Nutritional and metabolic regulation of ageing
Applications are requested for a PhD studentship in ‘Nutritional and metabolic regulation of cellular ageing’.
The key goals for this studentship are to identify important aspects of nutrition and metabolism that may control the
ageing process. Using established expertise from within ARCHA and Aston University the prospective student will
help to establish a cross-sectional observational study to elucidate links between nutrition, metabolism and ageing
and will add substantial new information to the field. This PhD studentship will investigate the role that nutritional
status and metabolism have in the regulation of biological (cellular) ageing. This will include performing nutritional
and body composition analysis of human subjects and obese/diabetic patients, and analysis of biomedical correlates
including telomere length, single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), genomic DNA methylation, ageing biomarkers
and basic blood biochemistry. Statistical analysis of the data gained to validate and quantify relationships will form
an important aspect of this study.
Eligible applicants must have, or expect to obtain, a good honours degree (first class or upper second) or hold an
MSc in a relevant discipline.
Eligible applicants must have the necessary English Language requirements: a minimum score of 620 (260 minimum
in computer test) in TOEFL OR IELTS with minimum marks of 6.5 in each section and an overall band of 7.0.
Interviews for shortlisted candidates will take place week commencing 28th February 2011.
(If you have not heard from us within six weeks of the closing date, please assume that on this occasion, your
application has been unsuccessful.)
Applications, comprising a full CV, a supporting letter stating your interest in the project and in ageing research more
generally, and a completed application form (downloadable from:
