Job Description Practice Nurse
Overall Responsibility to: Senior Partner
Day to Day Reporting to: Practice Nurse Team Manager
Overview: The Practice Nurse cares for, advises and treats patients presenting with
nursing needs and assists the general practitioners where appropriate in accordance with
U.K.C.C guidelines:





SAFE PRACTICE – practice safe evidence-based clinical care, maintain good
professional conduct and recognise ethical considerations within provisions of the
law in the patients’ best interest.
TEAM MEMBER - work in collaboration and co-operation with all healthcare
professionals by supporting their particular contribution within the P.H.C.T.
COMMUNICATION – effectively communicate and disseminate information
between all team members.
CONFIDENTIALITY – protect all confidential information concerning patients.
TIME MANAGEMENT SKILLS – ability to self-motivate, organise and
manage duties to patients and practice, by efficient self-management of time.

Required to be a member of the Royal College of Nursing

Required to hold U.K.C.C registration

Required to be a Registered General Nurse
BAND 5 depending on experience and qualifications
The practice nurse is employed by the general practitioners (GP), unless otherwise
agreed, and is a member of the primary health care team. The Practice Nurse reports
directly to the Practice Nurse Team Manager. The Practice Nurse works as a team
member and is responsible for ensuring that all nursing care delivered to the practice
population is relevant, of a high standard and effective. The Practice Nurse has
involvement in policy development within the practice, providing the nursing input to
any decision-making processes affecting the care of patients. Tasks and duties identified
may vary in accordance with continued expansion of the practice nurse role.

General duties and responsibilities:
To provide assessment, screening and treatment services, to promote good health and
support a healthy lifestyle.
 Immunisation and injections – e.g travel, childhood, adolescents, flu, depotneuroleptics, B12, myocrisin.
 Implants – zoladex
 Minor illness – treating, advising and counselling patients in a nursing capacity,
as per the practices protocols, following appropriate training.
 Wound care – all aspects including leg ulcer care, minor injuries and routine care.
 Ear care – earache, foreign body, hearing difficulties and syringing, recognise
infection
 Eye care – red eye, infection, foreign body, visual acuity. – to refer to GP
 Dermatology – advice on skin conditions (eczema, psoriasis, acne, warts,
verrucas). Lesions, rashes, allergy.
 Routine screening procedures – blood pressure, weight, urinalysis, cervical
cytology.
 E.C.G
 Asthma care – use of nebuliser, PEFR readings and advise on inhaler technique.
Spirometry
 Diabetic care – dietary advice and use of glucometer.
 Family planning – provision of all services following practice protocols, with
appropriate training.
 New patient health checks.
 Health promotion and education – weight, diet, exercise and alcohol.
 Smoking cessation following practice protocol.
 Teenage health – educating teenagers formally and informally/discuss sexual
health issues
 Phlebotomy as necessary, following practice policy.
 Telephone enquiries – give first line advice or refer to GP as necessary.
 Assist or chaperone the GP during clinical procedures or minor surgery.
 Assist with patients requiring an Insurance Medical, as necessary.


Women’s health and sexual health:
 All aspects of family planning including preconceptual care, on fulfilment of F.P
Diploma.
 Post-natal health checks 6 weeks post–partum, on fulfilment of F.P Diploma.

Nurse required to be a member of the Health and Safety team and to be responsible for:
 Maintenance and safe use of all equipment and instruments
 Safe disposal of drugs and vaccines – monitoring fridge temperatures.
 Maintenance and ordering of stock items.
 Undertake the collection of pathological specimens as deemed appropriate by the
practice
Professional role development:
 The practice expects professional role development on an ongoing basis. The
practice nurse should recognise their educational needs and identify their training
requirements in line with practice objectives and personal appraisals. The
Practice Nurse is responsible for updating P.R.E.P records as required by N.M.C
 The practice nurse needs to keep abreast of N.H.S reforms and may be expected
to develop their role in accordance with changes.
 Review and update protocols. Following discussion with team, write new
protocols to cover new areas of work when extending the role.
Team Working:
 Through team discussion, identify opportunities for improvement of services,
assist in the formulation of practice philosophy, strategy and policy, negotiate and
agree the introduction of change and evaluate those changes.
 Participate formally and informally in the improvement of health care service in
the practice – in the field of patient care and staff morale.
 Assist in creating and maintaining the necessary conditions for productive work
activity within the team by support and encouragement.
 Liase with community nursing team to minimise gaps and overlaps in services to
patients.
 Negotiation within the nurse team to arrange hours, holiday cover and study
leave.
 Maintain staff welfare and create the necessary conditions for productive working
activities.

Information:
 Competent use of System One computer system for recording all patient
information.
Administration & Finance:
 Participate in the administrative and professional responsibilities of the practice
team.
 Attend and participate in all practice meetings as required.
 Adherence to the Practice absence reporting procedure
 Awareness of cost efficiency regarding dressings and drugs used in patient cares.
