POST-NATAL PILATES
What is Pilates?
Pilates is a method of exercise and physical movement designed primarily to stabilise the trunk (the
“core”), producing more effective strengthening, stretching and balancing of the body. During pilates a lot
of focus is placed on breathing correctly by expanding the rib cage sideways and avoiding abdominal
breathing. The general rule with breathing during exercising is to “exhale on the effort”.
After labour (depending if it was a caesarean section or a vaginal birth) the women’s abdominal and
pelvic muscles are stretched. The hormone “relaxin” is still excreted after birth and this causes ligament
laxity. It is thus very important to still be careful up to six months after delivery what exercises you do.
Exercises that have a jarring effect should be avoided as it can cause back injuries and incontinence
(controlling your bladder) problems.
Three weeks after a vaginal birth and six to eight weeks after a caesarean section the woman will be able
to exercise again. After pregnancy the variety and amount of exercises that can be done, increases. Postnatal classes are very successful, as the mother regains fitness, muscle strength and tone.
Post-Natal Pilates is an excellent way to revamp your body after a challenging pregnancy and labour.
