o Detects low levels of calcium ions
in the blood & stimulates the
release of PTH - parathyroid
hormone.
o PTH raises the level of calcium
ions in 3 ways:
• Release calcium from the
bones by stimulation of the
bone-digesting osteoclasts
• Reabsorption of calcium in
the kidney tubules while
phosphate ion reabsorption
is inhibited
• Activation of vitamin D,
which then promotes
calcium absorption from the
intestine.
• The resulting increase in
calcium blood levels restores
homeostasis.
Why Do You Need a Thyroid Gland??
Thyroid hormones affect almost every cell in your
body! Part of their job is to regulate the speed your
cells function.
Example: Thyroid hormones regulate your heart rate and how
fast your intestines process food.
 If levels are low, your heart rate may be slower than
normal, and you may have constipation/weight gain.
 If levels are high, you may have a rapid heart rate and
diarrhea/weight loss.

Thyroid
The thyroid gland uses iodine to make two hormones:
1. Triiodothyronine (T3) which is the
most active thyroid hormone.
2. Thyroxine (T4) which is the most
prevalent thyroid hormone by 20
to 1 ratio.
3. Both T3 & T4 are tyrosine-based
hormones
4. Enzymes that break the iodine
bond made form selenium
release the forth iodine molecule
from T4
The pituitary gland releases TSH into the bloodstream which makes
the thyroid gland release thyroid hormones.
Thyroid Hormone RT3
 T4 is the primary hormone made by the thyroid gland but It
is biologically inactive.
 In order to create energy & do its job, it needs one of it’s
iodine atoms removed to become T3
 T4 is a storage hormone it stays in the body for several
weeks.
 T3 is only active for a few days
 Without enough T3, we experience lower energy & a lack of
desire to do pretty much anything.
 Reverse T3 (RT3) is made when enzymes take the wrong
iodine atom from T4
 RT3 blocks the receptor for T3
 It creates hypothyroid symptoms even with normal TSH, T3
& T4 blood work.
 Having some RT3 is perfectly normal, when levels get out of
control, we experience many unpleasant symptoms.

The body also has two
triangular adrenal glands, one
on top of each kidney.
The adrenal glands have two
parts, each of which produces a
set of hormones and has a
different function:
The outer part, the adrenal cortex, produces hormones called
corticosteroids that influence or regulate salt and water balance in
the body, the body's response to stress, inflammatory response,
metabolism, the immune system, and sexual development and
function.
The inner part, the adrenal medulla, produces catecholamines,
such as epinephrine, adrenaline & norepinephrine. Increases blood
pressure and heart rate when the body experiences stress.
