DRAFT 08-01-16 Sherry Liu Marketing Manager Berkeley Humane [email protected] 510-845-7735 ext 228 Berkeley Animal Shelters Join Forces to Celebrate National Senior Citizens Day on Sunday, August 21, 2016 Senior citizens qualify for free adoptions at two Berkeley animal shelters. --FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE-(Berkeley, CA) August 10, 2016—Berkeley Humane (Berkeley-East Bay Humane Society) and Berkeley Animal Care Services (BACS) are teaming up to celebrate National Senior Citizens Day! Senior citizens can adopt senior pets for free at both Berkeley shelters on August 21st. “Research tells us that companion animals—such as cats and dogs—improve our physical and mental health,” said Berkeley Humane Executive Director Jeffrey Zerwekh. “Often the quiet home of a senior citizen is the perfect match for an older animal looking for a new home.” The special adoption campaign co-hosted by Berkeley Humane and BACS encourages senior members of the local community to adopt senior animals in need of loving homes. Both shelters hope that the campaign will help mature, harder-to-place animals find loving homes, while senior humans rediscover the joy of having a cat or dog in their lives. “There are so many benefits to bringing an older animal into your life,” said Amelia Funghi, BACS Shelter Manager. “Senior animals are often gentler, calmer, and often are already trained.” Berkeley Humane and BACS both offer year-round adoption programs where senior citizens can adopt senior pets at reduced rates, but in honor of National Senior Citizens Day, the two Berkeley shelters wanted to do something extra special by waiving 100% of adoption fees. Because the well-being of animals reflects the well-being of the community, Berkeley Humane engages minds, hearts and hands to provide care for dogs and cats throughout the East Bay region. As an independent, non-profit organization, Berkeley Humane intakes its animals from overpopulated municipal shelters and provide medical care before offering animals for adoption.
