How is treatment conducted? A Behavioral Health Clinic (BHC) is an integrated speciality clinic that provides services to children, adolescents and their families for developmental, behavioral, emotional, social and academic issues. A BHC is a cooperative effort between your physician and the Psychology Department at the the University of Nebraska Medical Center’s MunroeMeyer Institute (MMI) in Omaha. Usually, both the child and parents attend all sessions. During the first session, parents are interviewed to determine the nature of the issue and a potential course of treatment. Additional sessions are usually scheduled weekly or every other week. The number of additional sessions depends on the nature and severity of the issue, but between five and 10 visits is common. Who operates the clinics? Will my health insurance cover it? Services at BHCs are provided by faculty, staff, and students from MMI who are specially trained in behavioral pediatric psychology. Clinical services are supervised by licensed psychologists. Services at a BHC are covered under the mental health portion of most insurance plans, including Medicaid. If you are not sure about coverage, contact your insurance carrier or the benefits office at your place of employment and ask about your coverage. Individuals seen at a BHC are registered as patients in the Munroe-Meyer Institute system, which is responsible for all billing and record management. What kind of issues or conditions are seen at MMI’s Behavioral Health Clinics? MMI’s Behavioral Health Clinics collaborate with your physician to provide comprehensive assessment and treatment for a wide range of issues at home and school, including: Academic and school behavior problems Adherence with medical treatment Anxiety and depression Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) Chronic pain • Migraine • Abdominal pain Developmental disabilities • Autism • Mental retardation Elimination problems • Enuresis (bed-wetting) • Encopresis (soiling) • Toilet training Fears and phobias Feeding problems Obsessions and compulsions Oppositional, defiant, aggressive and destructive behaviors Psychoeducational assessment and school consultation Sleep problems • Bedtime resistance • Night-time awakening • Sleep/wake schedule problems Tic and habit disorders "Our three-year-old daughter had no regard for her own safety, didn’t listen, wouldn’t follow instructions and thus had to be attended to at all times. The disruptive behaviors sent us into a spiraling frustration. The behavioral therapist with the Munroe-Meyer Institute was able to provide us with treatment options. It was an enormous relief that gave us the glimmer of hope we needed. The therapist, who practiced out of our pediatrician’s office, taught us how to communicate with our daughter. Once we implemented the tools she suggested, we could see changes in our daughter’s behavior almost immediately. It’s been life-changing. Our daughter is a happy little girl again." -mother of pediatric patient
