Grades:
Formative Assessment-Formative assessment is generally carried out throughout a course
or project. Formative assessment is used to aid learning. In an educational setting, formative
assessment might be a teacher or peer, providing feedback on a student's work, and would
not necessarily be used for grading purposes.
Summative Assessment-Summative assessment is generally carried out at the end of a
course or project. In an educational setting, summative assessments are typically used to
assign students a course grade.

Keystone Exams:
The Keystone Exam is an end-of-course assessment, designed to assess proficiency in biology. The
Biology Keystone Exam is one portion of Pennsylvania’s new system of high school graduation
requirements, which will also be assessing students in algebra and English literature. The
Keystone Exam will be given in place of a final exam for this course.
Computers:
We will be using these on a fairly regular basis in this class, as even our class textbook will be
online. The expectation is that you will have your laptop with you EVERY day and that it will be
turned on when you arrive to class so that we don’t waste time waiting for computers to power on
during class time. Please make sure that your laptop is charged each evening so that it will
remain functional without a power source throughout the school day.
