the kid’s life, it all can result in better social skills, feeling of satisfaction and happiness and the lower rate of depression for the whole nation as a block. The other reason why family is an important foundation for setting the “ideal body image” is the influence and expectation that a husband in relationship can have on his wife. By using the example that women of specific financial level in 19th century was expected to have a short waist in order to find a husband on the same financial level as her, portrays the fact that the opinion of men about “the ideal body image” is the factor that would set ground rules and standards for women to follow even though in a lot of cases it would cause serious injuries for women to make their waists look smaller. Another example of the role of family in setting the standard can be the fact that during the colonial times, women was expected to be tough and strong as it was understood as means and features of survival. The fragile standard body of today would be a bad feature for a women of colonial times to have and that shows how the standards have shit from time to time and adapted to the ruling environment. The other major frame that is really active on setting a lot of standards for the image of women is media. Since the creation of the media broadcast, even though it is led by a specific group of people, it has been one of the major sources for women to copy Jung 4 and imitate. Young or old women perceive every influential representation of women in media in several different ways and that makes women to feel the necessity of following the trend in order to prevent being criticized by the public. That is one of the major causes for the high reported rate of women feeling unsatisfied with their own body. When the media is setting the ground rules of beauty on size zero, anyone outside of that safe zone will feel unsatisfied and that can cause serious mental injuries or depression. On the other hand, when the media creates an image, it advertises the routes to that image too. Advertising the variety of muscle builders and weight loss compounds are one of the examples for that. In fact I believe the media is creating a chain of business by misusing their power to set a hard trend and offering people the high price ways to that standard. Another communities that set the grounds for “ideal body image” are the influential and famous people. Individuals like Kate Moss, Jamie Lee Curtis, Pamela Sanderson or even Barbie Dolls are the factors that can seriously influence the body image of women as they have always done the same during the history. Some represent the healthy way to achieve the correct body image and some represent the wrong and unhealthy way of reaching to the “ideal image” and that is a frame that needs to be perceived in the right way by society. Now after all that we discussed about the influential venues that can affect the Standard body image, we need to figure out ways to fix the issue. As it was represented in the articles, enhancing the school programs to educate kids about the correct image can be really influential. In addition to that, families and media can be two important factors to help the community too. If parents start educating or at least talking to their kids about the correct ways and media display the right for of Jung 5 standard, society will automatically shift to understand the right form and wrong practices will be forgotten.
