A Scout is … @ Trustworthy @ Loyal @ Helpful @ Friendly @ Courteous @ Kind @ @ @ @ @ @ Obedient Cheerful Thrifty Brave Clean Reverent 7 Sharing Your Scouting Story @ In an effort to teach youth the values and ethics promoted in Scouting, the adult leader must know what these values and ethics are. @ Let’s discover them together: @ Think of your scouting story; @ How you became involved in scouting? @ Why you’re involved in scouting? @ What has scouting provided for you in your life? @ Be ready to share with a small group. @ You will have a maximum of 2 minutes to share. 8 Sharing Your Scouting Story @ Speaker: Share your story! @ Listener: Listen for the values and ethics that appear in your speaker’s story. Please record them on the 3x5 card to give to the speaker. @ Feedback is a gift! 9 Building Character, Morals, Ethics and instilling Values in Youth @ Scouting is an opportunity to allow youth to grow into adulthood. @ Each youth is an individual and moves at his/her own pace. @ Scouting provides the opportunity to learn from experience while the cost of making a mistake is still small. @ Boy Scouting enables development of the individual through the group. @ A Boy Scout is concerned with the individual and the group, the self and others, the troop and the community. 10 Scouting is a Skill Building Program @ Ethical leadership skills are built… @ In small steps… @ That nurture the development of the scout’s sense and understanding of his/her responsibility… @ For the choices made… @ And their effects on others. 11 Fostering a Safe Environment for Taking Risks @ We started this session working to build relationships; @ Did that allow you to feel more comfortable in this session??? @ Relationships are KEY @ Scouting should be a safe haven for youth, in which there is no fear of ridicule nor harassment. @ After awhile, the Scouts themselves will control the behavior and feel good about the difference. 12 Validating the Values of Scouting @ Creating opportunities for Reflection insures that these values hit the moral core of the scouts. @ Feedback opportunities for Reflection include: @ Scoutmaster Conference @ Board of Review @ Informal Chats after “teachable moments” @ Ceremonies Instill Character @ Called “Court of Honor” for a reason @ Rituals make the invisible visible. @ The Oath and Law are the public values of Scouting. 13 The Scouting Learning Model @ The Scouting Program = Experiential Learning @ Experience is the BEST Teacher @ @ @ Action Learning Learning by Doing Service Learning @ Experiential Learning provides opportunities to learn by the need to accomplish a given task @ @ Problem Solving Doing the Task @ @ Reflecting on the Task Applying learning to the next Task 14 Initiative Games http://www.scouting.org/filestore/pdf/Games.pdf @ Initiative games are purposeful activities with a specific goal(s) and learning process that are less competitive and less rule oriented @ These games can be very competitive, with lots of strategy and skill without having to have someone lose. @ Everyone has fun, and in that sense, wins. 15 Cooperative Activities Games @ Cooperative Skill Building Activities = Initiative Learning Game @ Skill Building: simple knots to pioneering monkey bridge @ Small steps that nurture boy's sense of responsibility for his choices and their effects on others. @ Power & Confidence @ Making sense out skill @ Reflecting on that experience 16 Let’s Practice Experiential Learning! 17 Questions for Reflection @ Open-ended questions avoid yes and no answers. @ What was the purpose of the game? @ What did you learn about yourself? @ How did it feel when you started to pull together? @ Judgment questions ask Scouts to make decisions about things. @ What was the best part? @ Was it a good idea? @ What could you have done to improve? 18
