FUNCTIONS OF THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM
The circulatory system has seven major functions:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
To transport oxygen from the lungs to the
cells in the body and remove carbon
dioxide from the body’s cells and bring it
back to the lungs.
To contain antibodies and white blood cells
that fight off disease (immune system).
To transport nutrients (macromolecules) from the small
intestine to the body’s cells.
To transport hormones to their target organs.
To transport vitamins and minerals from the small and
large intestine to the body’s cells.
To distribute heat to all parts of the body to maintain
homeostasis (37°C).
To transport urea, uric acid and ammonia from the
body’s cells to the kidneys.
