STANDARD PROTOCOL FOR ALL NURSING / MIDWIFERY
CLINICAL CARE

KEY POINTS
1. The nurse / midwife shall demonstrate competence in the provision of care as
specified by the registering authority’s licence to practice, educational
preparation, relevant legislation, standards and codes and the context of care.
2. All equipment required for the procedure shall be tested, functional and
assembled before preparing the patient.
3. The operator will know how to use all equipment safely before commencing any
care.
4. The procedure will be explained to the woman in the language and terms she
can understand.
5. Interpreter services shall be used on a 24 hour basis to facilitate communication
with women from non English speaking backgrounds. This is especially important
for obtaining consent. See WNHS policy WO37 Language Services
6. The woman shall be given physical and psychological privacy and comfort during
any care.
7. Staff will use precautions which prevent occupational injury at all times.
8. All blood and body substances will be regarded as infectious. Compliance with
standard infection control precautions is required when treating any patient
(regardless of status).
9. Medical ‘sharps’ will be deposited in designated containers immediately after
use.
10. Hand hygiene will be performed prior to and following any patient contact.
11. All trolleys will be cleaned prior to and following use.
12. All equipment will be disposed of appropriately.
13. Upon completion, all procedures will be documented in the patient’s notes and
other designated documents as required.
