SMALL CHANGES THAT ADD UP
• Instead of whole milk, drink 2%, then 1% and
eventually non-fat milk
•Do not Supersize meals at fast food places
•Choose fast foods lower in fat & calories
•Reduce the amount of soda you consume
•Increase the amount of fruits and vegetables
you consume

DENTAL DISEASE STATISTICS
• Dental disease is the most common chronic
disease. 5 times greater than asthma
• California has twice as much dental decay
compared to our national counterparts
• Half of all first graders already have a cavity
• 32% of low-income Californians over age 65 have
lost all of their natural teeth

• Brush your teeth and tongue
• Floss
• Use fluoride – toothpaste, mouthrinse,
water, supplements
• Limit snacking
• Don’t share toothbrushes, utensils,
cups, etc.
• Visit your dentist once a year.
• Have your teeth sealed
One Serving Equals
1 cup (8 oz) milk or yogurt
2 slices of cheese
2 eggs
1 whole medium fruit
1 medium tortilla
½ cup rice
½ cup 100% juice
1 slice of bread
½ cup nuts
1/2 cup canned fruit
1 cup cereal
½ cup pasta
Deck of cards size of meat – chicken, beef, fish
1.Determine the Serving Size
Ingredients: Enriched Flour
(Wheat Flour, Niacin, Reduced Iron,
Thiamine Mononitriate { Vitamin
B1}, Riboflavin {Vitamin B2},
Folic Acid), Partially Hydrogenated
Soybean Oil, Defatted Wheat Germ,
Sugar, Cornstarch, High Fructose
Corn Syrup, Corn Syrup, Salt
2.Note the # of calories you receive from one
serving & compare these to how much you
ACTUALLY eat.
3.Determine how many grams and calories from
fat and sugar you receive from one serving. Note
the amount of sodium also. Limit these Nutrients
* Too many of these calories are linked to poor
health and obesity.
4 grams = 1 teaspoon
4.Look at the amount of dietary fiber and the
amount of other nutrients you get from one
serving. The RDA % is listed for these nutrients.
These = the GOOD STUFF in food.
5.Guideline:
5% or less of RDA is Low
20% or more is High
6.Percent of Recommended Daily Allowances are
based on a 2,000 calorie diet.
